Mr Aurel Bacs, the man who brought the gavel down on the world’s most expensive wristwatch in 2017, talks us through six of his favourite timepieces going under the hammer next week in NYC. On 5 December, he will return to Phillips auction house alongside MR PORTER and our friends at The Rake in New York to present Styled: Timeless Collectors’ Watches And How To Wear Them, a first-of-its-kind auction that unites the worlds of collectors’ watches and men’s style.
As you’d expect from one of the watch market's most influential tastemakers, his selection hit all the right notes in terms of desirability, uniqueness and investment potential; perhaps more pertinently, though, the watches he chose were wearable across a wide range of scenarios. Honestly from a snobby filmmaker's POV I think Mr Porter changed directors for their videos. They just aren't involving anymore. This video doesn't even show straight on shots of the watches or the watches on the wrist which is a big oversight, imo. The video consists merely of slider shots on the subject, a few pans across the watches and, inexplicably, the subject walking around town. Mr. Porter please rehire your old video production team.

They are promoting Aurel as a luxury auctioneer and are using the brands to increase his credibility. This is not about the watches, is about him. Tricky stuff. To give you some background, the LVMH group are pushing volumes on the market and are needing “Independent, credible auctioneers” to push the idea of the watch as an investment to the young generation. Sponsor of this is Biver, if you research this you will understand the connections.
