They’re the only people who seem to have wealth and time freedom. What’s the point of going into a profession like Law, Medicine, Accounting, Engineering, etc. when all those professionals seem to be stressed out with their responsibility or corrupt to afford an easy lifestyle. ETA: I’m a new professional in accounting and have started finding joy in doing my job well and having a niche and very applicable skillset. But it’s still really difficult to imagine myself staying until manager+ due to all the responsibilities and stress mine have.

The fact that most of the teen and young 20s influencers that we see living incredibly lavish lifestyles; showing massive, extravagant shopping hauls, driving expensive cars, and filming themselves walking around these huge, fancy houses...it isn't their money at all. It's Mom and Dad's money. Their young followers and peers seem to forget that. I think it would be very rare to see a young influencer that came from a poorer background. It's all smoke and mirrors.

It doesn't matter if it's real or not. The issue isn't them. It's the people who are influenced. This selfish, ego driven, narcissistic nightmare of a lifestyle should be looked down on, regardless of its legitimacy. It's like the gang-rap era...it doesn't matter if this rapper killed someone or not, what matters is WHY are you idolizing this garbage in the first place. The issue is YOU.

I don't even think its their parents money. I think huge number of them are using every trick in the book to pretend they have the kind of wealth they have. You can AirBnB as needed to shoot a month or a years worth of content. You can buy and return products. You can credit card purchase a huge amount of fake lifestyle. In my opinion there's no way to flex anymore with material goods. In the past it made sense because there was no credit or rental markets. Today you could have two neighbors with the same amount of stuff and one of them is up to their eyeballs in debt and the other owns everything free and clear. There's no way to distinguish between the two.

As a legal editor, I think it's key to note, if a company reports the PR or gifts they send as income on their end to a 1099 contractor, then YOU have to pay taxes on them. It does happen sometimes, if reporting gift will be what makes or breaks getting a tax beak in a given year, a company will do it and you'll be on the hook. So, if anyone is a new content creator, make sure to contact whomever you're in contact with at brands to ensure if they have tax forms for you during each tax season, and set aside 30% of what any gift you get would cost just in case.

Don't forget the shocking number of things that can count as tax deductible business expenses. I'm a research writer, and every book, article, etc that I buy is a business expense. I doubt a whole lot of influencers are financially savvy enough to utilize them without a good accountant, but some likely do. Also, on the topic of veneers, Jessica DeFino wrote an article recently about them, definitely recommend her work! It fits well with the themes of this video/channel.

@@sydneym-y Yeah, I don't know how much something like that would apply, but I've seen one influencer girl, Kaeli Mae, who did a tax prep video where she shows the stacks of receipts she saves from restocking videos that she preps for her accountant, so it probably depends on the purchase. That being said, it's quite shocking how many things can be considered business expenses. My friends took a whole class on it in college and one of them based her whole career in minimizing people's taxes as much as possible and it's endlessly fascinating to ask them if things count as a business expense!

The talentless rich traditionally filled the void of creativity within them by propping up the arts via their wealth. That was the foundation of noblesse oblige, the idea of the rich and powerful as the pillars of society holding up the masses. At some point after industrialization, they turned that inward and made the absorption and consumption of wealth itself a form of entertainment and art. It’s an empty craft, as it’s always been, but lifestyle influences are a natural extension of that. They don’t bring an art to the table, so they must become the art, but many have little to give outside of the metaphorical equivalent of a Van Gogh replication on key chain, so financial envy it must be. The true wealthy are laughing all the way to the bank, building their billions on the backs of consumer debt.

Happy you made this! I keep trying to explain to people who are interested in influencing to please think about things like longevity, 401k, insurance all that so that'd why i encourage if you can, to create on the side cause there's so many opportunities out there! Just don't make it a full time until the audience and pay is so consistent that you'll never have to worry! I influencer part time and I'm like medium income now but started out low income and just showed my little life but I romanticized it without having to spend any money, there's so many free and interesting things to do and share! So totally agree with you and hope people realize this sooner cause I know so many people who want to do it and are stacking all their eggs in one basic that is so unreliable it just makes me worried for them.

