I like to play where almost all of my shots a full shots, hence I keep a 60, 56, GP, PW in my bag. I have taken out the 4 & 5 iron. Because I'm 76 I depend on getting up and down around the green more than a much longer golfer would. This approach has kept me at an eleven Hcp.

The cool part of the game is that it isn't one size fits all, everyone has their own preferences and needs and strategies to get it done. 11 hcp is pretty good man, my goal for this season is to get my 15 hcp to about a 10... which I'm pretty sure is going to happen because I'm taking putting more seriously. Cheers.

This is the best youtube channel to learn about golf or have your questions answered. I just bought a 52, 56, and 60 degree wedge and I never use the 60. I got on youtube to confirm I wasn't crazy and now I'm switching to a 54 and 58, or a 52 and 58.
@Tognar3 жыл бұрын
Back in the day, the prevailing wisdom was to use a 56º and learn to use it a variety of ways... this is what I'm still doing. And while my short game is trash, it's nice to just know it was all me that screwed up versus second guessing if I played the right wedge around the green. That's my logic anyway.
@williammartella76163 жыл бұрын
I still pretty much do this. I had a 60 for a while, but didn't like it. Will have 54, 58 this summer, and swap out driving iron and 5 wood as needed.
@jimmydelrio86623 жыл бұрын
By having this mentally, I have become very good with my 56 wedge. I usually chip in once a round. By practicing with one wedge and having less option you get the feel of it instead of having options.
@jonq87142 жыл бұрын
I think I backed into this "wisdom" because I carry my clubs, I tried to evaluate what I needed vs what was a luxury and tried to keep it simple. I am however considering getting a super wide sole 60 (maybe I'll try a clone Inazone first) or a 64 degree from Pinemeadow to see if I can make use of it (I'm at 9 clubs right now plus a putter so I have room in my bag).
@touristguy872 жыл бұрын
...generally that's probably true but for some shots you just don't want to bring the bounce to the party and it's just too much of a distraction trying to split hairs between the blade and the bounce. A 60 really makes short shots a lot easier and gets me out of bunkers while keeping me on the green much more reliably than a PW.
@IIISWILIII Жыл бұрын
I've been playing around with keeping the same short chip swing around the green and just using my whole bag of irons depending on the distance to the pin. The results have been shocking once I knew the distances of each club on my little chip swing. Like you, I was a 90% SW chipper from anywhere close.

I have a 60 and a 64. Love them both. Partial wedges and chips around super fast greens where I need the ball to stop fast. I can't do it with the less lofted wedges. Also for full shots my 56 goes 80 yards, my 60 goes 60 yards and my 64 goes 40 yards. Plus special shots like in the bunker where you are close to the wall and need to get the ball up fast the 64 is incredible.

Ughhhh!!! I finally broke down and put a 60 in my bag and now I'm searching for videos on the appropriate time to use it and this is the 1st video I watch. FYI, This would be club #12 in my bag so I still got room. 60, 56, PW, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 23 degree hybrid, 3 wood, driver and putter. I am intentionally trying to stay under 14. I was going with 9 clubs for a bit and slowly that number is rising but still "slowly" so I can take note of what I actually "need" on the course. Right now I feel I have enough distance and shot style to fill the gaps in distances so I'm focusing on giving myself another option around the green.

I live in Southern California now for the last 4 years. When I started to replace my equipment in 2017, I decided I would add a 46° Vokey SM6 to be my PW, as I was replacing my older 50°, 54°, and 58° Vokey Wedges. Along with the 46° and 50° SM6s, I chose a 54° V Grind with 10° Bounce and a "low bounce" (06°) 58° K Grind. I will use the 58° up to 80-85 yards. I prefer the 58° for tighter grass lies and firmer Bunkers. I will use the 54° for "teed up" lies, deeper rough, and softer Bunkers. For Around the Green I vary club choice based on Lie, Distance to Landing Spot, and Amount of Distance from Landing Spot to Hole, so sometimes 6 Iron through 58°, which is 8 Clubs.

Due to a shoulder injury I'm not particularly long off the tee. I have a 72 degree wedge that, regardless of how hard you hit it, maxes out at about 45 yards. I really enjoy it to attack pins on the short side of the bunker.

