@@maximumhate666 My dad bought my mom a 286 12 MHz in 1988. At the time, it seemed like such a frivolous purchase. Then my brother borrowed Ultima 4 from his high school buddy, and we played it for hours and hours. I quickly realized that it was the best purchase my father ever made!

Exactly. Old games were mostly unique from each other with the engines and graphics styles. When games started chasing photorealism all the magic was gone. Most of the modern games even share the same controls and back then every game was a supprise with different hud, mechanics and stuff. Today only indie games are unique like classics we love. That's why most of my games on Steam are retro inspired indie games that explore what can be done with modern PCs capabilities using retro stylistics and mechanics.

@@mattx5499 That's true about the controls. Did you ever play Ultima IV? Nearly every key on the keyboard was assigned a specific action. It was as clunky as hell, but the game was still as fun as f*ck!

DOS Nostalgia That was beautiful. I had an adlib card on my first PC but not the Gold version. First time I've heard anything from the gold, and I have to say, that sounds way better than any soundblaster card I've heard.

Beautiful. I remember playing at least a good 60 percent of these. Amongst my favourites: Dune, Alone in the Dark, Fate of Atlantis, Quest for Glory (the third was a masterpiece!) and Legend of Kyrandia (not as good, but still has a place in my heart). And all with a 486dx-2 66... with the infamous TURBO button :D

Martijn van Zanen Oh yeah. I remember hearing a lot of envious remarks over my BBS being one of the first in my area to have a CD-ROM drive w/ one of those shareware discs. Then a few months later I had plenty to be envious about myself when my 486/SX 25mhz was crushed by the DX2 66mhz and faster. Unless you were rich, you couldn't stay ahead of the curve for long in those days.

Adam Olympia I remember deciding to go for the p75 or the dx4 133 mhz. Glad I went for the intel p75 with Edo ram. It sure was fast for its time ( I clocked it even on 90 mhz haha) It came with no sound card and no cdrom drive. Installing win 95 on floppy ( took forever lol) My first pc was a sx 386 25 mhz with 1 mb. And ofcourse a monochrome monitor. Good days:)

Glad you included ultima VII on this list, seems to be overlooked WAAAAY too often on lists like these. In my opinion it may be the most immersive RPG ever created, and the lengths they went to in detail and craft are still amazing today.

Also glad Underworld was on here as well, definite the landmark game as far as 3d games are concerned, with real 3d models and an actual ability to create slopes, multi layered levels, and and thin platforms, in addition to being able to look up and down. The game wouldn't be really matched till system shock came out, and not by another company until quake years later

michael norris it was my introduction to ultima, and I think it was the best one, except it was really easy to ignore the path the game expected you to take if you discovered the flying carpet early, as I did. xD but I like it when games can be played any way you like.

I was playing a few Apple/PC games around 92 (mainly Apple 1 or 2 and later Macintosh), I was too young to remember all of them, but their must have been a lot of point and click games at that time. The only game I liked in the video was the Wolfenstien 3D game, I remember playing that game and Doom for the first time in 1999 or 2000 after getting some new shareware/demo games for my new Pentium 3 computer, I was very excited to play the games, even though I played Quake about a year or two before, I don't think my father knew what kind of game he bought his kids back then, me and my brother were puzzled and scared as we played Quake for the first time because my father didn't buy games like that for us so we thought we would get in trouble for playing this kind of game so for 2 weeks we didn't play it until my father ask us why weren't we playing the new game he got us. By the time he realized what he had purchased, it was to late to return it and I was half way through the game.

A lot of games here I remember but never got to play, a few I've never seen 'til now and then of course the beloved games here ... the games I actually played. Some of my favorites here include ALONE IN THE DARK, ULTIMA UNDERWORLD and perhaps the most epic game of all time, WIZARDRY: CRUSADERS OF THE DARK SAVANT ... my god what a glorious game (and I actually finished it and yes it took freakin' forever and ever). This compilation was awesomely edited. Thank you for putting this together, DOS Nostalgia It took me over 20 years, but I noticed that all the soundtracks have the same kind of feel to them with the soundblaster midi setup. I wonder A. if that's why I like just about all the soundtracks from the time and B. if it sounds annoying to new-gen gamers who are exposed to many different sound palates and composers. LucasArts; Sam and Max: Hit the Road, Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle...are you freaking kidding me? Straight up EPIC soundtracks. Jeremy Soule might be the only contemporary VG composer I follow to date.

