Guess what: same here, they were shareware. But then I found out that somehow, through quite obscure means, it was still possible to purchase the full games! So I have played all episodes now.

This was probably the year I was introduced to PC gaming as well, we must be around the same age I've always figured, 31 for me. I remember in 90 or 91 my mom's awesome boyfriend at the time (who she made the mistake of not marrying) was the one who always convinced my mom or talked her into them buying a PC and all the latest game consoles, and we had A LOT of consoles and games for PC. Leisure Suit Larry 1 the VGA remake was one game we owned I remember watching him play but certain parts I had to leave the room for lol, also Wolfenstein 3d of course.. many other games.

I just came across this channel because of my love for the old DOS games. I've played a lot of the games you posted here but I would like to mention a few more that were some of my favorites. Jazz the Jackrabbit, Jill of the Jungle, Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, Llamatron, and don't forget about Full Throttle, Under A Killing Moon, Rex Nebular and Dark Seed. I am now setting up a new (OLD) system, and will be revisiting these old DOS games again.

@@sassymenses yes but can you talk about 32-bit era in 1985 when i386 was introduced. Motorola 68000 also had a 32-bit instruction set, but can you also tell it was a fully 32-bit processor belonging to 32-bit era? For me there are three main eras: 8-bit (early home computers), 16-bit (amiga, atari st, pc dos) and 32-bit (windows era). I know I am simplifying here...
@sassymenses
@sassymenses 2 жыл бұрын
@@spearPYN ok I got your point clearly. But still I definitely see a straight separation between "classic" 16-bit DOS games and 32-bit DOS/4GW / CWSDPMI games. Dont forget that there were a lot of games for DOS after Win95 release, meant to be executed under Win95 DOS-Box (just cuz DirectX aka GameSDK was not so popular/trustworthy). F.e. MDK. DOS MDK doesn't really look like a typical 16-bit game, does it?..

Less graphical fidelity leaves more to the imagination. And our mind can sometimes do a better job than an artist. Not to mention that some things look less interesting the more detail you give them. Like the monsters in DOOM vs DOOM 2016.

@Miler97487
@Miler97487 Жыл бұрын
Street Rod 2 uses EGA graphics and Monuments of Mars has the even more outdated CGA. Most games were now using VGA in '91 since by then VGA was now standard and mainstream. At this point most games using older graphics formats in 1991 were companies on a low budget or those experimenting with Adaptive Tile Refresh such as Id Software, in the case of the Commander Keen series and Duke Nukem, a trick not available on VGA, meaning that company continued using EGA as late as 1993 with Dangerous Dave's Risky Rescue. I'm not entirely clear why Monuments of Mars is CGA but apparently you can't run the game on a 5150. Crosscountry Canada is also from 1991 and uses CGA but to be fair it was originally ported on the Apple II in 1986 and they didn't bother to update the graphics when ported on the PC five years later so the graphics weren't much better than the Apple II original.

Very interesting era of PC gaming. You can see some of the games are in EGA and some are in VGA. Some artists clearly had no idea what to do with the extra colors. If you are wondering what the risk was going for the VGA, it is like having an exclusive game for the new generation of "gaming system" except the market was only 1% what it is today.

Cho Jin I never had any intention of going till 1999, as the last big year for commercial DOS releases was 1997, and who knows, one day I might get there. As it currently stands, I just don't have a technical capability to capture many resource demanding games that came out in 96-97. I have struggled even with the 1995 video, which is why some of the games were presented in VGA instead of SVGA. So until I get better machines, I choose to go backwards instead. How far down will I go? I don't really know. But there's certainly enough games out there to keep me busy for years.

Space Quest IV was about the coolest thing on a PC back then. And I didn't even care much for adventure games. Awesome graphics and full of laughs. Out of this World was just incredible. Probably the most memorable PC platformer along with Prince of Persia. VGA really got me into PC gaming and it only got better with MechWarrior, Jedi Knight, and Baldurs Gate. The 90's were the best years of PC gaming. I could care less about all this manufacturered crap we have now like GTA, Minecraft, Assassin's Creed, etc.
