I am still really happy with my K5000R that I got quite affordably some 5 or so years ago. Put a white-on-black LCD on it, resoldered the outputs because they were shorting out, added the memory expansion - and it's stellar!

Wow, I've done the exact same mods with mine just a few months back! 😎👍 Got the memory expansion with the K5000R win off eBay, but bought separately soon after by luck, the seemingly rare Macro Controller desktop box - so I have full K 'set' now!! A keeper for sure, nothing else I have in my studio sounds like this beauty, for ambient, unearthly esoteric soundscapes ...... 🎹🎶🍻

This synth was SO much ahead of it's time. I owned all of them (R, S, W), one at the time. I sold them and been regretting it since - especially now when I listen sounds they use in EDM. I have never, ever ever ever seen Resonance going SO beyond all sensibility than in this synth. It felt too much back then - as everything is nowadays mixed so in-your-face and bright, K5000 -series would fit perfectly in modern electronic music.

I remember looking at a Brochure and seeing the K5000X. I've never seen one on the second hand market and the synth archivists web sites don't mention it. Do you know of it?

The K5000X was meant to have the performance knobs/arpegiator of the K5000S AND the extra PCM sounds and sequencer of the K5000W in one unit. They got as far as preparing ads for it, which is probably what you saw. Kawai however decided to pull the plug on the K5000 series before it went into production.