Note Ultima underworld, Wolfenstein 3D and Ultima VII in particular. That was the trifecta of games that really beat the amiga, showed that the PC was now powerful enough to do in software what the amiga could do with hardware acceleration and more. Underworld essentially invented the western first person immersive RPG. Nothing like it existed before it; it stands there in 1992 like this bizzare anachronism. Like finding a rabbit fossil in the pre-cambrian. It wasn't just graphically; it had factions, it had rudamentary stealth mechanics, swimming, jumping, basic physic engine, an ingame map where you could take notes directly on the map, slanted floors, slanted walls, bridges. The game fulfilled the role of dungeon master. The action didn't happen to an abstract representation of a party moving on a grid with 90 degree angles; the action happened to you. No game before it I would have called immersive, except for maybe space sims like Elite. I was not naive to 3D even back then; I had played Stunt car racer on the amiga, Hunter and star glider 2. I had even tried VR on the amiga (!) on a trade show at about 5-10 FPS (it's not as sick inducing as you'd expect, because it is too unconvincing to induce motion sickness; dactyl panic or something similar it was called, players shot crossbows at each other). No game before or since has been as impressive to me. System shock, the elder scrolls, Half-life, Thief and Deus ex all unabashedly borrowed from it. Today it doesn't look that special because we can look at games that came after it; mostly by the same developer, like System shock and thief. But before it, there was nothing. If you look at a game like Wolfenstein 3D, it was much more incremental. You can see predecessors like the catacombs 3D games, Hovertank 3D and so on. You can see how it grew out of the 2D games.

For me, those games bring me a lot of good nostalgia back in time. I remember the struggle trying to get those KB of RAM needed for those 386 games, the IRQ and DMA port of soundcards... wtf, I even remember need to run a command on dos to get the mouse working. Those cryptic adventure games (you need help ? call HOTLINE xD) Damn, I also remember all those copy protection wheels, codes, and that stuff. And how much I spend nearly 5-6 months, writing info, maps, puzzles, and all that stuff for complete Waxworks or Elvira

Time well spent, I'd say! These kind of showcasing videos are brilliant to get a glimpse of what's in a game and to see if it's relevant to your own interests. Shareware diskettes and such were rather hard to come by where I lived as a kid, so this is most helpful to find any games that I might have missed. Are you going to be making more of these? Later the stupid all got a computer and game studios discovered that more money was to be made making crap for the masses. why risk making a game for a niche market, and make a small profit or a loss, when you can make the same game every year and shove it to millions of brainless people for huge profits

The great thing about adventure games is they made you THINK! It also gave you a great deal of satisfaction when you were able to solve a puzzle and open a door or a locked box or something. So satisfying. Now don't get me wrong I loved shoot em ups like Doom and Hexen, but man playing games like Alone in the Dark and I have no mouth and I must scream really gave me the willies back in the day.

Play a game like Waxworks on the Amiga. It's amazing how much better the soundtrack is, tense and creepy as opposed to cheesy and a bit ridiculous. The music on the Jack the Ripper level was particularly atmospheric. The one on the graveyard level made you feel like you were up against the undead.

Man was this the best year for gaming ever? I played and loved almost all of these titles with some exceptions (inca for example, doesnt look too appealing i might have just forgotten about it - Ween The Prophecy from Coktel i adored though). Many I have recently replayed and they hold up very well. Hell I started a playthrough of The Black Gate just last week! Good vid man, warmed my heart. I sometimes wish they never invented the 3D graphics card :)

I played almost all of this games, really the early 90s were the golden age of videogames. I would say the most original ones which are fun to play even today are: 1) Bumpy's Arcade Fantasy, this game is so original I haven't seen anything like it ever. 2) Quest for Glory 1, the mix of graphic adventure, and RPG made it one of the most interesting Sierra games. 3) Dune 2, this gave birth to the moder strategy games.

Bumpy's Arcade Fantasy is a sequel to a 1989 game Bumpy.
