Patti takes it to another level she gives me chills. For me, she's the greatest she ALWAYS had that talent, versatility & easy power even as a kid. Her power is untouchable. Gift from GOD! She's taken care of that instrument and its taken care of her. I saw them both in concert Patti is an underappreciated national treasure. Glad she achieved recognition later in her career. My father was always a fan from her girl group days. Grew up hearing her. Both Whitney & Patti are inspirational powerhouse singers. Jenifer Holiday was another phenom. Jen & Whitney sadly, have passed. Patti is still with us an enduring diva. Gotta respect longevity. Patti takes it hands down, she inspires, awes, makes me cry she's that good. Her gift is intimidating---seriously. Whitney's gift doesn't. Whitney is full of studio craft, the way she uses the microphone. Her voice was never as strong or dominant as Ms. Patti or Chaka. This is one of the most respectful comment sections I’ve visited for a vocal comparison video. I avoid these videos normally because of how vicious and obsessive fans can be. As for the comparison itself, this just shows you how singers can be exceptional in different ways and still be on the same level. Whitney has clarity, ease, and tone while Patti has raw power, five lungs, and an unforeseen heady quality to her upper belts. I would’ve loved to see Whitney-and any singer for the matter-last as long as Patti is. This was a great video! I throughly enjoyed it.

Whitney had that vibrato that really made your jaw drop..and she could hold it forever. Patti?...is all B to C to G-notes..and tremendous power. "Somebody Loves You, Baby" is one of those songs that shows off her ability to GO BEYOND the Cs and Bs, too. Listen to her earlier solo albums, and all you can do is shake your head...because NOBODY sings like that, but her.And That glissando she shows off, is/was a thing of beauty. I recall that she low-key outsing Whitney in their "Bridge Over Troubled Water" duet but Whitney gladly returned the favour in their "I Say A Little Prayer" duet. Another vocalist who truly stood toe to toe vocally with Patti, is Michael Bolton; he truly held his own. Spinto Tenor standing up to a Dramatic Soprano; definitely one for the books.

Those are some real powerhouses along with some other late and greats and little known greats. They just don't make them like they used to. She has an ethereal range, vocal agility, and power that is unparalleled. Whitney was great but no voice on this earth, living or dead can match Patti Labelle. Luther said, "If the universe wanted a representative, Patti would be it and James Budd Ellison, stated and rightfully so, she has the greatest voice that has ever existed. It is too bad, that when we look back at history and her live recordings, will finally see how Patti stands out from all the rest. I think of Patti Labelle as a savage dragon, capable of taking down any vocal competitor. Whitney, for me, was a solid block of gold -- consistently good from top to bottom, outside in. They are different. Both excellent. I just prefer Whitney's tempered and more refined vocal delivery.

it seems to me that houston has a bigger more powerful voice, the notes are heavier in houston, that of patti are too but less percussive and resonant, she mixes the more I find e we hear a difference in the resonance and the ring

Patti is definitely more powerful like gloatal power, don't know where it comes from but she could sing whitney under a table. However whitney has a much more beautiful voice, the sound she creates is gorgeous. She was blessed. I also thinks she respects melody alot more. Compare her version of star spangled banner to Patti's - whitney respected the notes of the song and still employed powerhouse vocals.

Whitney was a product of Aretha, Her mother, Patti, Dione, etc….. wit that said her studying them all and creating her own sound using a bit of all of them, and having a great voice made her great. Her downfall sadly were just the drugs. She’s great I’m sure she’d be unstoppable if drugs weren’t involved. Whitney was able to pull off belts, agility, soft smooth, silky sounds.

Beyonce has no volume and is not a powerhouse vocalist. Hate to burst the bubble. She is not called to sing at any major event. And when she sings off the concert stage her voice has no umph. She is not a Barbara stress singing wise but she is a great entertain and blessed with an overall package.
