In the mid 90's I was invited to play at the Newport CC in Newport RI. It was a tournament and they had a 4 man slot for the military members from the Naval War College. The Admiral invited me to be on this team. I was way out of my league here in the wallet department. I was a pretty good golfer and all the confidence a fighter pilot could put on display. After the round, I was in the bar and struck up a conversation with a "lady" who asked me what I thought about tearing down a house that was "distracting" on the 14th tee (not sure on the hole). I said "I'm sorry", but I cannot afford to buy a home much less tear it down. I asked her what she did to afford buying homes and having them removed.....she said "my sister and I are the heir to the Campbell Soup Corp". Without thinking....I asked her what she was worth. To my surprise, she said about $2 billion. I said in that case: you should buy me another beer. Good times.

Country Club mooching is an art form! There’s a classic story at of the big 3 in ATL area… some old timer gamed and practiced at this club for years and years. Like, he was a fixture. Knew all the guys in the pro shop, bag drop, starter, a bunch of members, etc. He was there 4-5 days a week. Never officially made tee times or purchased anything in the pro shop. He’d always just be there practicing, chucking it up, and the starter would just work him in. Until one day… he invited a friend who showed up early… presents himself as “guest of Mr So-and-so”... They didn’t have his name on the tee sheet. They got to looking and dude is not and never was a member! The gig was up. The guest had no idea his buddy wasn’t a member! Awkward. LOL

I was a caddy at a private CC for a summer years ago in high school. Members and guests generally tipped well especially the winners out of a foursome but there were exceptions. I thought it was ludicrous I got paid to walk around in beautiful weather on manicured landscapes. Several things stick out for me. One, I was amazed at how many members asked me which club they should use for a shot, when they had money riding on it. I had the rule book in my pocket and had read some magazine articles (it was the ‘70s) but that was the depth of my knowledge. I did okay. Second, we had ball washers at every tee, but the CC taught us to clean golf balls in our mouths, and on occasion, a member who wanted to flex for his guests would ask us to do it. It did not dawn on me until later how much chemicals we were probably ingesting by doing that. Fortunately it was very infrequent. Third, they let caddies golf for free on Thursdays. I went only once, because Thursdays were the main ground maintenance and watering days so it was a really crappy experience. Fourth, we had a residential development along one side of the front nine, and some golfers (usually guests as I recall) would slice into the residential area. We would go look for their ball. I didn’t want to spend any more time than I had to jumping fences, getting yelled at, and facing pissed-off dogs. So I carried sleeves of the most popular balls our pro shop sold, and noted which balls each golfer was using. When one of them sliced, I would disappear into the residential area, do a five-Mississippi, and come back out with their ball. The only times it didn’t work is when a golfer had a weird ball or they were monogrammed. Finally, after the front nine, the members would hit the snack bar and leave us outside watching the clubs. The guys who ran the snack bar were thick as thieves with us caddies, and if the member didn’t get a hot dog and a drink for the caddy, the snack bar guys had ways of subtly embarrassing them. I never witnessed that firsthand of course because I was outside watching the clubs but those guys were masters of subliminal humiliation. I’m glad I did it but didn’t go back the following summer.

Great video Mr. Shortgame and you're pretty spot on! Being respectful to members, staff and building good relationships is most important in my book regardless of being a member or a guest. Growing up I was a caddie and a member underneath my dad for a private club in north jersey. I enjoyed everything about caddying, except that I would rather be playing. However, they had a celebrity scramble and I was excited when they asked me to hit celebrity shots and counted it towards their score. That was fun!

You’re missing out if you really enjoy golf. Those courses that are $100-125+ greens fees are just on a different level than even you’re nicest public courses and even some private clubs. Of course you can get much higher than that, but typically at that $125-200 range you’re playing on pristine conditions from tee box to green, hitting ProVI’s on the range and having drinks delivered from range to the 19th hole. I grew up on the local courses, old school guys getting hammered having a good time. When I grew up and discovered the courses I couldn’t afford it was life changing. 😂 I am nothing special but I am able to treat myself here and there on a nice course, and achieved the lifelong dream of being a CC member at a nice club. I’m very blessed and appreciative. I hope you can make it out onto a top notch course one day, and hope you enjoy yourself and soak it in.

