To be fair the Zeon base in his location where he is deployed has plenty of gouf's varying from the regular to the flight types you can see in one of the episodes inside a mountain base and there were just a row of gouf's, so yeah he and probably most of the feddies at the time would have encountered a gouf, it is a popular unit next to the zaku, dom, and gelgoog

Gouf is a good middleman between being an op ms or superweapon (Zeong, Big Zam, Apsaras, Sazabi) while still being more threatening and capable than your average Zaku II

This OVA is hilarious because I feel like it existed to showcase previously unshown capabilities of the Ez8. For example, people used to speculate that it's beam saber didn't have a high output, since it was fairly small in the show, so in this OVA there's the iconic scene of Shiro using the beam saber at fullpower in the water, and using the thrusters and shield properly, very cool.

the ez8 was made from spare parts just enough to create a makeshift mobile suit so it would make sense that it would have an unstable beam saber since the mobile suit itself is unstable, what doesn't make sense in this ova is that somehow the camera for this version is wider when in the og anime it had very limited vision because it only had 3 small monitors for front, left, and right vision but this version has a top view as well much like the regular ground gundams

There's a lot of people asking and some have gotten replies but still not really anyone just openly saying it: This is a special included with the BD release back in 2013 called "A Battle with the Third Dimension" or also "Battle in Three Dimensions" and was essentially a fan service ep to showcase the Ez8 and the Gouf Flight Type, the latter of which had only ever been seen when it made a brief appearance at the end of the original OVA escorting the Apsalus III during the final encounter of the series. It was Zeon's most successful, albeit last attempt at a flight capable mobile suit before the end of the war and was limited to only a handful being produced.

​@@t.gchannel4067 as carey stated. Heat weapons are fairly effective at cleaving through mobile suits. The only real issue with them besides their... eventual durability issues. Is the fact that they take a fair bit of time to heat up. The bigger the weapon, the longer this takes. The goufs heatsword is essentially an express train sized sword so yeah. Half a minute to optimum cleaving temp.

​@keth templar Actually, it wouldn't have mattered. All RX-79(G) Gundam Ground Types, including the EZ8, were made from spare parts for the original RX-78-2 Gundam. As a result, the armor is made from Luna Titanium, not the titanium/ceramic composite the GMs were made from. Even at full temp, the Heat Saber wouldn't have cut through in time. Besides, with the momentum of the EZ8, the Beam Saber would have plowed through anyway.

The 8th MS team had no super weapons, no genetic powers, no unbeatable MS they fought like hell to keep themselves and each other alive in that war. The 8th MS team vs Gouf Custom fight is still one of the best fights in Gundam history.

0:29 Maybe the Ez8 can't go into Super Mode like the God Gundam, spam beams like the Strike Freedom, nor generate giant beam sabers like the 00 Raiser, but if you see it looking at you like this, you fucking run. Also, just to respond to some of the comments I've seen: 1) His un-heated saber wouldn't be able to stab through the Ez8's chest. Swords like that are designed to slice, not stab. Kinda like how fencers use rapiers instead of machetes. 1.1) The beam saber is a different story because it can cut anywhere. The entire thing is just pure heat, after all. Yes, unfortuantely, superior beam weaponry (unless you have an I-Field). 1.2) He couldn't even build enough momentum in his swing to slice through the Ez8's arm given how fast Shiro approached him, so all the more slicing through through the chest. 1.2.1) Plus I think he meant to alter Shiro's flight instead of actually take him down with that. 2) 0:26 shows that his turbines, exposed to water, would no longer function at their fullest, removing any possibility of high-speed evasion. 3) The ACE title may have only been granted to scoring a certain number of kills, and not exactly a sign of extreme skill, as I've noticed with some other Gundam titles. In 0080, Bernie said he was "1 kill away from being an ACE" which is why I assumed that being an ACE just means X-kill streak, and not superhuman piloting abilities. 3.1) Char, for example, earned the title of "Red Comet" during the Battle of Loum where he took several warships down on his own,and is undoubtedly an ACE Zeon pilot, but don't forget the fact that the Federation wasn't fully prepared for mobile suit warfare at the time. He had a really hard time against the civilian-boarded White Base, after all. 3.1.1) I'm not saying Char's a noob unworthy of his title and praise, but instead that titles given often mean very little, and the background of when they earned said title is important. It's like being good and earning a reputation in a game, but then this huge patch changed everything and now you suck. 3.1.2) Yes, I know it was the almighty Gundam he was fighting, but the Ez8 is a Gundam as well. Which one is better, though, I can't say. 3.2) Again using Char as an example, he wasn't really able to defeat the Gundam until he got the Zeong (not to mention the Gundam was already engaged in combat some time before it encountered the Zeong). But if you look at Bernie from 0080 who admitted he wasn't officially an ACE yet, he managed to devastate the Alex, an improved Gundam, with a standard issue Zaku II FZ that he also repaired without the help of the Zeon army. 3.2.1) You can say that Bernie set traps beforehand, but I can say that Char had back-up and often outnumbered the Gundam (and IIRC there were instances where Char led Amuro into a trap as well). 3.2.2) You can say Chris wasn't a good pilot, but neither was Amuro when he first encountered Char (it was Bernie and Chris' first and only mobile suit fight as well, not to mention Chris was officially a soldier, while Amuro a civilian). Hopefully, I've somewhat justified the way the events happened as well as pre-emptively addressed any rebuttals, and defended what little dignity the Gouf's pilot had. It's also kinda his fault for overly relying on his strategy, and not consider what to do should the enemy counter it. Also, just to make it clear, I'm not criticizing Char because I hate him or something. He's one of my favorite UC characters, after all. He's just a really good example to use in this case.

That's an unfair comparison. Ground Types and Ez8 are (albeit limited) MP models. 00 Raiser, Strike Freedom, and God Gundam are Super Prototype with massive power level, and their gameplays are completely different; SF is a beam spam-happy v Gundam Expy, 00 Raiser is an array of clusterfuck fast paced hack and slash, and God Gundam is a mecha equivalent of a martial artist. Ground types and Ez8 is as effective as your standard but powered up mass production models, with Ez8 being more practical in terms of efficiency and performance. All of them (i dunno about Strike Freedom tho, consider the pilot himself...) requires high skill prestige, deep understanding of discipline purpose and spirit, and also complex support and planning to utilize their top potential.
