And it was. Not because of the story. The story was hacky af. Dances with Wolves/Ferngully IN SPACE. Terrible or at least "fine" movies make bank all the time. The reason the Sonyverse tanked is that most people didn't care enough about Morbius/Kraven/Madam Webb to actually bother going to the movies to see how blah these movies actually were. And why would they? "He's a hunter, I guess? I dunno. Some superhero thing. *shrugs*"

Idk ... maybe a great film could turn things around ... but the opening weekends being so rough suggests a real lack of interest that precedes knowledge of the film's quality. (Or, maybe-MAYBE-not just cinephiles/online people but the general public has knowledge of the Sony cinematic universe's record? ... but I doubt it.) As to quality ... I'm not sure films about true villains-like the truly nefarious and generally competent-can work ... which is why, regardless of studio, all of these sorts of films make their leads nominally antiheroes but really just straight up heroes. (Venom, Black Adam, Kraven ...)

My favorite line in the movie is when the lawyer lady with no personality (who apparently went to a murder summer camp as a child) is talking to Kraven in the Kraven Yurt about her magic grandma and she says “she died a year later, and I never saw her again.” It’s just baffling how no one, from the writers to the director to the actors, thought about that line for even a single second.

The weirdest part of all of this is that the deal that allowed Disney to include Spider-Man in the MCU never actually prevented Sony from putting the character in any of their movies, yet they never did, in their SPIDER-MAN. universe. I think that they want to have a wide cinematic universe, like Marvel, only with Spiderman characters. The issue is that without Spiderman, the villains are the more recognizable characters. So they just make movies with villains like they're heroes, only without the bagage that they have with Spiderman, which strips them of everything that makes them interesting.

I mean ... two live action spider-men co-existing (but one of them never getting a standalone film) would be sorta weird, but more importantly: it'd be hard to fit Spider-Man in these films, since the consistent thing about these films is that the villain's are actually heroes (or "anti-heroes" ... but really usually straight-up heroes). They don't want to make a film where the villain is a true villain. So ... what would Spider-Man be doing?? Being a helping character in each of these films? ... Being an annoying character who tries to stop the lead because of a misunderstanding?

The funniest part of these studios continually failing to replicate what Marvel did is that they're not even trying to do what Marvel did. Marvel carefully set up their movies with interesting but B-team characters. The the time we got an Avengers movie, most of the characters had already been set up. Every other studio just sees the dollar signs and completely misses the work they would need to put into it to actually make it good. It's like the underpants gnome joke from South Park. You can't just go to profit. There has to be something first.

The main problem to me for the Spider-Man “villain” movies that cause them to fail was that they weren’t villains. The made the villains heroes. Kraven shouldn’t been a hero movie should been a villain origin story setting up Last Hunt. The film doesn’t set it up where Kraven would want to kill Spider-Man.

What an insane choice to limit themselves with the necessarily smaller audience but then just make it a generic safe super hero movie (with blood and swearing). The difference between PG-13 and R should be the difference between The Wolverine and Logan. It can have adult themes, because you're writing it for adults, because you're SELLING IT TO ADULTS.

weird idea that i had that sony technically setup, what if they just did the ultimate universe? take the few parts from these movies that worked; the villains. and then use the weird plot point from madame web of peter being born, fast forward 15 years, then boom: you have 2 simultaneous peter parkers that would kinda work. maybe have a live action spider-verse event, idk.

So the beginning was definitely the original Ending scene, and the Pilot was Calypso. The idea was that he is the Hunter now, hunting the people like his father. But after reshoots, it's the beginning scene, making sure we have the Hunter to begin with.

I choose to believe this is a film adaptation of John Kraven’s Newsround. I couldn’t think of a better joke than that. Sorry. They just kept saying Kraven and Boring and my brain got stuck replaying the Newsround theme tune. If you’re under 40 or not from the UK I can assure you this isn’t a cultural reference you need to look up. It’s fine.

I feel like someone at Sony saw the trailers for Thunderbolts* and thought "if Marvel can make a movie pulling villains from different movies to team up, why can't we?". Except Madame Web isn't a villain, just blind. I assume they'd have a character in the trailer like Sentry is to be the teased 6th member, or it would be a post credit scene of like a newspaper article that vaguely references Spider-Man fighting like Big Wheel or some other C tier villain to be the final member in the sequel.
