I confess, I've played a character before inspired by Link from the legend of zelda series. Mainly it just started cause I wanted a sword and board fighter who could fight well with a bow and arrow without too much hassle, but my mind did keep going back to Link and thought his gadgets and horse was great too. The character looked absolutely nothing like him though, his name was Ruden Greydial and he had short dark brown hair with a beard wearing animal furs from hunts. That said he did use a sword and shield, longbow, had bombs, a chestnut brown horse, etc. He was some multiclass of fighter and ranger. Edit: When I first started typing this comment I remember the character being a lot more of a ripoff than he turned out... Guess that's the difference between inspiration and just copying an existing character like that player did.
@JPG.01
@JPG.01 9 күн бұрын
Considering that Legend of Zelda is an archetype of the adventure genre in general, calling your character a ripoff is way too harsh. You played a game about adventurers and made an adventurer. That's about it.

See, there's a difference between inspiration and direct copycatting. Inspiration tends to still evoke creative elements that a person might have in their preferences. Say, one could be playing Akida Tai, Sun Soul Monk of a distant monastery, instead of directly playing Goku. I mean, the entire classes of Ranger and Monk is basically tropes stuffed into rules, so it kinda comes with the territory of RPGs.

I pulled the snoring bit once in a scenario when my character had tripped a knockout gas trap. I gave the other players a bit between snores and tried to keep them low enough to be background. Got a laugh, especially since the character was generally silent in public.

Do not worry. Stories like these are only prevalent due to selection bias. They get told about. There are probably hundreds of thousands of campaigns running that nobody complains about. Including yours. It's just basically a heavily biased statistic messing with your perception of yourself and reality. Don't worry, just the fact that you worry about being a cringy or problem player is enough to tell me that you are not a problem player.

Regarding the one story about the annoyance who would give the new DM criticism every morning after the session, this is why there sometimes needs to be a mentality of 'pushback is necessary'. If you just endure what he did with no ramifications for his behavior or actions, it's only going to continue.

My DND campaigns are M-rated and are text-based for recordkeeping's sake. There is the inclusion of sexual intercourse, horrible acts, and drug usage. But the world is always formatted like the real world where there are consequences in some places and a lack of consequences in others. Most of the players are told this upfront and accept the conditions of play. Not Phil, as we will name them. They filled out the app to join, agreed to the terms, and were around 5 sessions in after their character had consumed copious amounts of mushrooms and performed gratuitous acts of violence before another player had a romantic interest and then had a physical night together with that interest. I remember the exact text Phil sent was, "You shouldn't do that so I'm going to stop you." They attempted to by initiating a PVP moment without warning and trying to kill both the player and their romantic interest. The problem is, he was messing with a bard and his damsel and the bard was much more skilled at both their class and DND. Not only did the bard win the fight without a scratch, he further insulted the unconscious warrior by tying him up and continuing to do his business. I thought that was the end after he untied the warrior but Phil couldn't handle defeat. He kept trying to kill the bard later either directly or indirectly, also targeting anyone he wanted to be with which was few and far between. The bard, having had enough of the nonsense after trying and failing to be diplomatic with Phil multiple times, eventually killed the warrior after the 13th attempt on the bard's life. Phil asked, which still makes me laugh to this day, "What? Why did you kill me?" The next Phil character, another warrior, did the same thing as the prior. A vote was held because of his break in RP and Phil was kicked out of the group unanimously. He asked why and I had to explain, in recordkeeper fashion, all of the things he did wrong again for over 3 months. It was infuriating because he tried to play the ignorance card, despite everyone else having access to the chat logs and timestamps. No one had stopped him from what he had done, not once and everyone was pissed that he tried to kill another player and an innocent because "sex was bad."