I am a member of a nice club here in Texas. It's not about "status"like some people want to think. The reason i joined was i went out on a Saturday at 12:30 in March, beautiful 75° day and rode by myself and finished the round in 2 hours and 15 minutes. I was sold. I paid $475/month but no fee otherwise except a cart. I often get in 12-16 rounds a month and about 1-2 hours of practice a week. Depending on how often you can get out, it can be a pretty good deal.

I was a guest with a friend at a private club last month. Around hole 8 I flipped my hat around backward (I have a habit of doing this without thinking about it). By the time we finished the hole my friend, the member, got a call on his cell phone from the GM of the club asking I flip my hat around cause another member called to complain.

Your entitlement attitude is what is killing a lot of things in life, including manners, decorum, and otherwise being respectful of other people and places. You're the guy weaving in and out of traffic and then getting pissed when someone is going too slow in front of and around you. Just a complete lack of awareness of where you are, or who are you around, and the lack of giving a crap of what other people think is YOUR problem, and not anyone else's.

Really enjoy your videos. I’ve been to a few clubs where even the restaurant only takes a member number as well, but I always offer to pay for both my food and round. Of course the member rarely allows you to, so I just pick up their next round when we play outside their club.

Would love to experience the country club scene as although we have them over here it is the exception rather than the rule. If we play a landmark course it is generally just for the golf.

Been a member of a private club a very long time and live on the course. Biggest advantage to me is time and things for the family beyond golf (pool, tennis, restaurants, clubs, junior programs, etc). I play 5-6 times a week and never worry about crowds. Plus sometimes I might only play 5-6 holes if just working on something. We also have a group of us who do a summer long golf competition two evenings each week. Lastly our pro can get us on most other private courses in our area at really good rates without playing with a member. What I would recommend to a visitor is to do the things you would do in any new situation…ask questions beforehand and know what is expected. Many clubs have different expectations and rules but most of all it is golf! have fun, meet people, network and enjoy. There are “snob” types at many private clubs…everyone knows the ones to avoid but in saying that, there are many that have come in handy to know!

As a former caddie, this is the right mentality. The “$40 average” is often the minimum and can hurt the caddie’s rating depending on if the club factors tips into your ranking (leading to promotions, scholarships, etc.). Thank you!

I think people forget a basic fact that you have a caddie who is working for 4 hours humping your bag, finding your ball and giving advice as your personal guide. That's worth at least $25 per hour.

I think it's sad that your tip average factors into your rating. The tip people leave is so subjective and is often much more of a reflection of the tipper than the tippee. You get a couple of cheapskates (or a few guests who were lucky enough to be asked to play but simply don't have the money to be tipping $100), and your tip average is dragged down through no fault of your own.

Played Streamsong recently, and paid for a cart since I played 36/day. I had my own caddie for the rounds (not shared with other players). I wasn’t sure what was customary there and ended up asking the caddie at the end of all my rounds, to which he answered $150/round. That seemed high, but I wonder if it would have normally been split with another player or 2.

My monthly golf membership here in the Philippines is $100. That includes a locker and shower facility. Caddie fee is $10.00 per 18 and a umbrella girl is $7.00. There are some beautiful golf courses here, amazing mountain and ocean views. Take care back there and God bless.

@@scottcamuto8410 The umbrella girl is optional but the caddie is not. She follows me and holds an umbrella over me best she can, it's very hot here. After the round her and the caddie clean my clubs and shoes. For me the heat is no problem and I really don't need someone to do that but, the $7.00 I give her will put rice and fish on her family table for a few days. Oh and if I loose a ball she will have one of her sons find it and give it to me the next time I play. I appreciate that type of effort.

Don't be cheap. Bring plenty of cash and tip well, especially the cart staff. Even if by chance they aren't there to clean your clubs at the end of a round leave something on the steering wheel. They do way more than clean clubs over the course of the day.

