This is the very deep end of Prog metal. :) individually these guys are each in the top 0.1% (or higher) on their respective instruments with the exception of James LaBrie (the singer) who kinda gets dumped on a lot but would be considered good in pretty much any other band. He’s also aged harder than any of the other members of the band and can’t sing as well as he used to. This is a bit of an odd song to start off with as it’s the finale of a 5 song suite that spans 5 albums detailing the former drummer’s struggle with alcoholism and his recovery from it. It has a lot of callbacks and themes from previous songs and it is a bit disjointed out of context of the rest of the 12-step Suite. These guys have some truly EPIC tracks along with their more standard fare, and you really can’t go wrong with anything they do. As far as live vs studio, I would say that the band is more impressive live but the singer is better in the studio where he’s in a more controlled environment. Sometimes good to listen to both live and studio versions of the songs just to confirm to yourself that what they are playing in the studio is actually physically possible.
@nathanberry48494 жыл бұрын
I think James LaBrie's voice is fine, especially when you listen to his solo and Ayreon work. I think in Dream Theater he's fixed on some particular image that doesn't actually exist and tailors his vocals to it, but when others work with him they let him explore his range and skill. His Theater Equation work is top notch, cause he's also acting on stage, something that was on his bucket list for a long time.
@calibadgerdude60824 жыл бұрын
Nathan Berry not saying he’s bad. My point was in comparison with the rest of the band’s abilities, he’s not as much of a virtuoso as the others. You do have a good point about the vocal stylistics, though. I haven’t listened to much of LaBrie outside of DT, but I suspect he’d be much stronger in a lower register these days. Unfortunately, most of Dream Theaters older tracks and many of their newer ones are still up in the Geddy Lee vocal range and style which is no longer LaBrie’s strong point. I always thought of him as a more vocally pleasing Geddy, but I think those days are behind him now. Even if their future music is more suited to the new vocal paradigm that he is able to offer, I fear that he’s no longer capable of properly performing the classics that the band has in their repertoire. It’s a shame, cause I’ve always liked his voice and it’s truly synonymous with the DT sound.

The other songs are: The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root Of All Evil, Repentance.

Just saw them live for maybe the 7th time last week. Live shows and recordings are definitely a great way to introduce someone to the band because people can appreciate and enjoy the musicianship on display before the music really clicks. This was actually a good introductory song suggestion (even if it's the last of a series of related songs, google "Twelve-step Suite"), since it's not overly progressive for a new listener. Gotta get your feet wet before taking the plunge deeper :) Have fun discovering them, because there's a shit ton of fantastic music to unpack. Welcome to Dream Theater; one of the most underrated and talented bands. Let's see if I can provide some info on this for you. 1. This song is the last part of the "12 step suite" that their original drummer (not the current one in the video) wrote about his battle with alcoholism. This song actually references the melodies from other songs in the suite. If you're interested in more DT I highly recommend checking out that suite 2. @5:21 & @7:38 & @8:40 & @11:23 & @14:03 & @17:58 I see you noticing those nasty fills. The current drummer (Mike Mangini) set 5 records for fastest drumming. If you want to see more, check out "Enigma Machine" from this same concert where he has a drum solo. You'll be blown away, I guarantee it. 3. @5:31 the keyboardist (Jordan Rudess) is using an ipad with a music program he helped create, MorphWiz, which is available on mobile devices. 4. @9:29 Jordan switches over to another of his favorite gadgets, the Continuum fingerboard. Dude loves technology. They call him the wizard...can you guess why? 5. @15:50 that's the face you make when the God named John Petrucci melts your face. He has many victims 6. @17:11 Bass solo? Ask and you shall receive: The Dance of Eternity from this same show at the Boston Opera House.

Hey man you probably already know this, but I dont see anyone commenting about it here. The Shattered Fortress is the culmination of 4 other songs that came before it. That was a continuum the keyboard player was playing. Nifty little thing, isn't it? This drummer is amazing. many fans consider him just a machine-like clone of their original drummer who he replaced though. Check out something older, pre-2011 with Mike Portnoy on drums. This song is the 5th song in a 5 song series about Portnoy's battle with alcoholism, btw, with many musical references to the four previous songs.

It's okay.. nobody is prepared for jordan Rudess's keyboard playing. With this song you've dropped in on what I believe is the last of a twelve part story journey, played out over the band's career going back as far as the first part (Metropolis Pt 1) back in 1992 (actually if you want to see more of John Myung's bass the it features more in Metropolis Pt 1 as part of a more innocent overall composition of this whole thing). To say it's something of a classical progressive opus is understating it. It's a helluva track of theirs to dive into but quite typical and I'm glad you got to them though! If you want an earlier movement of this opus which I know you'll go crazy over look for "The Glass Prison" - you'll hear the way they've constructed the whole body.