Your tone is so good and effortless to listen to! When I watch videos on topics like this, I often find that many creators lean heavily into exaggerated emotions-baffled, outraged, or just downright scandalized. And honestly? That usually makes me skip through their videos because I can't sit through all the dramatics. But with your video, I actually watched the entire thing-no skipping, no fast-forwarding. And that, in itself, is a talent. Even beyond that, your content doesn’t leave me feeling drained. With other creators, the over-the-top reactions can be fun in the moment, but afterward, they don’t sit well with me. It’s kind of like a high followed by a come-down-entertaining but mentally exhausting. But your approach? It’s different. It’s engaging without being overwhelming, and I didn’t walk away feeling like I needed to detox from the energy overload. Honestly, I just really appreciate your style. Keep doing what you’re doing! 😊

Anyway, I always side eye Influencers because 95% of the things and experiences they show off are Rented, Sponsored, or funded by fraud. Going into Content Creation is a viable career path but one should always have a Plan B and to have a separate sturdy stream of income through legal means in case things don't work out. And ALWAYS LIVE BELOW YOUR MEANS. Even if you make it Big, think long term and make sure that you can be okay of your App of choice gets Banned or if your Content goes out of style. Cara, everything that you talk about inherently relates to Wellness. I comment on a few videos every here and there about Wellness, and how? We're not educated about it in school... In fact, the whole School system should just be torn apart and remodeled around Wellness, then we won't be so selfish and think about ourselves all the time... Not thinking about the consequences afterwards. We all strive for external and internal happiness throughout our lives, but we've all forgotten about our communities, how to talk to each other, what it is to be actually intellectually smart.. Self-Aware and aware of things that we've discovered over the years of our existence.. occupationally we need to be taught how not to be wage slaves, and learn how to work for ourselves... And financially be taught how to be smart with our money. They avoid it and make it seem like it's such a taboo subject, unless you study accounting or something in college. The system is geared against everybody, and no one has time to be one with himself, because everyone is so busy with life and everything it has to offer now.

Shorr teem thinking can be expanded outside of consumerism. Apply that to problems in the world. Its cheaper in the short term to address the symptom but it cause more to be wasted long term to fix it.

I used to travel a lot for business. I flew business class, I stayed in good hotels, went to fancy parties, etc. If I would’ve put that on TikTok, it would’ve seemed extravagant. Twist: I was making like 60k at the time.

I find that like most art and sport careers.... being an online influencer (or content creator dare I say) is something only a very very small percentage of people actually do well in. A vast majority will have to keep it a side job or hobby if they don't want to hemorrhage money trying to make it big, and even more will barely get any recognition for what they do or are trying to do

"influencers" was used to describe business tycoons and social trend setters. I didn't see any of that since a long while.

Celebrities have to pay taxes on those gift bags. Influencers are supposed to pay taxes in those PR gifts (including the books you get). They don't count as gifts under tax rules. I bet the influncer ecosystem would change a lot if tax authorities enforced their rules.

I’m not sure if it’s a cultural thing, but I’m from the U.K. and my parents instilled into me the value of money at an early age. My sisters and I would get money for Birthdays, Christmas, chores etc and if there was something particular that we really wanted, our parents would say that we could, but we had to use the money we had been given or saved. They would sit us down and work out how much money we would ever have to save or how much we’d have left over. That for me really made me think to myself if I really needed whatever it was. Most of the time I didn’t buy the item and have forgotten about it. However the items I did buy, I can still remember them and the joy I got knowing that I had worked hard to get it.

Veneers have been a thing for decades. Same goes for basically everything people/celebrities/influencers are spending money on (right now). Except for NFTs or crypto, there’s nothing new. It’s just more in your face, due to multiple social media options. Also most content is fake, and most “hauls” etc. are simply paid promotion. BTW: A lot of debt etc. is actually a standard business procedure, as “influencers” are actually registered businesses, and debt goes towards owed taxes. Fun video. Best wishes ❤ P.S.: I don’t, and never have watched Mr.Beast, because the concept and person suck. I do often watch hauls, because they show me items I’ve been considering buying, or even give me new ideas, in compressed form.

I have been an influencer since a while , I do get things sent and I am usually honest about it because I work a full time job too. Dyson sent me couple of stuff and one of my friend who was saving to buy it has a student loan and was planning a child / wedding and home loans and so many liabilities . I did tell her this isn’t a priority and if I get something new from them again I would give it to her . She still ended up buying it with her money , I feel it is a personal responsibility too as much as it’s for influencers . There are gonna be people who earn more than us , we need to be grateful for what we have . I have recently taken myself off from lot of PR list because I felt this constant comparison isn’t adding any value to anyone .

1 thing that irks me the most in the beginning is that most of these ppl don’t even know their getting caps, not veneers.. their getting their teeth shaved not knowing you don’t even need to do that for veneers

What I've noticed from ppl in hustle culture, is the mantra of You gotta spend money to make money. Which is true to a point. But I know ppl like my brother in law who keeps the magin very thin, and the day his investments don't give enough returns, the family will suffer. It's a very unsafe way to power through life, just hoping that each step you take will support you enough to keep going, with no safety net, just climbing higher and higher.

Influencer jobs should be a side hustle and not someone's main source of income. Use it to better your business, get your foot in the door somewhere or as part of what you do because the unexpected happens. Backups are helpful so if something changes, you can still make money.
