What consitutes a divot ? Is a bare lie a divot ? Just another way for people to cheat. Play it as it lies and get on with it, we don't need to slow the game down and increase cheating. What if I hit a poor shot, a nasty thin with an iron and it end in a divot on the fairway, do I need to play it as it wasn't a good shot ? Who decides what is a good shot ? It is what it is, hit the ball and move on. Its not possible to make a fair rule from this situation.

With the flat face of the putter grip, you should try it canted 45degrees to where the flat part is where it would lie in the fingers of your right hand. Would be interesting to see those results.
@handsomedevil4684 жыл бұрын
I think the reason you hit to the right of center with the putter grip is because you placed the flat part of the putter grip at the 12 O' clock position which would promote a weaker grip & right of center results. You should have aligned the flat portion of the grip with your normal grip top hand thumb position, say 1 or 2 O' clock. I think if you would have indexed properly your results have been better. Just a thought.

Two rule changes; stroke and distance for out of bounds. To speed the game up, just drop from where the ball went out, take a penalty stroke and hit. A ball landing in a divot on the fairway should be ground under repair with a free lift no closer to the hole. I replaced all my grips this year to Golf Pride CP2 oversize and have been very happy with the results.
@michaelj1703 жыл бұрын
There is a course south of Minneapolis where there is so many water hazards so you get to use the lateral water hazard rules. If you hit a ball that far off line, on most courses , it would be out of bounds. Back to the tee box and hit another. At Willengers, you save a lot of time and speed up the game making it more fun.
@juanmcain3 жыл бұрын
That rule has been changed, if you go OB you may take a drop in the fairway where it went out and take a two stroke penalty.
@chumb013 жыл бұрын
Juanmccain is sort of correct. The rule has not changed but they have a local rule (E-5) that would need to declared in play. IMHO, though, it is too complex. Ideally it would be played like a penalty area (e.g. determine entry point, 2 club lengths). Instead you determine entry point, determine closest fairway, then take two club lengths).
@DeiSchwarzfalke2 жыл бұрын
@@chumb01 E-5 causes more problems than it solves. Here in N. Nevada we recommend that clubs not use it. It also affects handicapping for the round(lowering strokes received)

Hey from a data perspective, Have a thought... with only 10 shots in each group you might want to take your best and worst shots out of each group. I bet the circles change a bunch. Cool video. When I was first starting out I basically had a death grip on my driver. Fitter set me up with a larger grip to take out the tension in my hands. This helped teach me to loosen up my grip to get the club face to close but my miss was always a fade/slice. After I learned what I needed to know about grip pressure (took forever for me to change) I dropped back to standard and with less tension the club face would release correctly. This whole experience helped me learn about grips tension and how to control the face through impact. Now I rarely slice and I’m turning the ball over for a nice draw when the tee shot requires it. Great video man, cheers!

Hey Mr. Short Game; Enjoyed your video regarding the grip size! You requested suggestions for the rules of golf. Since one of the reasons many people don’t play golf is that it take to much time! Here are my solutions to this problem. A. Instructions should be very limited on the course and participants should be encouraged to use the driving range! (A small bucket of balls could be offered for first time players!) B. All players shall not touch their ball once it’s been teed up through the green. C. The pin is left in at all times. D The player closest to the pin putts out first! E. The player who is the next closest putts out and so on until all players have finished putting. F Reading the green should be limited to 30 seconds! G. Players should tee off when ready, ‘honors’ are irrelevant. H. Looking for lost balls should be kept to a maximum of 3 minutes. (If you can’t afford a few golf balls and tees, you can’t afford to play!) I. All players are required to replace divots and repair ball marks on the greens immediately! These simply changes, once implemented, that will reduce the time spend on the golf course and will be more enjoyable for all. Thanks, Don Shumsky - A 60+ year golfer, still playing! dshumsky@msn.com

Switched to Jumbomax STR8 XL a year ago. Everything is better. I have XXL hands and have always had an issue with griping the club too tightly - felt that the club would fly out of my hands. The STR8 was an eye opener. I did their challenge, buy a set, install one and play. Wound up playing most of the round with my 7 iron. Fewer strokes when they are all in the fairway and solidly struck. Got home and changed the grips on the rest of my clubs. My wedges immediately became dart throwing scoring machines. You mentioned rotating your wrists - I am really not conscious of that with my swing, I only want the feel of the back of my left hand pointing at the target through impact. These grips helped that a lot, I suspect because I no longer have the death grip on my sticks. Stupid Rule - any penalty requiring distance AND a stroke. Except for the Professionals. Reason: A) This really slows down play for everyone behind you and B) you are already screwed enough. Stroke penalty, drop and play.