I once encountered someone playing a girl with a super tragic backstory (Dead parents, being chased down by criminals, etc) and was seriously OP for an 11-year-old. Yep, this character was ELEVEN. She wasn't particularly well-written. She was a puddle of tears and the player constantly put her in danger and made her hide behind others, despite her being on par with (and even more powerful than a few) the adults and capable of defending herself from most opps. But I found the character charming and joined a few games just because she was there. I liked being her meat shield and/or shoulder to cry on and, secretly, playing with someone like that made me feel better about my own characters xD

There are characters that only work within a particular party or with specific allies, but when they do, the storytelling potential goes through the roof. Interactions between party members are too often forgotten when it comes to storytelling in TRPGs.

There was a guy that hung around a local game store that wanted in on an ongoing game. DM didn't let him, probably because of the irrationally large swastika tattoo on his *neck*. I stopped going to that place shortly afterwards.

I mean, just because he has the tat doesn't mean he beleives that stuff. It's pretty normal for guys to get sucked into ideas like that, get a big windmill or hammer and sickle tat, then realise how silly it is and stop. Tattoo removal isn't going to work (you can still see the old tattoo) and getting it blacked out will look just as bad (and you'll know they had some kind of distasteful tat under there). Was he ever actually espousing the thing?

Proooobably my current party’s sorcerer. He’s a good dude away from the table, but he seems to be about as interested in RP as a vampire is interested in sunbathing. He’s derailed three or four sessions now at random intervals to go hunt a bounty when the rest of the party expressly asked for an RP heavy session instead of just monster of the week fighting. Finally got to the point this last week that I called him out and told him to knock it off.

Most of my bad LARP experiences were so unpleasant or boring that "cringe" would be an upgrade. But the most embarrassing player I saw was the girlfriend of one of the referees. She was focused on killing other player characters, and her boyfriend let her have special homebrew abilities designed let her get away with it. They almost worked. The other players kept catching her, dealing with her, and her referee boyfriend would keep bailing her character out, whether she was petrified, killed, or had her soul consumed. She would complain about how unfair it was that the other players kept going after her after she attacked them. After losing her character she once spent the rest of the night sulking in the middle of the in-character area. Plotting her revenge character. She later walked into the game as another character of hers in order to do a ritual to stop the ritual the other players were doing to track down her assassin character after her boyfriend had come in as her character and teleported her out.

Ok so on the no romance front. I just don't understand this at all. If as a DM you don't want to partake or deal with it, that's fine. Allowing PC to PC romance should still be a thing, and simply having g anything past holding hands the like goes to fade to black. I get a DM saying saying so to descriptive romance, I get a DM not wanting to flirt with half the table. But ruling it out completely is a little weird to me.

The DM at around 4:30 seems like they are terrible at communication. First game ever for the random guy, and he didn't bother to correct any problematic behavior. Second game, was just miscommunication and still on the DM as he should have notifications on for the channel. Yes the player was rude by insisting but its ultimately on both parties for lack of miscommunication. Then, gets upset when the guy and friends play the same way AFTER THE DM DID NOT CORRECT HIM THE FIRST TIME. 3rd game, DM says no nonsense but has not defined what that is to the new player. So really this DM just sucks as bad as the player since they explain nothing. Shouldn't be a DM

I admit I played a paladin that was inspired by Deku from MHA, took the Oath of Glory as the Peerless Athlete Channel Divinity was the closest thing we could get to One For All. My fellow players ended up loving him, because a lot of his story was about becoming his own man outside of his captain whom he'd lost in an investigation gone awry (he was a town guard and they stumbled upon a cult of necromancers), and he ended up becoming a great, selfless leader and powerful warrior in his own right! Unfortunately the campaign ended just as we were about to confront that cult back at his hometown, but my boy Euden remains to this day one of our favorite characters. If I could play him again, I would.

I think most people in the hobby have seen people who always play the same character in each game. Not a specific archetype or playstyle, but literally the same name and appearance, adjusted for the specific rules of the system. One guy however, managed to unlock a new level of cringe. He would use the same name in every game, and then, in the LARP he was running, wrote a plot in which it was revealed that there was one of these guys in every universe, and these characters were aware of each other, and were all linked through destiny, as the protectors of the multiverse. So if he ever played in your LARP, it was confirmed in his LARP that his character was the most important person in your entire setting.

