Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

I made my first lotion bar last night which was 3oz Butters 3oz beeswax and 3 oz oils.....no recommendations just amounts. I am so excited to know I didn't mess up with my oils. I used 1oz olive, 1.5 grapeseed and .5 vitamin E. I was so worried about the oils. Shew!!!!

One more question....maybe.... so I’ve found a few recipes that are just Shea, coconut, beeswax, fragrance. There are no “soft oils”. What is your opinion on them? I’m trying to work with ingredients I have on hand, which is minimal at the moment. The hanks for all your soapy wisdom!

I’ve not made lotion bars yet, but have been asked too, so the research is on. I love that you share so many of your recipes. I do still have a few questions. What kind of extracts do you use? Also how much in general, it looked like she just squeezed a few pipette worth in, but it was off the scale. Also, is there a calc in existence like the soap calc to help find a good lotion bar balance? Or do you have recommendations on how to achieve that good balance with different ingredients? I’m still fairly new to the soaping world and the only other thing I’ve made are your bath melts....which....OMG heaven in the bathroom!! I absolutely Love love love them!!!!! Though mine still aren’t as pliable as yours upon putting in the mold they still firm up and seem to work just fine. Anyway.... point! I don’t know what I’m doing.....any and all advice welcome. Excuse my erratic brain probing, instead of sparkly shiny distractions its more like soapy sudsy distractions. May the suds be with you!! Ok, my dorkdom is coming out. Later.

I’m down with the geekdom; welcome to the tribe. ❤️ There aren’t calcs out there to develop a good lotion bar, but a good rule of thumb to start is 60% hard oils and butters to 40% soft. Extracts are all mostly from brambleberry because they’re local for me, and we use them at 1-3% of the total batch weight. Have fun!

Hey! I kept the scale visible and tared between additions. Gives you an ounce per item so you can swap out oils and butters as you would like. Max fragrance load for this was 5% tbw. :) 1 tablespoon per pound of oils.

So informative. Thanks I’ll try to make them. I like the information. I made some exfoliating bars yesterday it was ALOT but I would love to master soap. What did you put in before the arrowroot? Do you help people create recipes or do you have a book? How do you make a soap ph balanced for the vagina? Something like Yoni soap.

Could you explain what you mean by holding the heat for Shea butter, I understand it can go grainy, however how do we hold heat? Thanks love!
@TheLoveweaver
@TheLoveweaver 2 жыл бұрын
She means holding keeping it hot after it's melted for 2o minutes or some of the crystallized pieces will not fully melt and it will result in a grainy oil. It's not enough to melt the butter, you must hold in in the heat for 20 mins. I hope that helps?

All in ounces - but riddle me this: if you used these measurements but did grams instead of ounces, would the ratios be the same? I mean, you’d obviously get a lot less product, but. Same product? I dunno - I’ve never worked in grams or given it much thought until this exact moment. 😂
@Kymberlee_W
@Kymberlee_W 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrsSoapAndClay that depends. You really need to convert each measurement , ie 7.6 ounces doesn't equal 76 grams and would throw off the measurements wildly if not converted properly.
@myhairypillow5019

@@MrsSoapAndClay if you work in parts it would work. Well at least I'm trying it. So 2 oz .I put as 2 parts. Then I made each part a consistent measurement (ex. 10 grams). I'll let you know if it worked. 2 parts beeswax, 1 part cocobutter 4 parts oils and 2 parts shea (mango).( making a small batch)

I made a batch of lotion bars and I thought I was doing well until they were cooled and are so soft you could use as almost a liquid lotion. My question is , couls I melt these down slowly and adjust the beeswax and maybe cocoa butter or kokum butter to harden them or is it better to just throw them out and start over when I am not fighting a bad migraine? Thank you so much for your knowledge and for sharing with us. Some days you just crack me up and that's a good thing.

What a good question! I’ve always been a bit confused by that as well. So what I do is heat it up in the microwave and leave it in there for 20 minutes, turning on the microwave for 30ish seconds every few minutes. Not the most precise way, but it seems to work fine. 😂

What was the extract you added at the very end? And about how much did you add? Also, I’m not familiar with the “Magic” Fragrance, would you mind giving the full name and manufacturer?
