Getting there, the interior is a pain compared to the mechanical bits unfortunately especially re-covering the dash. The gearbox has three inputs, the manifold vacuum that determines how hard or soft the shift is, the kickdown switch which tells it to drop a gear whe it makes sense to do so, and the Bowden cable which is the 3rd cable you found. This changes the road speed at which gear changes happen. I spent a bit of time pulling the cruise actuator apart when mine failed. The bottom is a vacuum plenum, if it’s rusted off then it’s junk and source another.

Ah good info Gary, thanks :) mine actually changes fairly appropriately- press on and it changes later, cruise along and it changes early. I tested the kickdown switch and I can hear a solenoid click on the gearbox: so that’s good. Just not sure why it doesn’t change down - I’ll investigate more. Interior - yes I’m expecting it to be tricky…..

listening to the engine, you can hear an awful lot of air rushing through, sounds daft but are all the intake hoses attached? that'll definitely affect the mixture !

Yes I thought the same! I found the 16 clamps at the top of the intake runners loose (before this video) but suspect others might be letting air in. I’m thinking of pressurising the system to check for leaks

Another problem resolved. Keep ticking them off, you'll get to the end eventually!

Indeed! car drives soooo much better now. Turn key and she starts and ticks out beautifully. :)

What thickness oil are you running? Ticking sound could be a lifter or injector, hard to tell. Both my 928s have a ticking injector sound. If it’s more mechanical probably a lifter. Thicker oil is a must in these engines, min 20w-50. I run 25w-60 racing oil in my 218k mile S4 and it quietens down nicely. Oils, it’s Pandora’s box!

Sorry was trying to find the invoice but can’t. It’s was pretty thick stuff, but I promised myself I would change it after 500 miles, so I can make sure what goes it then.

Zddp level of 1200 ppm is very important in these engines

It's K-jet no ticking injectors possible. The only noise the injectors can make is to "sing" they just atomise the fuel they don't control the amount the fuel distributor does.

This will sound daft but could your clunking noise be something like a wheel balance weight clipping a brake caliper? I had this as an issue on a S2. When the car was off the ground the wheels spun fine with no sound which made me think it was further in.

It’s a good idea - this noise is more something twanging or bouncing. I can hear it oscillating and decreasing in volume each time. I have a feeling it’s the gearbox mounts …

@@MrToddgibbs Apologies if you've also checked this, I've not watched all the videos yet, but I also had a twangy bouncy sound on another occasion from the same area that turned out to be the spring from the parking brake had become loose.

Hmmm, Ive not checked that - where is it located? at the handle or in the hub?

@@MrToddgibbs The parking brake shoe and springs etc are behind the rear disc. Sorry, thought I replied to this 3 weeks ago and just realised I hadn't.

@@IshRamjan no problem- checked and it’s not that. I think it’s the rear damper, which is now removed and on my bench :)
The 928 S4 is the LAST CHEAP classic Porsche worth buying
