The release of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace in 1999 was preceded by what is still the biggest movie marketing campaign of all time. Billions of dollars in deals were made between George Lucas and a number of other big brands including Pepsi, Hasbro, Apple, Lego and more covering toys, games, make up, books and comics and a whole lot more. In this video we attempt to break down the ins and outs of the entire deal that really began in 1977. Plus maybe I drink a really old Pepsi. Thanks for watching!

"Its a bit like rust" is one of most halirous things ever said on this channel. Honestly, I did not expect him to actully drink it, it seemed like the kind of thing he would joke about but not actully do. Overall, this was an interesting look at how a brand can be used to absolutely con other companies. Lucas didn't care, he knew Star Wars was massive and just let the others waste money. Debate his storytelling and dialogue, he's a shrewd business man.

Having lived through both, the marketing for Force Awakens was nothing compared to Phantom Menace. Episode I went so hard they had to scale back marketing for future Star Wars films due to too much product. Force Awakens also didn't have nearly as many tie ins regarding restaurants, food, games, novels, comics, toys, cook books, furniture, candy, food, and basically everything you can think of. It was an amazing time to be a Star Wars fan, and the Prequel Era was a Renaissance of Star Wars media. I'm really happy I got to live through that as a kid.

He does a bit on each of the Mission Impossible COGs and they've done some other stuff with some face time. But he's right. He does have a sinister hairline. 😁 It's great that he's not vain and dyes it. It looks healthy. But hairline = Still sinister.

@@LadyAstarionAncunin I read both paragraphs of the original comment-two obviously different topics. My brain amazingly thought the follow up comments were referring to the valid, but arguably less interesting, SECOND paragraph, which makes both your comment and the preceding one quite baffling. In retrospect, the mental gymnastics on my part were quite entertaining. I put it all together when I was in the process of looking up pictures to assess your fascination with *George Lucas’s* hairline. 😃 eta: I agree about the hairline. I’ve seen it before, but not as grey. But alas, age happens to us all (if we’re so lucky). I’m too vain not to dye mine, though! (And as a woman in my 40s, it’s a little less socially acceptable to just let it be whatever it will. But man, hopefully in another decade it will be consistent enough in color to save myself both money and hours sitting in a salon!)

This was absolutely my childhood. I was 5 in May of 1999, and I think my most vivid memories of the marketing campaign were the Taco Bell promotions. They had giveaway knockoff-POGs with character names and details on them and I can remember my mom and I reading them together in the restaurant. There were a few months there where it felt like EVERYTHING was Star Wars-themed, and as a Star Wars kid completely in the target demographic, it was a great time to be alive. Wish I could go back and relive that hype as a kid again, it was amazing. Except they killed off Qui-Gon, and my favorite color was green, so I was pretty upset about that.

@@cruzcamelIt was pretty crazy. I remember Michaels crafts store selling the movie merch on tables in the vestibule. It struck me as odd that they would have novelizations of the movie for sale, Michael's never sold fictional reading back then. I also remember the giant posters of little Anakin casting a Vader shadow, they were everywhere and did a perfect job of hyping the new movie, too good of a job in fact as I always felt like it was one of the greatest cinematic let downs off all time. The only movie I have ever seen that was hyped/marketed to the same degree was the first Jurassic Park, which was also probably the only time that level of hype was fully warranted, JP delivered just as big as it was pumped up beforehand.

I was 7 during the ad campaign for Episode 1 and as a little Star Wars fan cause my dad showed me the original trilogy first and seeing all this Star Wars stuff everywhere, I was all in, I had the figures, lightsaber, even the jedi role playing gear, Toys from Taco Bell, books, and stickers.

I remember regularly watching Total Request Live on MTV (for the BSB vs. ‘N Sync rivalry, natch) and the day when that “Duel of the Fates” music video premiered. We recorded that and I watched it probably every day until the actual movie came out, when my dad couldn’t get him and I midnight screening tickets and instead got tickets for a 4am showing. (I’ve actually watched TPM at 4am ET twice - the second time was 2015 when I watched both the PT and OT Star Wars movies in a row leading up to The Force Awakens’ premiere!)

Holy Cow this was a 22 minute long memory unlock. I was 8-9 and remember being crazy into all of this stuff. I am embaressed how much of this junk I owned. I had nearly all the promo cans chilling in my room for multiple years. I remember waiting 5-10 minutes while my dad downloaded trailer on our ancient internet (can't remember if it was late dial-up or early broadband, we were early adopters). And good stunt! get well soon

I was a child around for the rereleases and the merch exploding was an understatement, to the point where some toys became rare and hard to find. When EP1 came out, I had passed my Star Wars toy phase and wasn’t interested in the new movie, but I still remember how much merch, toys, commercials, collabs, and hype there was, as well as how much of this ended up at the bargain bin.

