Just started this book and your description makes perfect sense. I almost gave up after the first few pages until I watched this video and had a lightbulb moment. Thank you

I’m so glad to hear your thoughts on the importance of stream of consciousness narratives here and the purpose of a book being written in that way. I’ve traditionally shied away from a book if I know that’s the style, but like many others on BookTube I’ve started on my Booker Prize reading this week and picked up a copy of The Bee Sting first. there’s a whole section written in a very similar way with no full stops, commas or punctuation of any kind (there’s still capital letters to dictate where they should be though!) and I’m in AWE of the way that this affects pacing, communicates the mindset of the character and the way we experience the book as a result. I actually considered calling in sick today just so I didn’t have to work and lose my flow once I’d put the book down. masterful stuff! realise I’ve totally derailed the conversation here away from Mrs. S, so sorry! I just wanted to let you know that I totally get what you mean, and I’ll definitely be picking this one up as soon as I can tear myself away from Booker lovin’ 😂💖

You’ve perfectly articulated what can be do good about this style of writing, when done well and with a purpose it totally changes the way you read a book. Love it 🥰

You sold me! I put it on hold at the library. I am not sure there are any rainy days in my near future, but I plan to settle in and read it anyway.

I've seen this book reviewed a few times and was mildly intrigued, but you have pushed me into full on "have to read now!" territory. Your enthusiasm was contagious! 💕

I JUST read this and came back to rewatch what you said about it. Then... I saw my comment below about HOW I should have read it. Ooops! I did read most of it in one sitting.

Superb review of Mrs. S. Makes me want to read it. You also capture the spirit of "butchness" so accurately.

I can't wait to read this. I asked my library to buy it and they have, just waiting for it to arrive. It sounds like my kind of thing. Also, the benefit of characters not being named is that you don't have to remember who everyone is (something I often struggle with 🙈)

I saw a lot of hype before I read this but I was disappointed with the book. However I wish I had seen this video first because you give such a convincing look at what this book is, I’m sure I would have been more invested in it. Wholly agree it’s a book to read in one or two sittings. I may even reread it now, Great video, new subscriber 👍🏻

I can definitely see why people might not like this book, I think in some ways it’s not necessarily very accessible as lots of people have said they only appreciated it after I spoke about it. I think my preference is always for books that can allow people to get invested and appreciate it, but maybe get deeper into it and get more out of it from a discussion with other readers (if that makes sense?)

I loved everything about this book including the lack of speech marks. For me, as you get to know the characters it's usually obvious who is speaking. Once in a while I had to go back and find the beginning to be sure. Once you know who spoke first, it was just short sentences back and forth until she adds a statement that is not dialogue. I want to know if non-lesbians find it as lusty and titillating as we do.