I've just changed my iron grips to a smaller size. I have always been a "hands" player, and felt that the grips I was using were inhibiting my hand movements. I found I was pushing shots, and when I tried to use my hands through the ball to square the club, I'd either smother the shot, or duck hook it, or both. With the smaller grips, I'm getting a lot cleaner strike, and regained a bit of lost distance. So I'm happy.

Took up golf at 73 years old and after 4 decades in construction/roofing in top physical shape and using banner, nail gun, snips, swas etc the first thing I noticed was the round shape of golf club grip was different from 90% of tool grips. So I changed the grip on my driver and shaped it to match the grip on my framing hammer. Immediate good results, seldom slice and easier "feel" of the club head and ball. Then I am told this is not allowed in tournament play! Well, nearing 74 and starting to outplay my 75 to 85 year old mates and never going to play tournament golf I am keeping my "illegal" grips and spend far less time in the woods hunting for my ball . Good tools handles are ergonomically designed to fit the hand, assist in keeping hammer head, drill etc square to whatever is being struck, drilled, screwed. Ever part of a golf club has over the decades, being designed, engineered to provide max performance. That is with the exception of the golf club grips which for some odd reason (tradition perhaps?) the round, skinny grip remains sacrosanct? Good video 👍👍 🖖

TL;DR - You can watch TXG for a more in depth explanation, but essentially smaller grip you'll close the face more and the larger the grip the more the face will remain open. You can't use the flat grip because it is a swing assist tool on any club that isn't the putter.
@Garbox804 жыл бұрын
I thought it must be something like that. Had he had the flat spot one or two degrees to the right, he would have been hitting it straight in the middle of the fairway (probably with a baby draw). It would be easier to grip the club exactly the same every time if there was a flat spot. Now if it was allowed, it'd be the same opportunity for everyone, so it wouldn't bother me though.

If you want to make it harder on yourself by using your putter off the tee, nobody cares, but when you’re adding an unfair advantage then it’s not legal. Question: Most golfers tend to hit their drives to the right. I know it is true for me since I hit a 48” driver shaft. While this certainly results in some longer drives, it’s not easy to get the club face closed. To make up for the extra driver length, I play the ball more forward in my stance so the club face has a longer time frame to close. This also means I have a taller ball position. All of these changes mean I have to be spot on with my swing to stay in the fairway and not searching the woods for my ball. I was wondering if I switched to the putter grip but set the flat side to the right if that wouldn’t help get the face closed sooner. What do you think?
@johncarilli22274 жыл бұрын
Your STANDARD grip proved more consistent, possibly due to feeling “normal” as opposed to using a different thickness and causing a different and odd grip feel. Remember though the weight shift (increased gram weight) on the larger grips reduces the driver SWING WEIGHT. This accounts for it “feeling” lighter because of the counter balance in reduction of head weight, it may for average golfers reduce distance mostly due to the lower swing weight and club head speed, but in doing so for average players after they get used to the change may find more control. The test revealed thicker grips reduced the ability for “loose” wrists and therefore balls going more right. The test was very good but it may prove that as Bryson is reaching for new horizons, once you get used to the differences in feel, a thicker grip it may help certain players but I suspect not all... just remember fatter grips both reduce the freedom of wrist turn and reduced swing weight ... but if the gram weight can match the weight of your standard grip gram weight AND you adjust to the grip thickness ... you may be up to something that SOME GOLFERS ... not all ... may find beneficial ... BRYSON and TIME may reveal its effect! One thing you can bet ... look out ... R&A & USGA will not like what just happened in the Open. Bryson says he is going to try next a 48” driver !!!
@Garbox804 жыл бұрын
But really the Super Stroke was just as consistent as the fat one minus on bad shot that made the dispersion ring that big. And his standard grip was also all over the place when compared to the bigger ones, so with a little fine tuning that fat grip would probably be the best for him (out of the legal ones).

