So if you arent part of the conflict but trades with one of the sides, should you just stop the trade when war begins because its it looks unfair to people after the fact 70years later? Its alot more complicated than that im afraid. You are neutral because you dont condone the war but you continue to trade because you rely on it for your own population.

@@bbb7452 it isn't really just common trade, it's weapons and supplies going to one side, so you are clearly supporting one side over the other. That's where this question comes into play. @YuYuYuna_5 жыл бұрын
@B BB You're referring to general, non-militaristic trade. That is an entirely different trade topic. You can certainly argue that food and other supplies are just as important but they just simply are not. You can have all the food you like, if you are technologically and numerically out gunned then it does not matter how strong your food supply is, you simply won't win. That is the very frank reality of militaristic trade and is why the trading of military goods during war is highly controversial.

I disagree, I think even if Moscow fell the south was more important due to oil. If I'm being honest, Barbarossa didn't fail because of the winter, they lost because of a lack of supplies and oil. Stalin was never going to surrender to Hitler until all of the Soviet union was conquered.
@nathanstanislawsky17665 жыл бұрын
I agree, people seam to forget that the german losses during the first winter against the soviets is because germany did not supply its troops with the proper equipment sins they believed that they would win by the time winter came. This is false on the most part, the Russian infrastructure was centered around moscow and the major cities of the SSRs. This was problematic to the german because this led to supply troubles and logistical bottlenecks that slowed down the speed which winter equipment was supplied to the troops. With that, the lack of fuel was the reason why germany invaded the USSR at 1941, because they estimated that after that time they would not have enough fuel to conquer the USSR, this combined with the german estimations of when the german and soviet armies would be equal in strength led to when germany invaded. I also think that the USSR would not surrender after moscow, sins most of it's factories when transferred to the urals, but I think it would be easier on the germans to continue in the central front sins it would help with its supply problems. The soviets still had the available manpower left and the factories to make a new army or a few. In defense of the russians, the winter would still prove harsh to the germans. I say this because their mobility was cut and they armored and air support tended to be useless to non-existent when fuel froze. With that the russians did have more experience when it came to dealing with the russian winters. srry just had to get it off my chest.
@taylorford16895 жыл бұрын
But, while German's oil situtation was bad, gaining Moscow would mean that they would be able to deny Soviets what was basically their major transportation hub. The communication between different lines would've been way harder. The only problem with that is overextending and the chance of a Russian counter-attack after heavy losses, which would've turned badly for the Germans. As for the Caucaus, i do not think the Germans could've seized the region. You have to both defend against the troops from Stalingrad and make a push through a terrain where the defenders would have the advantage. Accomplishing both isn't an easy task and you have, again, a risk of a Soviet attack and even maybe a massive encirclement in the Caucaus if the Soviets manage to cut the frontline in half. This would've been a disaster.

Hello Mr Terry! I'm a teaching student in history in Sweden and I want to throw in a small correction about Stalingrad. Taking Moscow would not necessarily have meant a German victory against the Soviets, that's a notion that was put forth by German generals after the war. By your own comparison, in Napoleons invasion of Russia he did in fact take Moscow and still lost the war. The push south towards Stalingrad was not just about a propaganda victory by taking Stalin's city but also to push past them and take the Baku oil fields. In fact during the planning of the invasion of the Soviet Union a key point from the start was that they needed to take Soviet oil since the German Wehrmacht was running out of gasoline which it needed to continue the war effort
@callido5925 жыл бұрын
People however forget, that most of the Soviet population lived in Western Russia. And allthough the factories had been moved behind the Ural mountains, the people hadn't. A capture of Moscow (the last big stronghold of western Russia) would have not only been very demoralizing for the Soviets, but would have also stripped them of their huge manpower regenerating capability. If that would have been the case, the Red Army would have slowly worn out, as their huge number of casualties (which was usual for the Soviets in WW2) could not be made up for, because most possible recruits would have been locaated in the occupied part of the USSR.
@callido5925 жыл бұрын

Do not forget that in 1812 Moscow wasn't a capital city. But it was in 1945. It doesn't change everything but it is a rather important thing.
@mihairobescu9345 жыл бұрын
there's more things than that. The Baku oil fields could have been already captured, but they went to conquer mount Elbrus. Anyway the Baku oil fields could have been in fact taken without Stalingrad as it also says in the video, that there were 2 separate armies. Indeed, maybe Stalingrad was mostly ideologically and fueled the prides and so on, but it also meant that who controlled Stalingrad controlled Volga which was an important supply line for the Russians. I am also saying that it was mostly ideologically, as the Germans arrived at the Volga on the outskirts on Stalingrad and there was no need to fight that fierce battle. However, the most important part was that the attack on Moscow was postponed and maybe should have focused on just one of the cities well enough. Whereas Stalingrad was not of utter importance, the Volga was.

