Not only as a Colombian myself, but also as a Medellín-born and raised citizen, I apologize for this embarrasing scam of a company, Arun. Pablo Escobar caused great suffering to my home city, and it's sad to see that almost 30 years after his passing, he's still making us look this bad. I wish companies like D-Brand or Rhinoshield would create coffee or orchid (National flower) themed skins/phone cases to show the world that Medellín and Colombia are more than just Pablo Escobar's cursed legacy. You're supposed to verify the balance from the number to the side. It says above the scratch-off that that's only for retrieving the funds. You COULD technically do a hybrid note thing if you made the "money" some sort of storage medium. So a really thin card filled with E-ink capsules for example. Then you could put it into a magnetic writer and update the unpowered E-ink display to hold a QR code with it's own value that you could then hand to someone to give them the money. This particular example obviously has it's own set of issues but I'm just addressing the possibility for doing something like this in a way that works. So there would be no 5 pound notes, 10 dollar bills, etc only "credit-cards", not as they are now, but rather as in cards which digitally store some number of non-physical "credits" in a digital medium. You get the privacy and on the fly use of cash with the security and inflation prevention of crypto. Definitely not a drop in alternative but I could see something like that working in some cyberpunk hypothetical future. Keep a stack of charged cards in your wallet, hand them to people at stores to pay for whatever you want, the cashier takes the card, takes the value off of it, re-adds the remaining value and hands you the card back. It's definitely a weird bodge but if you want a lot of the security and decentralization of crypto but value the tech-less payment of cash carrying around a few cheap cards that you can hand to people to pay for things does fulfill those demands. Of course this is all just a way of doing 2 things, 1 mandating payment privacy (fuck your taxes, try tracing me handing a 5 dollar bill to someone 17 years ago to buy a coffee, essentially) and 2 removing tech from the equation. (fuck you I don't want to carry my phone with me 24/7, basically) Of course #2 is only relevant as a reason to not switch to bankwires, paypal, etc but those also fail #1. A more honest version of this would be a bit more distinct from our current reality and fail #2 but have it's own simplicity benefits. That would be to design phones or SOME virtual but physical wallet that you can plug into a dock to make payments. Then you could still maintain payment privacy, but it wouldn't be mandated by the spec. A government could still come in and require that sort of thing be logged since each individual wallet would need to have some identifier. In an ideal world that wouldn't happen, but, well, as we've seen over the past few years, governments don't exactly say no to more power. So while you could completely ditch the cash aspect and still THEORETICALLY maintain it's benefits, in reality such systems allow for enforceable de-anonymization. If you want privacy, rights, etc that has to be built into the very foundation of your ideas and unfortunately governments really don't like anything in the same galactic area code as those words so a hybrid currency does have value that, unfortunately, isn't replicatable by extremely different means. Whether you believe that value is significant or not is entirely up to you and another discussion but I'm simply saying there IS value there and it CAN theoretically be done in a manner which would function practically. TLDR : a "hybrid" currency could theoretically exist and, I at least, would be really interested in seeing one try to be made genuinely.
