SB19's MAPA is a play on words. "Mapa" is "map" in English but the song "MAPA" also talks about "Ma" & "Pa" (Mom & Dad), hence the title "MaPa". Graduation in the Philippines is also a perfect time to express appreciation to parents or guardians for sending them to school and taking care of them until they can stand on their own (graduating). This theme of giving back is evident in the song "MAPA" with the line, "...pahinga muna, ako na'ng bahala" ("...rest for now, let me do it"'). It implies that as we become adults, we will take care of our aging parents, just as they supported and cared for us back when we're kids.

Bro.. I've recently just discovered collective singing in school events and occasions/gatherings aren't a worldwide thing apparently. Idk why and how this is normalized in Philippines, as someone who's out of tune, this puts my mind at peace. It's alright if you can't sing (note to self). We also sang MAPA in our graduation 🥹 It's like an anthem

SB19's MAPA song sung here by the graduates tells of the very culture here in the Philippines where it is ingrained in the youth the vow that when they graduate and are stable enough, they would take care of their parents' as much as the latter had supported them reach their life goals especially to at least finish college. "Ma' stands for Mother and 'Pa' for Father, thus the title MAPA; the gist of the song is a grateful son/daughter's message to the parents saying, "Mom,Dad, you may relax, let me now be in charge of everything, It's my turn to give back the sacrifices you gave me to have me come this far.' MAPA is a song of HOMAGE TO PARENTS FROM A GRATEFUL CHILD.

Did you know that as a Filipino, I only recently discovered that this isn't a thing everywhere else other than here in the Philippines? We literally do this every graduation. We all have our graduation song. From elementary, highschool and college graduation. We normally will have a practice a week before graduation and the teachers will facilitate or any student body will lead the practice.

Hahaha.. 😂 The first time I got this reaction from Herrera's siblings, I was shocked because I thought singing in graduation ceremonies was normal all around the world. Like, from my entire life, this is all I know. We sang songs for our graduation ceremonies. Usually some songs may also be included depending on the institution. Generally, you can expect around three to five formal singing segments during the ceremony. Prayer Song: Sometimes it was performed by the students or the grad celebrants, or just a song lyrics from the big screen. Sometimes it was just a formal prayer, not a song. National Anthem-usually performed at the beginning after prayer. Provincial/or City Hymn-sung at the start. Farewell Song-often a graduation theme. In the middle/end of the program University Hymn after the Graduation Theme song. And additional if they will add a tribute for their parent's song. And maybe an icebreaker from boredom of the program, a sample from a popular student singer from their school. 😅 But the flow of the program depends on the universities's plans.

So..in the Philippines the mentality of most students, parents and educators is that having an education is a privilege. Teaching, is an important job. That's why at every graduation, the teachers and students work together to create a performance whether big or small to thank the parents, member of the family, friends or anyone who supported any student to reach their goal of graduating. As you can see as simple as singing is greatly appreciated by soo many. Most of these schools have no funding from the government however, the community make the effort to support the teachers and students to be successful. I'm glad you too the time to appreciate such videos to see the ture hearts of filipinos

We also usually would dedicate it to our parents in the audience and our teachers for their support. It also makes our graduation rite more meaningful to all of us. We would be holding our diplomas. If our attire then that means these are high-school students. College or Graduate school students would be wearing black.
