@chj2 That's right. Prince would write, produce and sing the songs and then come up with the concept of who and how the songs would be sung. Example, Vanity 6, The Time, etc. He did all of the singing first and they would duplicate the sound and look that he wanted.

Prince gave this to the Family because Warner Bros. didn't want him to release any new material at the time. They wanted him to tour in support of Around The World In A Day. So Prince stripped his lead vocal off the tracks and put Peter and Susannah on vocals. Thus the Family was born.

I agree, I once saw an interview where he was asked what he was most proud of acheiving, Everyone thought he was going to say money/fame/awards, etc. He said when he was 15 or 16 he vowed he would write/compose a song a day for life. The host was dumbstruck and asked where were those songs, Prince said they're at home, they haven't been perfected yet. Can you imagine how much material is in his vault? They had to hire people to get into it, and they reported floor to ceiling stacks of music.
@beatz046 жыл бұрын
He didn't really give it away though. The Family was basically him, with just Eric Leeds saxophone added, his voice replaced with Paul Peterson's and added vocals by Susannah plus Clare Fischer's string arrangements. Everything else is him, song writing, performing & producing included. I guess he got most of the royalties as well.
@markraich20766 жыл бұрын
Well, The Family, much like The Time, was a “band in name only”. 90% or more of it was the same as any other Prince song. He knew the record label wouldn’t let him release music as fast as it came out of him, especially in his “golden era”. The production, publishing, and by the time of this album, a portion of the sales (since they were on Paisley Park) all went to Prince. That also includes the artistic vision, which is pretty much why none of these bands (except The Time which reformed without Prince’s input) lasted.
@artdogg505 жыл бұрын
@@markraich2076 The part of the record companies not letting him release music as fast as he wanted is true. This was his way around it. Once a producer gives away a song though, it really doesn't belong to them anymore except for a monetary value, which the writer and producer usually took anyway. Awards for best songs often go to the songwriter, which often isn't the artist performing it. Writers give songs to other people all the time. This is really no different with Prince, although it's viewed that way because of the secrecy that usually isn't there around it.

Angel Pabon Jr, that’s the thing about Prince, he was not selfish. He made the song but saw another person can add something to make the song POP. If Prince was selfish with his songs, we wouldn’t have Chaka Khans “I Feel For You”, Sinead O’Connor “Nothing Compare to You”, Sheila E “Glamorous Life”, The Bangles “Manic Monday”, Vanity 6 “Nasty Girl”, Tevin Campbell “Round and Round”, and Alicia Keyes “How Come You Don’t Call Me, Anymore.”

Prince and Susannah sound great together on this, and Paul did a great job with the vocals too :)

on this version, all vocals were prince.

thedeanfactor That's right, Susannah and Paul recorded their version later. Wow, amazing that his falsetto was that good!

I thought so too until about 2:33 when there does appear to be a woman's voice singing background intermittently. I'm thinking it may be either Wendy or Susannah.... Possibly Jill Jones.

I think that's still just another layer of Prince vocal?
@kjs97566 жыл бұрын
Matt Sephton Most likely. He usually added several layers of his own vocals to his ballads.

I remember arguing with someone in the 5th grade that Prince was the original singer and writer of the song. I remembered him singing it and when that group came out who were under him did it and it got radio play I kept saying it. I was right
