Ukraine has wanted to join NATO for years due to Russian aggression, which resulted from Putin’s aspirations to recreate a greater Russia by annexing former Soviet states. Ultimately this entire crisis leads back to aggression from the Kremlin over the last 20 years or so. If you want to blame someone for this entire debacle, blame Vladimir Putin and his oligarchs. It's kind of unsettling how similar the Russian government is portrayed to being just Putin: surrounded by yes men who overestimate their absurdly aggressive and egotistical leader because he won't hesitate to shoot them for disagreeing with him, with the rest of the populace suffering the entirety of the consequences in a war they had no say in. Russians and Ukrainians have traditionally held a strange bond in many ways, many even having cultural exchanges where the people like one another but their governments despise one another, so that ending really hurts to see because of how true it is.