Cringiest player I had, I have to wonder if they had some bad dms in the past or just read horror stories endlessly. They were absolutely convinced that I was a killer dm and tried to deter from every hook I set up for the party. I had some newbies that campaign so I wanted to give a good experience and not be too rough on them. But this player would question every detail I have, would waste time arguing to other players that they shouldn't do things because it might kill them or set off a trap. I had to uninvite them because their paranoia was upsetting my other players with the constant time waste.

Guy came back after about 2 monthes. Freaked out when we were trying to figured out how my character ability worked the week before after a DnD session. When DM finally pulled us both to the side after the next dnd session was cancelled which was for a birthday pizza party for our youngest player. DM was confused on why we both agreed. Which meant he changed his answer to mine. And also initmidated DM at start of session to not get involved and instead tried to cheat and steal from my character while also several times yelling at me. After hearing he had leverage over DM and he wanted me kicked out. I left. Adding me to a reported by DM list of several people that left solely due to his behavior.

I was in a group once with a pretty bad player experience, I usually DM for the group, it's not large it's made up of 3 people, so everyone had to make two characters well the player picked a monk dragonborn and a halfing bard both at level 1, the other player picks a fighter and a ranger, well the first encounter is goes fine, it's just a few bandits no bigey, we mop the floor with them, well the next encounter it's against like 8 wolves (I don't remember how many wolves there were exactly) well the players are surrounded and the player's characters go down, nothing wrong the other two characters are just fine, struggling but fine, the bard gets back up and casts healing word, well the wolves haven't moved, and attack knocking them down, and they do the same to the monk, and it keeps happening, at first the player jokes about how it's feels kinda targeted, now the other two are still standing, as far as I remember, but they are in the red, also the wolves are attacking the monk and bard while they're down, and eventually the player starts to raise their voice getting frustrated and annoyed, eventually he starts screaming and the two other characters go down, the other player is trying to defuse the situation but it's not working eventually the player rage quits and the dm wraps up the one-shot That player was me, one of my players wanted to dm, and I was excited, and I got really mad because it felt very targeted, and we still play together, and it didn't lead to any bad blood, but it's my most shameful player moment we were both new, and struggled with balance

And this is why one must rework mystic to limit their resources, because otherwise it is absolutely an overpowered mess. I mean you gain access to your strongest stuff from your disciplines at level 5! That’s like a wizard gaining a 9th level spell slot at level 5. So I tweaked the amount of psi points you can have, the amount you can spend in one round, the amount of disciplines you get, made the discipline access actually be limited by your subclass, and replaced many of the class abilities that gave extra psi points because who in their right mind needs 4 separate resource recovery skills.

10:25 maybe it's just the example being bad but that doesn't sound like excruciating detail. That's how one of my groups keeps our DM on his toes and he rewards us with either interesting flavor befitting the owner or occasional fun goodies we can use mechanically. Like we beat a flying castle of giants and we decided it was a race to loot the place before hopping out of the crumbling castle. We picked up everything that looked even slightly interesting, including some jars of mystery liquids. I remember one was enough greater healing potion to split between the party. Another was deemed something useless to us but valuable enough in the quantity we acquired to offload onto a happy merchant for the money.