You’re a legend! I used to be a cart boy at a country club and we rarely got tipped. But I always remembered the members that consistently left a couple bucks. The cart boys clean clubs, clean carts, fetch members’ bags, maintain the driving range, clean and rake the putting/chipping green, do the laundry to clean the towels in a cart, refill sand for fixing divots, and the list goes on. A couple bucks here and there to your cart staff goes a long way for a kid making minimum wage

I’m trying to put myself through university and having members tip well has allowed me to continue my education. Most members at my course are courteous and if they tip i make sure to clean their clubs extra well. There will always be the rude members who yell/scream at you for not having a cart ready for them when it’s just me filling the range, getting clubs, picking balls, cleaning short game area, washing and pulling up carts, and more. I sprint around all the time to try to give better service because I know if i could afford $2000 a month golf course i would want my stuff handled properly from the staff. if unsure, ask the caddie master what the going rate is. At my club, it used to be $80 a bag, but now they recommend $100 to $120. I played at a top club near me and the caddie master says $125 minimum, but most guys pay $150 a bag. But that is at a top top club

All the personalized balls I find I either give back to the member or there is a jar that we turn the balls that we find. It’s a nice curiosity when you get your ball back that the rough monster ate the day or two before.

When I traveled for work back in 90s I would just find nearby US open or Tour courses and go to the range late afternoons…I looked the part and occasionally would casually join a group at the of the day …..only one course could I not get past security and told them I was lost looking for a bogus address.

As far as tipping?? Think about how much 4 to 5 hours of your time is worth. Then tip accordingly. One thing not to do??? Do NOT get angry and throw a fit. This goes for everywhere but especially as a guest at a nice CC. I do also offer to pay for things all day...even though I usually don't get taken up. I just make sure to get drinks for the group when I have the opportunity. Also one last thing. If it's a caddy club, try to lighten your bag as much as possible. Take a sunday bag if you have one..

I was able to play Southern Hills a number of times, one thing that was a huge no no - putting your shoes on in the parking lot. “That is why we have a locker room”. Also, no loud or obnoxious behavior. While it wasn’t as bad as a library it was closer to that then the other way.

I just don't understand the "no changing shoes in the parking lot" rule. While I respect that clubs have their rules, and I'll live by them if I play there or choose to become a member, it seems like the most ridiculous thing to have a problem with someone changing their shoes by their car. It's like the ultimate in snobbery.....a rule that should have died in the 1940's.

Thank you so much for uploading this video about the do's and don'ts of Private Golf Clubs. It's very useful even though it's hard for EVERYONE to obey etiquette these days. Did you know that I played miniature golf as a Girl Scout? I got a 🕳️ in one when it shot under the windmill at the last golf 🕳️. My dad is a member of a private/athletic social club in the city. Anything made of denim is NOT allowed to be worn on either location where members or guests enter the property that's located anywhere near them. This is the 👗 code that I'm talking about and it's my favorite part about going to a place that a family member that I live with at home became a member at when he was a preteen.

I'm a caddy at a private club. We get paid by members, tpyically if there is a guest members will be responsible for covering their guests caddy fee. The caddy fee range is given based on caddy's experience and golfer's discretion, they can basically give any amount they want. I've been at this club 2 years now, and typically get paid 80-90 per bag for a walking round. The pricing changes for a riding round obviously, and guests will often slip me cash if they felt I did a good job.

"stealing something"? When you trespass on the property of a private club and use their facilities without permission, that is actually breaking the law. And you are stealing from that club. But I guess in this day and age of everyone having their own "truth" you'll disagree with me on that one. Personally I think it's bad manners to do this, but I guess I was raised differently than a lot of people these days.

Every country club is different. Some are more exclusive than others. However, in the town that I live in my club is fairly reasonable. You are going to spend anywhere from $500-$700 per month. Granted, this is quite a bit of money. However, when you factor in full access for families you get to enjoy pools, tennis courts, a golf course, daily restaurant options, summer camps, etc. you can make friends as well. That’s about $125 per person for a family of four, per month. I personally think that if you can fit it in to your budget, then it’s very well worth it.