Try a 90 degree … it goes straight up ! Max distance with full swing = 5 yards.
@danielcohen31593 жыл бұрын
First of all: that is a sick backing track, Matt. Love it. I'm a 52º and 56º guy and always have been. But I also like to get the ball on the ground and run it. But 40-80 yards pitches, the 52º is a real all-rounder for me. 10º of bounce so you can play it square, open it up, good for most conditions. And I tend to chip with lower-lofted clubs: 9-iron, PW, and Approach wedge, which is 48º, I think. Arccos tells me up and down % for the short clubs are: 8 iron = 33% 9 iron = 46% PW = 53% AW = 45% 52º = 29% 56º = 30% So it looks like I don't chip with 52 or 56 very often, and when I do...it doesn't go well. So I need to practice there, apparently. I see so many players now automatically grab their 60º wedge when they miss a green - no matter how close or far back they are, and no matter what the lie is. And then they try to flop everything right at the pin. Even if they're on the fringe. Sure, if you have to go over something and land it soft, open it up and hit it higher. But there's a big difference between a lofted chip and a flop shot. A flop shot should really only be a last resort. It means something has gone very badly wrong. Hardly anybody putts from off the green or uses a 9-iron. I'm not sure why. But a large skill set is more or less disappearing from American golf.

I use a 55 SW and a 60 LW, I only use the 60 on greenside rough and bunkers. The 55 I use almost everywhere- deck, rough, sand, tight, hardpan, soft, full shot, partial, chip. I think the SW loft and wider sole on mine has allowed for more versatility, and I think it really is easier for more players to manage. You can miss hit the SW a little and sometimes still get an ok result compared to miss hitting a 60. For me there was never a need to use the LW in similar situations vs the SW. BUT where the 60's specialty comes in around the greens from those troubled lies it's a spectacular performing club, and I had some incredible sand shots and even a hole-out or two from the rough with the 60. If you can handle it, bag the 60 but don't get cute with it. Know your game, your capabilities and limitations on what kind of shots you can play.

I've fought this battle for yrs. My solution. Weaken your PW to 47.5-degrees (Tiger uses 49 degrees). Strengthen your 54 to 52.5. The KEY is to have a 54/55/56 multi-grind (heel&toe relief wedge) strengthened (this allows you to open it for bunker & chipping). Then you want a similar grind 56 mid bounce wedge, that you bend to 58 or a 58 wedge (again mid bounce multi-grind heel&toe relief wedge - also can use in bunker). Your 3-wedge system is now 47.5, 52.5, 58 (thus 5,5.5 degree spacing) - then Add 21 or 16-degree Hybrid

I carry my clubs most of the time, I think I'll keep my 56 and be done with it (my set is Dr/3H/5i, 7i-GW and and a 56). That's 9 clubs. Once I get really good with those, maybe I'll start adding clubs back in, but I think this is how I'm going to start my season and see what happens. Gapping isn't a huge issue for me given the courses I play, I find more than enough overlap with my longer clubs to get to a point where I have my pick of which scoring club I want to use a full swing on, this is why I started taking clubs out and realized I could play just the same, if not better with fewer clubs.

I use a 56 with 10 degree bounce. Can run it a bit if need to, open for more lofted shots, and play bunker shots, too. One wedge keeps me from going back and forth about which wedge to use. Just choose my shot, and play it. Simplifies practice sessions, also. That's the key, really. Take your wedge and practice all these shots.

A good winter setup might be to drop the 60 and just use a 56 in place of the 54 and 60. I haven't done it in YEARS now, but in the past, going to a simple gap then "sand wedge" for EVERYTHING can be beneficial.

56 large bounce and a 60 low bounce. Depending on conditions, both have their place for me. Hard wet bunkers calls for the the 60, so does clean tight fairways 40-60 yrds out. The 56 gets me out of soft fluffy sand, thicker rough around the green and 60- 110 yrds from pretty much anywhere.

You have to keep in mind that there's never an easy answer and one person's answers are rarely right for others. For me, I play in the SW where the ground is often really hard; my high-bounce sand wedge often isn't the best club, where my low-bounce 60 works well. I carry 5 wedges, PW, GW, 52, 56, 60. and am thinking or lower in the number to 4 to go PW, GW, 54, 58. For me, that might be a good compromise of (kind of) combining the two most lofted clubs.

