When you mention grey motors (sideplaters) I immediately remember gudgeon pin rattle. In the early 70's i purchased an EK Holden for $100 as a first year mechanic apprentice. A mate gave me a block that had 149 pistons fitted, (one was damaged) I never ended up doing anything with it. Fitting the rear main seal (wick type) is an exercise of ones patience, a mongrel job. Even worst with a "Sneaky Pete" tool with the engine in the car. Permatex should work on your head bolts. better than nothing!

Greys bring back a few memories not always good ones . Have to ask where the hell did you find stitching plugs ? Tried to find some about 25 years ago and no one i tried even knew what they were ended up braising up the cracks after careful grinding and still held up after 5 years that was on a hillman hunter . Other than the 9 gallon fuel tanks the grey did not like summer they overheated just glancing at them but no real damage done unless you got them glowing red .

The old Grey Motors were pretty much bulletproof with the rope rear seal that was guaranteed to leak all over your garage. You can understand the need for a Steel Crankshaft with the lack of Main Bearing supports ??

good ol greys they were a reliable engine had a few in my fj in the late 70's i have a full tin of that holden head stud sealer but not sure if i need to use it on the arp head studs? do they use a different sealer been look for a repco crossflow head nearly bought one in the 70's but when i took it off it was in such bad condition i decided not to buy i guy wanted $600 at the time for it

Canadian cast blocks were 132.5 CID, Australian cast ones were 138.

@@Circlotron why do a 138 red then
@Circlotron
@Circlotron Ай бұрын
@@philipbrown2514 Unless I misunderstand your question, by the time they were making LC Toranas in 1969 the grey motor was long gone, and they needed a motor that size, so 138 red it was. Would drop straight in where the other size red motors were fitted whereas the grey 138 had different mount points, besides being totally outdated by that time.

No sealer between the two rope seal joints? Let’s hope it doesn’t leak man. Hopefully those Mercedes rope seals have some asbestos in them.
