i recently started hearing clicking when i lock my wheel to the right at low speeds on my 2011 Subaru forester, i was suspecting it to be the CV axle. I wasn't too sure if i'd be able to do it myself but after watching this video i feel pretty confident. Thank you for always going into great detail with all you videos :)

I've personally just found it easier to remove the 2 strut bolts and popping the ball joint out of the control arm. Don't remember ever having to take the brakes and such off to do any of mine. Did have to take that brake bolt out though to give enough slack on hose.

Excellent vid MrSubaru1387. It does make laugh the ease the bolts/nuts come off in your vids, the advantages living in a dry climate I suppose. Here in Fife, Scotland, I had to use a breaker bar to get the brake caliper mounting bolts off my 2013 Subaru XV with only 30,000 miles on the clock!. Every thread is given a liberal coating of copper slip/anti seize on reassembly.

when nuts get stuck in an impack socket, just grab the outside of the socket to give it resistance and doesnt just spin up to speed, point it down so gravity assists, and hit the trigger a bit till it starts "impacting" and itll rattle right out and fall gently on the ground.

It's cool to see these videos - Then I can see what My Mechanic has to go through when He works on My Car (& Why He gets paid $75 per hour. Ha! Ha!). Seriously though - I'm not mechanically skilled enough to do this job. Normally, I just drop the Car off & Tim (my mechanic) calls Me up when it is done. He shows Me the parts but I never watch him do the work - He did this CV job for Me... I realize why a good Mechanic get paid what they do - Not only do they have lots of overhead (Tools, Garage, Insurance, etc) but the knowledge, skill & experience to use all those Tools is what a customer actually pays for. I've had lots of different Mechanics & Cars over the years but when You find a good Mechanic - You want to keep him...

Thanks for a great video. I expect that I will to change a CV axle eventually. One point that I would like to clarify - I don't think that the axle nut sets the preload on the wheel bearing assembly. I changed a wheel bearing on my daughter's Impreza last year and I believe that the bearing has a solid inner race. That would mean that the torque on the nut does not set the preload on the bearings. It is possible that excessive torque on the nut resulting in excess clamp load on the inner race of the bearing could cause that bearing race to grow radially and increase the bearing preload and thus reduce the bearing life so it is still important to properly torque the nut.
@jrusnak69

There is a cheap handy magnetic tool that you attach to the rotor with a leveler that allows you to ensure you maintain alignment. I found it worked really well. Also I thought Subaru recommended replacing the bearing seal in the hub as the axle puts pressure on the seal when installed and can weaken the seal when the pressure is removed. Can you comment on that?

Here in the Upper Peninsula of MI we get 300+ inches of snow annually and road salt in proportion, so rust is the biggest destroyer of cars... I've been using Fluid Film to undercoat with decent success and it's kept my underbody in good shape including bolt heads. My '13 SV is still rust-free aside from the exhaust. Rotors came off with just a lil tap with a rubber mallet, didn't need the bolts to push them. My last car before that I could barely work on since the bolt heads had all rusted to the point where they weren't hex heads anymore... had to weld nuts on a few of them to extract the bolts. I'm thankful at least the newer Subaru's have underbody protection to keep crud off of the fuel/brake lines unlike anything made before 2010.

IT SOUNDS LIKE THE BRAKE ROTOR IS SCRAPPING ON SOMETHING I AM GUESSING ITS THE VENT COOLING PLATE ON THE REAR OF THE ROTOR? IF SO, DO YOU REPLACE WITH OEM GEAR LUBE OR WILL A GOOD QUALITY 75/90 GEAR OIL WORK? I NOTICED THE GEAR LUBE COMING OUT BEFORE SEAL REPLACEMENT HAS A BLUEISH TINT TO IT. IS THERE A REASONING BEHIND SUBARUS CHOICE IN GEAR LUBE? QUESTIOIN 3. THERE'S AN O-RING INSIDE OF THE SEAL HOUSING, IS IT NECESSARY TO REPLACE THIS O-RING WHEN CHANGING THE SEAL? Did my axles the other day. As soon as I pulled the axle it dumped out a quart of fluid at least onto my floor. Was very surprised to have this happen. Well I tried to get the old axle back in as quick as I could and I think I ended up damaging the seal. New axles are in and diff was refilled but now I have a slow drip from the diff. Guess I’ll be pulling it again to do seals. Hopefully it doesn’t drain my whole diff again. Never had that happen with any of my other subarus. Never even had a drop. Have you ever experienced this?

Great video topic as I have found owning 3 Subaru's over many years a front axle assembly swap out is a very common thing. Quite a few years ago after some cheap Chinese axles failed way too early my Subaru mechanic advised spending more (aprox $225 instead of $120) for the ones remanufactured by Subaru in Indiana and they seem to last a very long time as long as the boots hang in there. Is this your experience as well ? Thanks

Thank you for this. I need to do the same on my 2011 Forester. I noticed a couple of other similar videos on KZbin show the same job without removing the caliper and rotor, and which also leave the tie rod and stabilizer link attached. Obviously the more space you can create the better ( especially when you are trying to film as well), but in your opinion is it really necessary, or if being careful can the axle and seal replacement be done without all the dismantling you did? Another thing is, should the auto transmission be in neutral or park when removing and replacing the cv axle? Thanks for your help and thanks again for the great videos.

I try to always follow the steps and practices outlined by the Subaru factory service manuals in my repair videos. The Subaru factory service manual says to remove the brake components, remove the outer tie rod from the spindle, etc. I've seen/heard many people say they simply remove the lower ball joint and pull the spindle/strut assembly away from the car. You can go about it anyway you please, but I don't like to put the strut and strut mount under that kind of stress/strain. Also, most balljoints are hard to remove due to rust. That of course depends on the area in which you live. Work is performed with the transmission in park.
@mikequinlan3308
@mikequinlan3308 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrSubaru1387 Thank you for the answer. I had not considered the stress on the strut or its mount even though I confess to being a bit unsure why leaving the extra weight of the rotor and caliper in place would be exessive. Still, I agree with you that there must be a reason why the method you followed is the best practice, so its what I will do as well. I do live in Canada and rust can be an issue. Hopefully it goes smoothly and this way I will take a bit of extra time and service the front brakes as part of the job. Thanks again for letting me know about putting the auto transmission into park for this.

Any reason my CV axle won't pull free from the diff like in the video? Tried a fairly long pry bar and no use. Worth renting a CV pulling fork from the store? It's the same car I am working on. Many thanks in advance

Do you have to change the seal when doing an axle or only if it’s leaking?

Hi, I'm about to replace a front Axle on a subaru forester 2014, did you had to replace the differential oil after this? Did you lose any differential oil during this service?

I want to purchase a shop manual for my 2017 Impreza Premium. Do you recommend a particular online version? I'm coming up on my 60k service and need to do differential services, spark plugs, and brake fluid change. Does 55k seem reasonable for the factory brake pads?

Why remove the sway bar link nut? There is plenty of room for removal and replacement without removing the nut.

Releases tension from the sway bar on the suspension and makes it easier to move control arms/knuckle around as needed.