Fun fact: the average age for Allied troops in that War was 18. Second Fun Fact: The bulk of German troops on the Western Front were Volksgrenadiers (ages 50+ or 16-) or conscripts from occupied territory. Normandy's beaches were landed on by teenagers, who were shot at by teenagers. The few adults that were there didn't want to be. Side note: My grandfather was a Sergeant in WW2. He was 28. They did have oil. They bought oil from the ussr because of the molotov - ribbentrop pact
@Dingdongsx35 жыл бұрын
@@ichigo2288 That's true, but the oil from the ussr was by far not enough. One main reason of the 4th Panzer Army going south early was that they didn't even had enough oil left to get through the battle of Stalingrad. Even before the invasion of the ussr they barley had enough oil for the military. Because of that Warships were not fully tanked, they didn't rebuild the Luftwaffe completely after the Battle of London and they started to build fewer but bigger tanks. I'm not saying that Japan had no resource problems, but Germany was in a greater struggle for oil.

@@Dingdongsx3 In my opinion (and im not saying i'm mad that germany lost) germany should have focused more om africa. If they had won and took over east africa they could have taken the oil from iraq , the british oilfield in iran and take over a new born and weak saodi arabia.
@Dingdongsx35 жыл бұрын
@@ichigo2288 Well everything is better as an invasion of the ussr. You can always argue about better decisions, but hitler wanted to attack the ussr for several reasons. One was the nazi ideology itself (livingspace, communism, etc.). Looking at the entire situation they (luckly) never had a real chance of winning the war with their plan. The shortages in oil, the loss of air dominance and the bombing of germany made it completely hopeless.

Well the main reasons the Allies didn't do it wasn't because it was a dumb idea (Whether it actually was or not), but because the cost was HUUUGE, plus by the time they were in a position to start thinking about constructing it, they had already begun making advances in taking territory that made it redundant. Also the advances on the nuclear bomb projects were much more close to fruition by that point.

It should be mentioned that German soldiers were, in fact, issued winter clothing and gear. Their real problem lied in several different factors: 1. A lack of supplies. Hitler had not expected the invasion of Russia to take as long as it did, and so the Wermacht was left under supplied by the time they reached Moscow. This is compounded by the fact that Germany is suffering an oil shortage, making it difficult to move vehicles through the miles of Siberian wilderness necessary to supply and reinforce troops on the ground. Hitler had planned to alleviate this by securing oil fields in the Caucuses, which ultimately he failed at. 2. The Russian winter that year was one of the coldest and harshest on record. The Germans weren't stupid (incompetent on a leadership level, perhaps, but not dumb), they knew from history that Russia's weather would make or break their invasion. They invested considerable resources into weather research. Ultimately, for a number of reasons, this ended up proving fruitless in the end. By the time winter hit, it was far too late for anything to be done to improve the Wermacht's situation. 3. As mentioned in the video, Russian troops were far more equiped for winter combat than the Germans ever could be, by the sheer virtue of experience. Now, I'm no expert, this is just based on what I know and understand to be the case. I'm sure there's points I've missed and/or misconstrued, and that I will be corrected in the comments. In any case, however the situation was much more nuanced and complicated than simply "hurr de durr, the Germans forgot to bring their coats, look how stupid that was!". Not to say anyone was arguing that in the video, but some historical perspective is often lost in translation. Complicated issues get boiled down to simple, yet inaccurate ones.

To be fair the channel he reacted to is oversimplified, they hit on all the broad details and leave out the test answers
@the_real_Kurt_Yarish5 жыл бұрын
@@mcr2dcr348 I get that that's the point of the channel, and that's fine and all. But I think the nuances of history get so commonly lost that people start to develop an inaccurate vision of it. There was a good opportunity to change that in this video that was missed out on. History is so much more complex and interesting than the common education and social zeitgeist let on. None the less, I think both channels featured in this video did great with what they were trying to accomplish.

25:55 This is when the military leaders of Japan decided to send one of their remaining ships of the Imperial Navy on a dangerous suicide mission to Okinawa in hoping to stop the US from invading Okinawa. One of those ships is none other than the battleship called the Yamato. Japan's largest warship ever built in history. So Japan initiated a naval operation called Ten Go (meaning Heaven One) on 7th April 1945. This consists of ten warships, the battleship Yamato, a light cruiser and eight destroyer escorts. At the same time US Naval Fleet launched a wave of aircrafts to stop the Yamato. As the battle starts Yamato fought hard till the very end and after wave after wave of aircraft bombing the ship capsizes and exploded into two pieces and around over 2000 sailors' lives were lost during the Yamato's Final Voyage. This symbolizes the defeat of the Imperial Navy and representing the old Japan.

15:00 an important thing to consider is that the attack on Pearl Harbor could've been much more effective had the US' aircraft carriers had been taken out. Their 3 Pacific fleet aircraft carriers were one of the primary targets of the attack but they were coincidentally not at Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack. If they had been there and been decimated, a lot could've changed in the Pacific theatre.