Depends on the CC.a lot have relaxed their rules as CCs aren’t what they use to and not as popular as they once were.my big thing is the guest.if I invite a guest I’ll put their fees on my account, but expect them to get drinks and tip the cart girl and tip for food. I’ve had guests show up to golf in flip flops and horrible shirts which make me look bad.had a guest who got butt hurt and cursed a group of members out.I drove straight to the parking lot with 3 holes left to golf and we were done.it’s not a public course and the mindset has to be a little different.I actually score better on public courses and golf them more than the CC. The great pro is that the CC is less crowded on the course.

At Erin Hills the other guys in the group had caddies, I didn’t. The caddies were so good to me I gave them $20 a piece. At really exclusive clubs (Cypress Point) bring cash to buy stuff or have charges sent to your club. At resorts ask at the counter what the typical tip is for a caddy. One place they told me $40, but the caddy was so bad I gave him $20 and told him what he did wrong. Finally, in Australia if you wear your hat inside the clubhouse, be prepared to buy a lot of drinks.

Well, not breaking any rules. Although I do change shoes in the parking lot. I never go in the members locker room. I also don't shower or any of that. I show up clean :-) Overall, the people where I've played (members and employee's) have been great. If I lived closer to this club (located in south Charlotte, NC) and they didn't have a 5 year waiting list, I would consider joining.

Always tuck your shirt in before you get there so you don't look like a slob doing it in the parking lot. Never wear your golf shoes into the clubhouse, always change into them in the locker room. Hat off indoors is a must. Obviously, must wear a collared shirt and NO JEAN SHORTS! LOL On a serious note, no cargo shorts either. If you are a guest and have never been a member at a private club, then the member is going to have your guest fee charged to his account. Normally it's proper etiquette to invite that member to your club to even things out. So if you can't invite that member to your club, then offer to take them out to golf somewhere at an upscale public course where you pay and buy him/her dinner & drinks. I want to stay classy here, but if you don't do this, it will be your last time playing at his club as a guest. It's called reciprocation. Some clubs are non-tipping clubs, so ask the member what the tipping rules are prior to the day you arrive at the club (bring plenty of cash just in case). Also take it easy on the alcohol as you don't want to do or say something that will tarnish the image/reputation of the member. Be humble, graceful and very polite. Oh, it is very rude to be late, so always get there at least one hour before your tee time, but I suggest closer to 2 hours. If any of these things sound uppity to you, then you don't belong at a private country/golf club and you should decline the invitation from the member to save both of you face.

The only logic I can think of (other than the antiquated idea of people not wanting to see you changing the shoes in their immaculate parking lot) is not wanting dirty/muddy golf shoes in their clubhouse. Even spikeless shoes have tread that can be a bit destructive on carpet or wood floors.

I always offer to pay or take my host out to lunch. $100 sounds about right if you're caddy is with you for 4+ hours...especially if the caddie cleans your clubs and shoes after the round. I'm a Club Corp member and a couple of my biggest complaints are: their website and app are complete trash...worse then useless. Their customer service is dreadful.

I am fortunate that I get to play at some exclusive clubs 8-10 times per summer. I always defer to the caddies....they know more than I do. A good caddie is a big part of the experience

@@iec7587 that's good to hear. You should know by the second hole if your guy is any good. Sadly though a self centered attitude ruins many rounds for players. My job was to get someone around in the lowest score possible. Most days that's like making chicken salad out of chicken turd. Nowadays the guest I see are just trying to hit 2 miracle shots that they can talk about at the bar later. The fact they didn't break 100 doesn't bother them.

Question; the club i am looking to join charges an extra walking trail fee which seems silly. While I know clubs want you to spend money on carts but charging a member additional charges after spending big money on initation fees and monthly dues is excessive. Let me know if I have the wrong perspective here please.