I’d love to manage my wedges better, but the 60 just seems to do it all. Enormous gap inbetween my PW and 60, however, so I probably need either a 50 or a 52 that I play with full swings like the rest of my clubs.

Yes, get rid of the 60. And get a 58! :) I have a sm7 58D that I like a lot more than my sm7 54S, which feels thin unless I put my hands way ahead. Looks like you have a sm8 54D which was not available in sm7. I can hit full shots with the 58D where 60 degree full shots always seemed high risk. Might eventually get a sm8 54D then a 60L for flop shots around the green when short sided with enough grass under the ball to get under it, but not too much to stall it out.

Food for thought, though I went the other direction. 52 and 60. My partial wedge distances meet nicely, and I use my 60 for short chips , out of bunkers, and toe chips out of short sided rough. Bonus is greenside my decision making is simplified. High or spin, low or roll.
@RonMcKenzie-bw7iq Жыл бұрын
You need both. Playing over a bunker with no green to work with and you are 20 to 30 yards from pin you need to get it up quickly so it can land hopefully within 12 to 15 feet from pin. Ok if we are all pros and get lots of back spin but many golf courses do not always have receptive greens and the ball can fly off narrow greens easily and perhaps into a bunker opposite from where you are playing the shot. Am I right? I am 74 and play off 17 - played since age 8. And the reason why I have a competitive handicap is because I have a very good short game. So yes I think you need both. Use it wisely and learn to use it will save you shots for sure.

I've had the same wedge setup for years. PW,50,54 and the oldest club in my bag the 60. I just bought a new 58 wedge yesterday to replace it. I'm playing a new course regularly now and the bunkers are deep. 54 doesn't have quite enough loft and the low bounce on the 60 also made it hard to get out. I take your point though. Left that 60 short 1000's of times.

I take my 60T out once it gets into wintertime conditions. I don’t need the low bounce 60, which I hit a lot in summer of tight lies, once it gets softer. I add a 4w that’s amazing off the fairway so I can reach the par 5’s that naturally play longer in winter when there’s less roll (I have 10* driver, 13.5 2w and a 20* hybrid) I keep my 46,52 and 56 in the bag and just go long as you said if I’m shortsided. There’s plenty of room to get under the ball in softer conditions so an openface 56 covers bunker shots, rough and high soft shots. In summer I need the height and spin to stop it on the hard greens, in winter 56* is plenty given how soft the greens get.

I play a 45PW, 50GW, 55SW, and 60Lob. 45 = 120-135 50 = 101-119 55 = 60-100 60 = 15-59 All can be used for creative shots less than 100, depending on the trajectory I think the shot requires. I don't like to overswing clubs that impart a lot of spin. I tend to hit lower shots with wedges that stop quickly but don't spin back more than a couple feet, if at all. Which is why I play my 55/60 across such a wide range of distances. Inside 30 yds I probably use the 60 most of the time but around the greens, if there's nothing between me and the hole, I'll typically use a 4-wood with a putting stroke for shots more than 40 feet.

The low bounce LW is for hard sand and hard pan ground

I use both sand and lob. Lob wedge is go to club at 80 yards full shot, and within 30 yards 90% of the time. Sand wedge (56°) for 90% of my shots within 85 yards. I'm gunna be switching to a 54° sand wedge because the distance gapping isn't what I would like it to be between the lob and sand. It's only about 5 yards

I have a 46, standard Pitching, and a 60. Not knowing much, before, about the variety of wedges, I just learned to use my 60, for everything 90 yards and in. Much like figuring out different putters. I just figure out how to use what I have. That being said, I may go back to Goodwill and get a 54. :)

Personally i play 4 wedges, they are far more use to me than a 3 or 4 iron or 5 wood which i never use in a round

I use the same wedge setup. Pw is 43 though. then 50 gap, 54 sand and 60 lob. I only use the 60 if i need to get up and over a bunker with no green to work with. The 54 sw is very versatile
@timgreeson34733 жыл бұрын
I played a 4 wedge setup for years, but last year I went to a 46, 52 & 58 so I could add a 5 wood. Best decision for me. The 58 has heel & toe relief, so I can open it up to 64 if needed. My short game actually improved and I filled the 225-230 gap in my bag.