That was a crazy time. In Melbourne you could not go anywhere with out seeing Darth Maul on a poster or shop anywhere in 1999. I worked at the local Kmart back then and they could not keep up with the demand for the books and toys and shirts and stuff for months. Hats off to lucasfilm, they did an amazing job keeping the brand going through the 90's and building up the hype for years. LOLs they even had one of those special phone numbers you could call and C3P0 would read out a message lasting a couple pf minutes about the phantom menace and my brother called it 3 or 4 times, i only remember that because it cost about 20 Aussie dollars for each call and my mum cracked it when she got the phone bill. Good Times!

11:00 FUN FACT: That pinball machine was the nail in the coffin for Bally/Williams and the last pin they ever released before going out of business shortly thereafter. Pinball and arcades overall were on a huge decline at the time (every other kid had A console if not mulit generations by 1999). But it was a really novel idea. Look up Pinball 2000. They put a dang CRT monitor inside the thing. It was bonkers. I got to play one of 'em and as an experienced pinball player, it was bizarre to say the least but super cool.

I remember walking around our neighborhood on recycling day picking through the bins until we managed to collect every can with every character. We weren't big soda drinkers in my family, but I had to have those cans so I could learn who all these characters were. I remember being puzzled by the fact that Queen Amidala was described as the future mother of Luke and Leia, but when we started to watch the movie this handmaiden named Padmé seemed to be getting more screentime with Anakin. That third act reveal shocked me as a 12-year-old. No spoilers for this 23-year-old movie, but some of the actors play more than one character, and sometimes that turns out to be because both characters are in fact the same character. And if that surprises you now, just wait until the reveal in Episode 3!

I really appreciate this video. Being born in '92, I remember the hype full well. It seemed like The Phantom Menace was everywhere. Now this video proves it was! Although I can admit the film isn't that great, having lived through the hype and seeing it in the cinema, I cant help but have a strong nostalgic connection to it. So much so that I actually really like it. You forgot to mention the Japanese Laserdisc release which was easily the best way to watch the film at home before the dvd was released. Its the original theatrical cut in widescreen with the 6.1 Dolby EX sound mix. There were so many orders from outside Japan that Pioneer had to do two additional pressing runs.

It's interesting that people talk about Star Wars merch as though such a thing had never been done before, but there was Buck Rogers merch being produced as early as 1935! In the 1950s, product tie-ins for Buck Rogers, Space Patrol, etc, were very popular. And people of a certain age in Britain will remember the ubiquitous cash-in products produced for Doctor Who, as well as all the Gerry Anderson series (most famously Thunderbirds, but going back at least to his 1961 series Supercar).

As a huge fan of both Legos and Star Wars, I’m so glad lego was struggling financially enough to accept the Star Wars brand, weird as it sounds. Also fun fact: originally the founder didn’t want to produce grey bricks because he was worried people would build tanks…they had green and tan (yellow) tanks in the 40s didn’t they?

I remember this. I went to see this movie in 1999 with my best friend Mark Steingraber in theaters. We had to sit in the very large theater, in the FRONT ROW because there were no seats available (this was back in the day when you couldn't reserve a seat, it was first come first server. We showed up pretty early, and still barely got two seats in the front for this showing, that is how big of a deal this film was. I still remember seeing the Pod Racing segment on the big screen and being amazed.)

This has been an endlessly fascinating trilogy of videos about the hunting strategies of the avaricious, money-eating corporate egregore that is Star Wars. Truly Mr Sunday has spent hours deep in the tundra of capitalism, tracking the beast by sniffing its Lego dung. My favourite remains the Shadow of the Empire video, because that's the most legitimately baffling to me, a truly menacing phantom where a range of promo products promote nothing. Incredible. We have been slaves to this monster our whole lives and our and our parents' money have fattened it until it could birth its tainted, monstrous young... Baby Yoda.

A portion of licensing was done by a third-party company that had promised Lucas a minimum of $300 million in TPM-related royalties if they were put in charge of any licensing deals not separately made by Lucasfilm (Hasbro, Lego, etc). It became very clear a few weeks after the film's release that they were going to be well-short of their goal and ended up having to hand over the vast majority of their profits just to make 200 of the 300 million dollar deal. Obviously the offer was not renewed for AotC, forcing Lucasfilm to do a lot of the work in-house once again. Licensing for AotC was less-junky than TPM; it was clear that the market for padawan hair-braids was not as big as originally expected.

I remember being 4 years old and going to the single grocery store in the small town that I grew up in, the first day that they received the card board Pepsi and Mountain Dew cut outs of Obi-Wan and Maul; the life size R2D2 soda cooler was wheeled in shortly after. My grandparents had bought me the 1997 VHS rereleases of the original trilogy and I watched at least one a day until the release of Phantom. Those Pepsi cutouts stood on top of the last freezer isle's chillers until who knows when, but when I visited that small town a few months ago for the first time in a long time, I saw that they had been taken down. It bummed me out a tad because I think that memory at 4 years old might be my first memory of feeling joy. TPM will always be my favorite Star Wars for this reason...right behind Empire of course.