I mentioned an DND game i was around for on another vid on broken homebrew. there was another problem player, a friend of the DM's brother. Presented in no particular order; Problem player played a wizard that shared his name. Problem player's first apperance had him doing shopping, and dragging the entire thing out for hours by insisting on individually counting the grains of gunpowder he was buying. He then ran into a few bandits, and he tried to intimidate them. rolls horribly, and gets the absolute shit kicked out of him, only averting death by two party members idly passing by. Problem player joins a discussion about the party's kill count in their backstories. Problem player claims his character has killed hundreds of sentient undead by himself. Problem player joined the campaign at something like level 5. Problem player was part of a secret underground criminal organization. Problem player claims he worked for all the branches of this organization at least once. Again, joined at level 5. Problem player is playing a homebrew race and wizard subclass that lets him turn into a dire wolf, use a gun, and speak in thieves cant. Problem player actively refused to share any details of his sheet or his homebrew. Make of that what you will. Problem player ran off into an undead infested woods while the party was camping and bumped into two cultists. failed to intimidate them, they punked him, and he chased them down and failed to intimidate them again. Lead the cultists back to the camp, then grabbed the party's current lookout, a player i'll call Gem, to help him chase down a crow that was flying away, leaving the entire party asleep with two cultists who had already punked him. The DM pulled his punches to get the party out of it without a death. Problem player actively fucked with the plot hook of Gem. Gem had a family member that was looking for her, and sending various messages. He constantly and aggressively intercepted all of them until the DM forced his hand by making a message be delievered via another player. Problem player spent over 30 minutes on a rooftop rambling nonsensicly in a slow, dry and boring as paint drying monotone about some psuedophilisophical take on the undead infested woods to Gem while the rest of the party fought a pitched fight in the very building he was sitting on the roof of. Party gets into a boss fight at the end of an arc. entire party has a plan to handle everything. Problem Player grabs gem and says "Hey, wanna just loot?" and then goes off to loot while the fight's still happening.

So, I have no idea what kind of video this will fit in or even if you think it'll be worth including in whatever video it fits in, but I love this story, so here goes: Improvised Weapon: Thrown Octopus A long time ago in a galaxy not so far away, back in high school, I played my first ever D&D campaign. It was me, playing an approved homebrew anthropomorphic fox in some kind of ninja-ish class from one of the 3.5e expanded source books, my then-girlfriend playing a druid, her friend that I really didn't care for playing a barbarian, and someone I barely knew playing a cleric. In our first session, we woke up in a strange stone structure. We found our way to several chambers - one north, one east, one south, and one west - and in each, was a pit. A lesser fire elemental crawled out of the fire pit, air from air, and so on. We got to a pool that has water in it, so we knew what was coming. I asked the druid to summon something in the pool to preemptively deal with the lurking water elemental we knew was in there. She summoned a great pacific octopus. You know, one of those big ones with the six--foot tentacle span? Immediately, there was a rush of frothing water, the pool churning as the elemental tussled with the octopus, and after a moment, the octopus was launched from the pool to land with a loud, wet squelching _splat_ at our feet. The elemental began to clamber out of the pool, and almost instinctively, I picked up the octopus. I asked the DM: "can I throw the octopus at the elemental?" The DM put his head in his hands for a long moment, then with a pained, exasperated sigh said "Roll an attack with disadvantage." Natural. Mother-effin' Twenty. Again, the DM let out a sigh of frustration as I grabbed the poor octopus by the tentacles and whirled it around like a bolas, then let it fly, and I beaned the water elemental right in the face, knocking it off the edge of the pool where it was climbing out, and dealing 1d6+2 'octopus damage'. It was hilarious, but in hindsight, I really feel for the poor octopus. Pulled out of the goddamn ether to immediately be thrust into battle with a water elemental, launched out, grabbed by a mysterious fox-man, whirled around and slung at the elemental at high speed. What a day the poor little guy must have had.

I had a player who in three different games only cared about murdering people and stealing their organs. D&D, his rouge got a bag of holding and he would just spend all rp time ether killing people or putting their organs in his bag of holding (we had to get a second bag of holding because he would refuse to put anything else besides organs in his). Call of cuthulu, anytime his character would see a corpse he would take the organs out of the body and keep them (His characters sanity was the first to go to zero, despite him saying it is what my character would do). Mutants and Masterminds, He made a hero named reaper who would kill villains and civilians and steal their organs (he put all of his skill points in fighting and damage, eventually getting teleportation powers because people would run away faster them him).

