Nice welder. I am a beginner. I clicked on the video because I saw the FORNEY. I am using one at work, it's a different model, but looks identical to yours. The machine is solid and easy to use. I am considering buying the machine you have for my own personal use. Good review, thanks a bunch.👍👍

When they say to make sure the 0.30 on the roll is facing outside for 0.30 wire, they’re not talking about the roll of wire, though this machine feeds from the bottom, so the label will be out. They’re referring to the metal feed roller inside the drive. Normally the top roller. There should be two grooves in the roller. One will be 0.30, and the other could be either 0.23/24, or 0.35. The side you read from the outside, when the roller is installed, is the actual wire size in the groove being used. Use the minimum tension you can get away with. Make sure the wire isn’t bent! That’s really important. If it is, it can jam, and flux core is delicate, because it’s hollow with soft flux inside. It’s easy to crush the wire with too much tension. Just be very careful, when installing the tips after feeding the wire through, to NOT press that trigger! It will be live when you do. Just a word to the wise. Magnetic clamps can move the arc around, and your weld will wander. The arc will want to stretch towards the magnet. Try not to have the magnet too close to the area you’re welding, and remove the magnet as soon as you have made your tacks.

Great video. My mistake as a non-welder: 1. didn't take the copper things out so the wire can come out and screw them back in. 2. scrap the paint on your object before welding and clipping. 3. the feeder can adjust to faster 4. the black things can adjust and move out to help the wire to align to the blue tube. 5. I turn the power to 4 instead of 1 to melt better. the metal shouldn't be too thin. 6. didn't buy the wire in the first place. 7. borrow my friends' welding gloves which are way too big. remember to practice first before doing your project.

lee open up your drive rollers by flipping the hinged tentioning knob located directly above your rollers.this will alow you to take the wire .030 off the spool and feed the wire by hand into the blue tube. then hinge down the wire tetioning knob to close the roolers down on to the wire. you dont have to feed the wire the way you did at all it not the correct way to do that it worked lol by make it easyer the way i explained. hope this helped. ive been a certified welder for 41 years. nice addition to the shop.

Great video. I used and FC welder for years, but when a great deal came along on a shielded MIG welder I changed over. Still use the FC from time to time. No matter what type of welder your using. The basics always stay the same, clean work, good ground & watch your puddle. The things you have been doing for years and years. Don't let that little green box change what you know and start second guessing your self. Give it a couple of weeks and you will weld like you have used that welder for years.

LEE,,let me help you out bud, if I may, for FC fillets point the wire down more toward the bottom plate, it is a heat sink to the table, the top plate heats up faster, use 45-55 degree work angle from the bottom plate. Good choice of wire size [..030] burns hotter on a 110v FC welder, helps with heavier than sheet plates. For that plate there MAX your voltage. WS as high as you can go until wire starts to push the gun away then drop back WS until it welds good and hot. Your doing very well other than settings. Practice a bit👍👌

Some friendly advice my dad taught me with mig welding. You don't go back and forth like 6013 AC, you want to feed your pool in the direction you are welding in a nearly sideways pattern resembling a very short letter z. Then you'll be sitting pretty. You did a good job with self taught learning curve. You're a good welder.

I found with my forney flux core wire welder metal preparation dramatically improved my results. I’m working on spatter Guards or a coating or tape to speed up clean up. I have tested welds made with my forney like a bending till something brakes. It.s not the weld that brakes. Thanks for sharing

When i got my first wire welder, my friend the 22yr old welder told me the ground is key, he recommends having a nice clean ground area, and I have seen others who will clamp a nicely frayed copper wire between the clamp and work to make sure the ground is not breakable. The reason for assuring the ground , he told me, was it could create a lot of situations that a newly might consider to be wire speed and voltage problems. That leads me to cleaning the weld surfaces by grinding to clean metal is not necessary, but a very good practice if you are concerned about getting a really good weld.

Just picked up the same welder a few days ago. There are 2 line grooves where those 2 wheels pull the wire. You can flip one of those around depending on your 0.030 or 0.035 size wire. Just a heads up if you changed ur wire size since or having any trouble since. With these welders it's best to create your puddle on the bottom of the joint and move the puddle up as you go along.

Congratulations on the new welder Lee. I see you are getting lots of advise already. Practice, practice and try different techniques. I have very little experience with flux core, as I have a 250 amp LTec old school machine. Anyway, some of your welds look like you are going a little slow also a good practice when you sit down to weld something, take a piece of the same material and get your ark started with a steady move and with your other hand adjust the wire feed until the machine has a very clear and steady buzz to it, like a mad bee. After awhile you will commit to memory the settings for most of the material you weld. Also ground on the material or as close as you can get, not all the way across the table. Good luck and have fun my friend.

I kept waiting on you to figure out that the knob on top of the rollers allow them to separate making wire loading easier. You made it work and that is the important thing. Good luck. I started with a wire welder and then got a stick welder. Neither of them high quality. I find that I prefer stick welding but there are times when you can't beat a wire welder. Apropos of nothing, my stick welder is one of the chinese welders that is about $120 on amazon. Modern electronics make it much easier to use than the lincoln buzz box.

Mr Lee, I believe from your video that you were welding backward . Stick welding for a right handed, goes from left to right while pulling away. For mig welding it's to opposite, left to right while pushing forward.
@AlanBurnham
@AlanBurnham 4 жыл бұрын
I think that is true for mig but not for fcaw. Pushing with mig helps the pool stay shielded but with flux core, pushing increases the risk of contamination. That is my understanding anyway. Pushing mig certainly makes it easier to see...for me anyway.

When loading a new spool of wire always lift the top roller it is hinged for that purpose. If you have a gas hook up on it you will find it will weld much better than without. You will need argon gas for steel. Flux core is ok but was designed for welding outside in the wind. Gas welding is much cleaner and better for the beginner , and is easier. If it doesn't have gas hookup flux core is your only option.

This is a flux core only welder. It appeals to beginners because of it's low cost and simplicity. I think dealing with gas scares off some beginners. Also the fact that these welders run off 120 also attracts first timers that don't have 240 available.

I bought the Amico Mig 130A. I see the manual for it is actually the manual for the Forney 140i, complete with typos! Even the set up chart says 140i, and the Amico has the knobs reversed! I don't know what that means, if they just stole the manual or if the companies are related. Weird.

He is not loading wire correctly, need to open the wire feed assembly. The wire must be set on the roller inside the assembly, and the wheel has 2 slots for 2 different size wires. The .30 goes is the slot in the wheel it belongs in. I think the other slot on the wheel is for 3.5 wire so bigger slot. Watch the company video for correct set up.

Personal safety should always be practiced. I noticed you did not have leather gloves on to protect against burns. Though the video does not show you welding in a short sleeve shirt I’m assuming you did and this is also bad. The UV rays given off from welding can give sever sunburns on any exposed skin (I’ve gotten it on my neck before). I think regular leather work gloves would have been fine for the amount and type of welding you did (no need to buy the expensive welding gloves)Thanks for the videos, however. I do find them informative .