I think it's ridiculous that the talking heads and old time golfers in the media, are talking about how golf courses are being overpowered. The fact that only one player at the US Open managed to stay under par tells me that skill and finesse are still extremely important. I'm a mid handicapper. I love seeing the elite golfers do things I will never achieve. It's why I watch any elite level athlete. So, why do the old farts want to reign them in? They're not using performance enhancing drugs, they're just playing better, after working really hard at it. Bryson's win should finally shut the mouths of those media types who mocked him on live TV for his physical and clearly mental gains. It's like when the Fosbury flop was used for the first time in high jump. Everyone scoffed at first, until the competition got consistently destroyed.

I use the jumbomax grip on my driver...they have an ultralight model that does not change the swing weight and that is what I use. Also, I wear a medium large glove and was told by the guys at jumbomax to try the small, which is plenty big for my hands. So, hand size will definitely affect the overall performance of the large grips also; you need to figure out what works best for you. BTW, I love being able to hit my driver as hard as I can and not fear going left and I'm hitting at least 10 yards longer on average.

Nothng ruins my round more than misses to the left. Looks like their are too many white dots left. I found similar results when I put jumbo grips on my irons It got rid of left side misses albeit I started getting a few squirrley right side misses. But the jumbo grips overall were better. I can usually recover from a right side miss (depends on hole) much better than left misses. I've had too many left misses lately with driver so I'm going to increase grip size to mitigate left missses. Great video and similar results that I've seen from other videos on this topic.

Grip size and weight has no REAL impact on swingweight. Yes, you will get a different reading on the swingweight scale with a heavier or lighter grip but you are only 'tricking' the swingweight scale. The swingweight scale was developed with a standard 50 grams as the grip weight and to give a measurable value to how heavy the clubhead feels in the club set-up. Whilst a heavier or lighter grip effects the static weight of a club it doesn't effect head feel because you hinge the club from your hands.

Anyone else remember the "gripless" driver shafts.?.? The too-thin = everything right finding goes against most that I have heard about club fitting where the too-big for you grip will prevent hand rotation and exaggerate the slice. There are ton of grip manufacturers that are doing a less tapered grip for the 'swinging clubs" and have even seen "reverse tapered" grips from Enlow Golf at a trade show which surprisingly felt good and super intriguing, but not enough to commit to the entire set. i have tried re-gripping my putter a few times this way (flat side facing target). It was ok, albeit odd (though I liked the "2 Thumbs grip" more this way), for my left-hand low set-up. Mentally, helped with preventing wrist break and keeping putterhead on line.
@thefirstfastrunner2 жыл бұрын
A larger grip actually fixed my driver slice. For the longest time I couldn’t figure out why my driver face would not close or square up at impact. I was using the drivers std size grip with tapered profile. Once I switched to Golf Pride mcc +4 With an additional tape wrap it corrected the slice. 2 theories for me: 1) either I was gripping way too hard because my grip was too small so i couldn’t release or 2) on my downswing my driver would twist and slip in my hands.
@zerodamonsta9422 жыл бұрын
My theory is it’s all in the down swing because the number on reason most people slice is cause the leave the club face open and I can bet that having a bigger grip will help you by making it easier to close the face on the down swing acting like a leaver but with it being bigger and your hand open more it makes the club roll over in your hand easier that’s my theory

Put a JumboMax Ultra Light Medium on my driver two weeks ago. I do the Moe Norman swing. I’ve noticed a great improvement in fairways hit and as I’ve gotten more comfortable distance has improved which I think is from greater confidence. Worth a try if you can change your own grips. Less than $25 experiment.
@tdevdad Жыл бұрын
I too am a Moe swinger. I put the JumboMax on my driver a few weeks ago. I feel less tension in my grip, which makes the club seem to swing faster. However, I'm not as consistently straight unless I slow the downswing. I have some of the DriTac LT (less taper) grips. Might try that and compare to the JumboMax.

