Oh Ryan, I'm so sorry you have to move your garden. Simply gutting. In my own life I've had to pick up and move many times, but I've gardened at every location, even rentals that I knew I'd be leaving in a year's time. It's just what you do, even though everyone tells you it's bonkers to improve a property you don't own. It's still heartbreaking for you, even if you have the will to begin all over. Sending you bushels of hugs and support. That said, you've had so many successes this season! It's all down to your incredible capacity to focus and get things done. (You're a machine! ) But I think it's just as important that you're so open to what the growing season has to teach you, about marketing your produce, timing your crops, etc. You bring no unhelpful ego to the venture, just diligence and and that beautiful passion for growing. Good on you my friend! You will make it work wherever you find yourself. 🌱🐝💕

This really pulled on our heart-strings, Ryan. However, your knowledge is priceless and you want to stick to being your own boss. This is do-able with backing, and, aside from the community plot, have you considered asking for crowd funding? The fact that you communicate with folks all over the world adds great value to your brand and people can see the fruits of your labour. Only saying because the simplest route is better that being in hock to someone else whether it is financially or owing people favours etc. Do you think folks might let you rent somewhere which is unworked on a longer term basis if you are adding value and potential to their land? Heck, my experience of country folk is that people do care about the individual if they can see an outcome which is suitable and advantageous to them! Obviously, things go a bit deeper than you are letting on! So, I can only wish you all the best with your plans. You have learnt a lot and thanks for sharing this with us. Take care. All the best, Mike and Jaws.

Mine too, duderino. I have had a few ask if I would consider something like that, and I will think on it. I will be exploring the local options and will keep YT posted. Oh I’m gutted that next year will be your last on that piece of land, my heart sank for you. HOWEVER, that piece of land has taught you SOOOO much Ryan. You know you can do it now. You know you want to do it, and on the next plot things will go so much quicker because you know the setup and suppliers that work for you and the produce. I appreciate how it may have messed with your head since finding out. I wish I could buy the plot for you so you could stay. Our field is only rented, and the owner could take it back at any point, and I’d be devastated... but I’m not trying to make a living from it. What I’m trying to say, very badly, is that everything happens for a reason. As cliché as that sounds I totally believe it. It may not seem like that just now, but keep your chin up my friend and make next year the best yet. I have your email, so expect a message soon. Take care 😊🌱

Ryan, It sounds to me like you had a successful year overall. Down the road you'll be having fond memories of how you spent this past spring and summer. Start your search for land as soon as possible. Include pictures of how you improved your father in law's land if possible. Don't be afraid to approach small land owners like me. I own about 10 acres. I would love someone to take an interest. Talk to people that are retirement age and older. If you look around you will see land sitting unused. Find some where there is a small garden stll in existence. That type of person may be interested and I'll bet that the money part will be secondary. I know it would be for my wife and I. Take care. Man, that’s such a bummer. I had a garden on someone else’s property, much smaller so not as much work as you’ve put in, but I had run pipe up to a creek for irrigation, set up a tiny greenhouse, spent a bunch of time building up the soil so that I was finally growing decent stuff. Then we got our own property, had to build a house first, now I’m starting back from scratch, but at least I know that everything going in is mine. I did learn a ton during those years and I think that I appreciate more what I have now because of that experience. Don’t get discouraged - keep at it. BTW I’m in Southeast Alaska (coastal Canada) so everybody thinks that it’s super cold here, but I’m actually in Zone 7b because we’re down by the water. You’re climate is definitely more gnarly 🥶

I so appreciate you giving your "3 things", and WOW, those are huge! Not being able to farm this current property is definitely a game changer. You could let it be a game stopper, but I cannot imagine you allowing that to happen. You learned so many things. The value of the different crops and the amount that actually sells is a real learning curve. And just when you think you've got it figured out... it changes! Kind of like a game of dodge ball! You totally did it mate and you met those challenges head on and each time you do it is going to be better. I'm shocked to hear that herbs didn't do well on the selling front. I like kohl rabi sauteed in butter with a little nutmeg. Hoping to hear you find something, have you thought about patreon and us supporting you to do this?
@Mrsnufleupagus5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Em! I look at it a bit differently, but I am pretty hard on me, lol. I will have so much of a better plan with the herbs. I sure hope I find something too pal! I have had a few friends ask and I promise to think about it. Thank you so much for you kind offer my friend:)

Wow, frickin awesome intro. How did you get the camera out of the stove without burning your arm off. lol Very creative camera angles! Yes you can!! and you did. Weeds did not win. lol 1-1. Winning season next year. Yeah, dang watering takes a long time by hand. I'm going to look into those timer things you put on your hydrant next year. Oh, man, that is a bummer you only get another year there. You put so much work into that land. I remember the thistle wars. So sorry Ryan. You will come out on top. You're just that kind of guy. You have learned a lot. I've learned a lot from you too. Endeavor to persevere. . . Awesome update.

Kinda wondered what was happening in your world, assumed you were just busy. Where ever you end up will be yours and will feel a lot better.....good option is for you and Gail to move and buy and old homestead. You'll make it work no matter what you decide. When things are rough, I remind myself: 1. Everything happens for a reason and 2. We are exactly where we're supposed to be. Hugs Deb 🌞✌🏻️

Dang Ryan, sorry to hear that you have to move man. I know that was hard for you. One thing is for sure though, I know you will pick up the pieces up and be back better than ever. I agree it was a huge learning experience for you as well as me as I followed along with you.

Hey brother. I have studied food production since 1976. #1 seller in all markets even beating tomatoes in the summer, greens. #1 producer, greens. #1 money maker, greens. Shade tolerant, greens. Cold tolerant, greens. Many kinds of, greens. Excellant price per pound, greens. Does great in hydro, greens. Food shortages are here. You will sell everything you grow, best investment, seeds. Grow indoors under low wattage, low cost lights, greens. Not nutrient picky, greens.

Some things take frost well. Spinach, claytonia, tatsoi, some kale. Some things tolerate just above freezing, some cool.

I'm trying Forgey, been a bit tough. The area I am in is under 1/8 acre and I had half of that in production this year. I don't need tons of space...just the right space.

Hi Ryan, great video as always Funnily enough when I was watching your videos shot at Susanna's farm I was thinking that some sort of collaboration between the the two of you would be mutually beneficial. It strikes me that she has plenty of land that is under utilised and you obviously have the work ethic and growing skills?
