I made a dish soap in a similar style, though not identical. I made it lemon scented, with lemon zest powder as an abraisive and annatto color infused into the oil, and around 6% castor oil to help the lather. Also mine is in 2oz muffins rather than big blocks. Anyway, I'm very pleased with it so far, and I agree that low-superfat coconut oil soap is good for dishes.

Coconut Oil is the most cleansing oil and at 0% superfat there is no fat left in your saponified soap which means no clogging the drains or your washing macine or your septic tank. To add color, take a bit of your already measured melted soap and put in a dish/ bowl/small measuring cjp amd mix in your color and keep the oil warm. Blend oil and lye water mixture to trace, medium and add your color and blend more to make sure the lye saponifies that oil as well. Dump in molds, let dry. From what I understand 1 Tbsp of citric acid ( i would put food grade) is mixted with lye water without adjusting either lye or water measurements. Let Dry approx 2 to 4 hrs and cut into blocks or bars, if u wait to long the soap log will get very hard. 😊

I use this dish soap and I love it! It lasted a long time, but I would definitely get a draining soap dish. My little sisters came to visit and didn't drain the dish soap whole they were here and it went fast on that week haha but it lasted months beforehand and I think will last longer with a soap dish. And it does a fantastic job of cutting through grease. I was skeptical at first, but this works so well, I'm hooked!

I am also curious about how effective a melt & pour soap base would be, for making a solid dish soap? Ever experimented with that? @MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 3 жыл бұрын
Ha - I wish I could take credit, but this is just basic chemistry at work. When you approach soapmaking from that vein, everything comes together nicely. Normally I put my soap nuts directly into my lye solution, so that 180 degree + heat does a nice job extracting the awesome before adding it to the oils.

@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Soap nuts are dried shells of a shrub berry - related to lychee. I think they became popular in crunchy circles as a way to wash your clothing instead of using laundry soap. Personally I don’t find that they are particularly cleansing on their own, but they do aide in lather and help to minimize soap scum and build up when paired with the appropriate oils in a soap recipe. :)

HELP! I've been wanting to make something similar for awhile and finally got some varieties of soap nuts. Today I just tried this but with only a 16 oz of oils batch run through soap calc with 97% coconut oil and 3% castor. I put a few soap nuts into the hot lye water and stired while dissolving the lye. Is it supposed to smell HORRIBLE? It immediately smelled like hot steamy nasty wet dog. I went through with the batch and it's also super dark. In rewatching the video it does seem like I didn't do the soap nuts right and should've put them in hot water first then cooled down before as you did. But is the soap gonna be safe to still use? @MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 4 жыл бұрын
That is correct! I mean, technically speaking that’s true of most soaps. Once saponification has completed, the bar has no more lye and is safe to use. Cure time is for losing of the water weight and the hardening of the bar and the doing of the things. With a soap like this, cure time is not the standard 4-6 weeks though - it won’t benefit from a long cure. :)

@MrsSoapAndClay

Hey! I don’t actually find it to be drying, but my hands are washed 1000 times a day and are impervious to most everything. In our consumer testing, nobody reported dry hands. Also, this particular recipe is used for 20+ grocery store wholesale accounts, and they all keep buying copious amounts of them with no skin drying reports, so I assume that it’s not bad for most individuals. Kindly share your thoughts
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay Жыл бұрын

@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 3 жыл бұрын
So I don’t know what benefit witch hazel would have with a dish soap, though I’ve used it for face soaps before! I’ve never added it to the lye solution; I have a feeling that it would react much like alcohols do in lye, so if you do so, use a very big mixing container and freeze the witch hazel. Does witch hazel freeze? Now my mind is wanting to mad scientist some stuff at the soap shop today! 🤪. Coffee (brewed) is great in dish soap for the desmellum factor!

@@MrsSoapAndClay Ok, from what research I did (after commenting of course haha) I didn't see anyone putting it to use in a dish soap and with it being astringent I don't know what benefits it would have either. Hey! I have a few videos on cure time, I think in the FAQ playlist. This concept we have of 4-6 weeks for cure of all soaps really isn’t backed by anything other than the repetition of the statement. The cure time for this one isn’t because it’s for dishes, but because a 100% coconut oil soap doesn’t need very long to fully lose its water weight and be ready for use. Happy soaping!