Each club is different and you have to decide for yourself what works for you. Some private clubs do charge a trail fee for walking, and you might look at what your monthly dues are and then factor in the trail fee. My guess is that the dues are cheaper than a club who doesn't charge one. Also, a trail fee for walking is a way to charge those that play a lot for their usage of the course. More rounds = more maintenance for the course, so if you are using it more, then you should pay more IMHO. Or, just take a cart and you get that fee either way. It's really what you decide works for you. If you have 10 clubs, you'll probably have 10 different ways they choose to charge you for certain things. The all inclusive club is probably costing you a ton per month, so that's something to consider. Food and beverage minimums also come into play at clubs as well.

Would of loved to be in my teens walking the golf courses getting little tips 👌🏻 was playing football all the time but would of been good to do both and get koney out of it. Gets the kids of the streets and stop what’s going on now with knives and drugs 💯

The nice thing about being a member at a Private club is everyone lives and breathes golf. That's if you are at a Golf Club. Full on Country Clubs are different. That being said I hate tipping over and above for services I'm already paying a fortune for. I'll tip at the bar and pitch in for the Holiday Employee pool. That's it.

I can't fathom $100 tips! Does he not get paid for caddying? Should I tip the house cleaner $100 every week? How about the lawn care guy? Another $100. I get a guy making $250,000 a year and a member tipping that big, but it's a little much for a lot of people who get invited to these clubs. I've turned down some invites because I knew the greens fee and tips would take away my public course golfing for the rest of the month!

I just don't like the atmosphere that comes with country clubs/private courses, it's not for me. I've golfed at several private clubs in Arizona, and they r just okay course wise. But, I would much rather go play a challenging public course like Papago, Quintero, Wikopah, Victory @ Verrado, Sterling Grove, Southern Dunes, and enjoy myself much more.

I've enjoyed ClubCorp in the past, but I don't think this is a good value anymore. Each club limits number of guest tee times to only one or two so booking at another club is nearly impossible. On the do's / don'ts, I would list pace. Guests tend to play slower because they feel like they have to play their best. This slows down the entire course and really pisses off the members. This is especially true on the weekends when the members are trying to get out in 3 hours. To avoid this, get a later tee time on the weekends or play on a weekday.

I worked at Thorneblade they try to get you to treat the members like family. But if they invite you to do anything other than play golf with them don’t. They’ll treat you like trash afterwards they try to make it look like your not a 2nd class citizen but your definitely treated that way.

I played a charity event at a private club and they were upset that I took the cart to the driving range. I was early and never had that issue before. So my tip - ask if one can take the cart to practice area!

Never wear your golf shoes into the clubhouse from the parking lot. And yes, the hat is a no in the clubhouse 95% of the time. If you walk directly into the locker room it's ok, but never wear it into the bar, etc.

So, this is something ive been guilty of in the past. I am a private member, with a big heart. Im also a part of a lot of forums and online golf related groups in my local area. One of the big no no's is inviting people from forums out to play the course. Sometimes, there are people that want to get a taste of the club courses around and I wanna give a helping hand, unfortunately, the head club pro was also in one of the groups and saw what I was trying to do. The next day, he approached me on the chipping green and politely told me to not do that as they want to be sure those that come to the course are known individuals, at least to those whom are already in the club. Sounds a bit pretentious, but I get it. You wanna maintain the clubs reputation and dont wanna have to be on any kind of damage control. Only invite friends, friends of friends or family to come play with you at your club.

I have played several private clubs over the years. Perhaps, if you have a family and you need to occupy them during the down times, then maybe. However I have a dozen quality daily fee tracks within a 45 minute drive. I can rotate during the season. One course for the next several years would bore me out of my mind.

Private golf clubs can be a great experience given that the place has a chill environment. All of those silly rules can be extremely tedious, what’s it’s matter to you if my shirt (which was designed to be untucked) isn’t tucked? No hats in the clubhouse? I didn’t know we were in the army🤦🏻‍♂️😂 the gatekeeping that goes on in the golf community is just pathetic, no wonder everyone thinks it’s for old guys only.

I find it discouraging because they are a type of cast system. These are the best courses on the planet and your not worthy to play them because of your financial means. On the flip side most public courses get beat up because of so much play. It just makes me sad.
