I put 104000 km on an 2003 CL; rode it two up coast to coast in Canada and USA over 10 years. Its been a very reliable motorcycle as a bagger but is has quirks; top heavy at low speeds, a single disc dry clutch that needs to be ridden properly. During its life I extended its frame 6 '' to give better passenger leg room and it worked fine. Recent I modified it again, removing rear frame, panniers and top case for a modified C rear frame; LED taillights and turn signal. Its a one seater now; 200 lbs off the dry weight. Still in love with the bike; lots of torque, fun to ride and it goes like hell! I will enjoy this bike for many years to come.

Hi - Im very interested in details on fitting a C rear frame. Can you share details on the modifications needed to perform this operation? And maybe share a photo if possible? I really want to do this modification myself :-) Thanks a lot.

I have managed over 30K miles over the last 4 years rode through Spain over the Alps a few times and done some unpaved forest trails. Great for motorways etc never stop laughing when I ride it. Rode over the splugen pass also the stelvio which was frightening as it was on a previous r1150rs.....its not a bike for the inexperienced but could out brake anything on wheels, you need confidence and a lasses-faire attitude.....I tried to break the TT lap record on mine and was doing well till I was overtaken by a transit van doing over 100mph...…….

Stick to the MSF 250 starter bikes, and you should be fine.

THIS is the WORST handling motorcycle on the planet....very, very unstable and unwieldy in a parking lot or slow turning situation....I sold mine...the guy who bought it hated it and sold it to another guy....it handled so bad that he wrecked it on a slow turn and totaled the junker...never recommend this machine.

Love mine. Gain some knowledge and practice and it handles as well as any other full dress cruiser. When I first got it, I thought the same as you. I can now do U-turns in two parking spaces (18 ft). Just have to get to know it.