I'm 51, my handicap dropped from 9 to 5 this season - coinciding with lots of Covid practice, switching to larger Medium Plus 4 Align Grips & a 10-Finger grip - and no question, a bigger grip has a tighter dispersion pattern - and Bryson won the US Open last night. I actually took my old Titleist AP2s with Standard grips to the range yesterday to hit them back to back against my larger grip clubs and the difference was obvious - I'm now waiting for a Jumbo +4 Align grip to be introduced - are you reading this Golf Pride?
@swisstrader4 жыл бұрын
Paul O'Neil interesting. Is it just better dispersion for you or also more distance? How did you decide which size to get?
@wallstreetoneil4 жыл бұрын
@@swisstrader It was a long and winding path that started 24 months ago with me returning to golf after 18 years away, buying a set of old man lighter graphite regular shafts to help my injured elbows absorb vibrations which I ordered with Standard Sized Align +4 Grips (my old clubs were cavity blades with 130gram X shafts and the Tour Velvet grips). As I slowly discovered that my old injuries, now more heeled, would allow me to start to swinging harder, I went down the Interent Rabbit Hole, found Mark Crossfield who was experimenting with a 10-Finger Grip for more power and then found the TXG Guys, in Toronto, who I live 3 miles from. In there for a gapping session to get my new strong lofted CAllaway CF-16s weakend and bent upright to counter the bigtime droop in the Regular Recoil shafts - and started swinging even faster. More internet learning, built a swing which now had more modern shut face, somehow watched something and thought I would try a Midsized Grip as even though I'm 5,9", I wear a mid/large glove and thought I would try it. Again there was the Mark Crossfield 10-finger thing, plus all my modern understanding that clubface at 1st parallel should be square to the back and not toe up - a BANG - huge lightbulb moment with me then, 49 years old, and I 10-finger an Align Midsized +4 grip, with control over the face, and I'm killing the ball in a repeatable non timing of the hands fashion over and over - I was hooked. As background, I'm a former tournament level tennis player who grew up ripping topspin forehands with a big tennis grip doing everything with my Right Hand - and for me the magic about a Midsized and Specifically a Midsized Plus 4 is that the bottom of the grip is SUBSTANTIALLY bigger - and thus your Right Hand, when you 10-finger it, can now be in FULL control of the clubhead - it's amazing. On the range over the last 4 months, I have converted at least 20 people to a 10-finger grip and using the Align Midsized +4 after they try my clubs - they are simply shocked how much more comfortable it is and with usually less than 20 swings of me helping them to think about controlling the clubface with the Right Hand only, that the left hand is completely irrelevant in golf, everyone will then be hitting it much more consistent. It sort of a combo of a Bryson bigger grip thing and a Matt Wolff thing (his swing is basically a looping topspin forehand thing. My female partner is 5'6" and wears a sized 8 glove and I also re-gripped all her clubs with the same Midsized +4 grips and she loves them also. I now look at Standard sized tapered grips as insane - basically built for very small children. Yesterday on the range hitting my old AP2 with the grips just 1000% re-inforced that I was correct to change and honestly Bryson is absolutely on to something - why make golf harder by using a small grip that is so sensitive to tiny differences in rotation that changes the face so dramatically? Honestly, it's insane if you think about it. Small women play tennis with MUCH larger grips than a standard sized golf grip - and trust me, tournament-level girls and ladies swing way harder with their tennis racket than I see 90% of bigger guys swing a golf club. I'm personally not that sensitive to swing weights so I don't care in the slightest that technically the club's swing weight decreases with a heavier grip ironically with the club's overall weight increasing. Finally, if you are someone who simply can't square the clubface and leave it wide open and have a big slice, I personally could fix this on the range in 15 minutes showing you how to keep the face square to your back, but the bigger grip is a bigger gear on the end of the golf club machine and it will absolutely for the same amount of hand movement reduce the face rotation - which I view as only positive (see Bryson's victory) but it may make your 7 yard fade into a 10 yard face - which after some practice you can make back into a 7 yard fade and it will be easier to replicate going forward. Order 2 midsized +4 Align grips and put them on your 7 iron and driver and hit the range for 2 hours and give it a go - and try a 10-finger grip while you're at it.
