25 years ago, I listened to this album in my dimly lit bedroom, with a beautiful girl. We were like 15 or so, and she opened up to me, about her life and feelings, and it was such a magical teenage experience. This took me back to that first time I felt like I connected with someone emotionally. After she went home, I buried my face in the pillow she had rested her head on, and fell asleep, all warm and fuzzy inside :')

4:55 The last verse of this song is so powerful to me. My parents never had an issue that I could see as a child, but my kids' mom has had her share of alcohol and drug problems. I can just imagine a future partner/wife who was able to drink responsibly and had a bottle of something in the fridge. Would my kids feel the same thing in that moment that Rivers felt? Would they think that their step mother would be on the path their mother was on just because of one drink? If they did, would they feel the same amount of anger and betrayal that Rivers felt at that moment? Part of that makes me feel like if I find a future partner to join me on this crazy journey, that she would possibly need to 100% abstain from alcohol. And where I'm from, that limits my options greatly. Edit: in case you didn't catch the meaning of the song, Rivers's dad had some bad drinking problems that lead to their divorce. Rivers didn't see or hear from him until years later. His mom remarried to someone who didn't have a drinking problem and treated his mother well. But one night he found a bottle of booze in the fridge and instantly felt that flood of emotions and feared his step-father would be just like his dad. If I recall, this wasn't a large issue long term, but he recalled in that moment feeling all of that pain. That final verse: "To daddy, I write you, in spite of years of silence. You cleaned up, found Jesus, things are good, oh so I hear. This bottle of Stephens awakens ancient feelings: like father, step-father, the son is drowning in the flood."

I recommend listening to the entire Blue album in one go. It's really meant to be listened to like that imo. I'd love to see you do a reaction to Only in Dreams as well. It's a long song and the ending is long build up, but the album version is so worth the payoff. I still think there are few if any build ups in any recording better than the end of that recording of it. Smoke a blunt, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.