this is exactly what I did - but I added a 19 degree 3-hybrid - i also bent my PW to 47.5 degrees and play a 56/14 Mizuno T20 bent to a smig under 53 degrees - this gives me another wedge with heel & toe relief for around the green & bunker (this was the huge eureka moment for my game) as I now have a more useable 52/53 as it's designed to be opened up versus traditional 52-degree full-sole wedges without heel relief (give it a try)

IMHO, both clubs are critical. If anything I'd give up the gap wedge first, can still use PW to bump/run or do half swings to cover the gap from the GW. For my setup, SW has more bounce (12) and LW less bounce and the lie is how I decide which club to use. Thx for the vid, i'm a long time subscriber.

46 50 56 so bite the bullet (trade the 54) and have three wedges available for the sweet spot the more often. Good video esp if you want to get rid of the high lofts 😁

Right now I am carrying my PW at 45° and a SW with 56° and 12° bounce. I have a 50° AW on order and I still am not sure when I would be using it since I can pretty much handle any approach under 100 yds. with the two I already have. Anything around 15 to 35 yards to the flag I'll use the PW and on short chips or when needing to clear a bunker I'll use the SW. I'm looking forward to seeing what the AW can do for my game.

When starting out in golf no wedges, 9 iron open blade,open stance ,worked pretty well and yes I still have my day job , Golf around with one woid,iron and putter and youll see .

The higher in skill level, the more advantageous it is to use a 60/58 degree wedge. Pros and high level amateurs should be using a 60 to chip and a 56 out of bunkers. But for the common golfer, this is spot on

Two weeks ago he said he was a big believer in having four wedges haha. Most low shots can be manufactured with a pitching wedge. If you can’t get a 75 percent pw dialed in then use a gap. Replace 56 and 60 with a 58 and you got a solid 3 wedge setup

@dyn4mic87 Жыл бұрын
got rid of the 60 and have a PW, 50, 54 and 58. Gapping works well, rarely use the 58 except for bunkers, rarely use the 50 full shots (has 8 degree bounce for those harder/firmer lies similar carry to my PW), and use 54 for pretty much everything else. Contemplating taking the 50 out as it doesn't get used that much, can make my PW work the same distance just not as much spin
@txpatriot70382 жыл бұрын
I play P, 52 and 56. Most shots are the 52 because im very good with it. The 56 is for short and high loft. I had a 60 and never got good at it. For training I will use either my 52 or 56 exclusively to get force me to practice with them.
@stevehainestrumpet2 жыл бұрын
I typically will use a 60 for a short chip to an elevated green. The other case would be to hit over a tree or over a sand trap on a short distance. I agree that most of the time it is not needed.

If you think you have little use for a 60 then a 64 utilization is even less....specially given the distance and places you find balls at. Personally, I love my 60. In time, I think you will find it right back into your bag. Currently, I have 46, 50, 52, 56 and 60 in my bag Time will tell what suits you bag....cheers bud!

4 iron?
@scottysize3 жыл бұрын
@@MBATheGreat no. I added a 4 wood. This gave me more distance out of the rough and gives me a longer fairway wood off the tee for when my 3 wood isn’t working. I carry a strong 3 wood for off the tee. (13.5 degrees) My 4 wood is a strong 5 wood and fills in the gap between my 3 and 5.

I've got the K grind too im my 54 and 60. but feel i have too much bouce (14 deg). Why do you think the K grind is so good?
@christucker72793 жыл бұрын
@@BetterLife2023 it does feel like a lot of bounce at times. Only place I feel comfortable with it is on the bunker. It helps not to dig in and it just slides through the sand. On the fairway it’s not the best for me. I like the lower bounces on the grass

Within 50, definitely my 60. I practice clock positions of the backswing (7-8-9) and am consistent at 20-30-40. The 54, for me is 90 to 50 (although a full swing with the 60 is not unreasonable... for me.

I also have a 54 degree wedge for sand shots and 40-80 yard pitch shots. I finished my fourth game of the year using a chipper instead of a 58 or 60 degree wedge. I was knocking it out of the park with the chipper. Chipper stays - 58 and 60 are out for me.