Got a guy who's a nuisance to the rest of the party, and just acts as a pure contraian? Tell the party they don't have to travel with him if their characters wouldn't be allies with him. That usually solves my problems with "that guy"s

The most cringe player I can think of is a high school friend of my brother named Dylan, that's his real name because I don't want to try to justify changing a name to protect a person that infuriates me in hindsight. First of all, this was back during the 3.5E era, Dylan's crime, Reality Warping Human Supremacy, and that is not some kind of joke or euphemism. Dylan always played a human, and would argue with you for half your planned game time if you told him that it was a game where human wasn't an option, not so bad you're thinking because you either know someone like that at your game table or have heard a few stories about that kind of person, if that's where it ended I would agree with you. It's when Dylan was trusted with the DM's chair that takes this into overdrive, Dylan would tell you could play any of the Race/Species/Lineage options (3.5 had quite a few, some more unbalanced than others) but if you chose anything other than Human the whole game was freaking hard mode for the player and character while if you chose Human it was basically like taking easy mode, and if anyone asked him to act as a stand-in for the game they were running while they took care of what they thought would be a quick errand, then it didn't matter how the game was going up that point, it was back to Human=easy Mode and Non-Human=Hard Mode until the actual DM got back and basically had to spend a minute or two course correcting before returning the game to the flow it was supposed to have. He was fine playing non-RPG games, but the moment he could play a game that allowed you to be anything other than yourself, he would always make some kind of Human as a player and get in the groove. And he wasn't an entirely bad player, she was pretty respectful of the game as just a player, even if he couldn't shake his habit of only playing as a Human, and didn't even play a supremacist most of the time, and the few times I can recall he did it was more of a joking parody sort of way. But every time everyone else brought up his little problem, he would seemingly acknowledge what everyone was saying but just go right back to his usual routine, even if you called him out for his human supremacy as a DM (complete with prior examples, and often in the very game he was running) he would always act surprised and say he was just running the game the way that felt most natural to him or how he thought you should run the game. There were even cases where he was co-DM, the backup guy helping out the main DM mostly, where he would totally back the primary DM's rulings but still try his Human supremacy nonsense with the other DM literally interjecting and shutting down the whole thing before it really went anywhere. Honestly, I don't know why they kept inviting him to games like that. Hopefully, Dylan has become a better player/DM and finally stopped with the whole Human Supremacy nonsense when he's in the big chair. If not, well, I pray his fellow players have found better means of mitigating his nonsense.

Ok tbh the story where the dude showed up to the guys house after everyone was asleep I'm suprised there was anymore story after that since I'd if booted the guy from the server and said I had enough at that point. That guy has way more patience then I do. Also that aroy about leaf the paladin would of never made it this fsr with me as a dm even as anivice dm I am able to identify when someone doesn't care about being there and wouldn't put up with tardiness or lack of interest. To give you an example one of the first times I died a game at my lgs I had a group of about 5 people but one my best freind playing a human samurai fgger clearly wasn't into it and I talked to him and was like hey so this totally seems like it isn't your thing and while I appreciate you supporting me as a freind you don't have to feel obligated to play just for me and he left and that was that. We still hung out and played magic for years after that with no issue

2:23 Er, OK. Someone explain me why the "problem player" was expected to care about another player's personal issues. Not wanting to get involved with someone else's private life, particularly when it goes into "traumatic experiences" territory, is not bullying.

To be fair, made the character as a joke. Showed him off, but NEVER used him. Even if I used him for daily sessions for twenty years straight, I *_STILL_* wouldn't be as cringe as the Murder Hobo family in this video, who essentially busted into the DM's house a la the Dwarves from the Hobbit.

I'm currently play a Bright Gallus Bard named Hugh "Mungus" Jaschiken who's an Insult Comic professionally known as "The Roast Chicken". He's not exactly a joke character. There are funny elements, sure, but he is kinda somber character outside of performances.

3:52 yeah, what an asshole. The only time I ever nitpick a dm is if they explicitly ask me to help them wherever possible because they want to improve more quickly with feedback and I still wait until they've given me the go-ahead to go full "teacher/classmate checking your work" style breakdown. But even then, I remind them I am in fact nitpicking in some spots, I still love their games they've been running, and I throw in compliments towards what I liked the most so they have an offramp from the negative stuff.
