Hi Steve . The latest version of OTT has settings to lock at 45 forced or not forced and also 30, Im having better success lock it at 30 . I’m using a 1070 I7 at 4.7ghz . Also a point to note I just found this out after months of wondering why my performance was rubbish. DISABLE nvidia shadow play !!! I get much better performance ... MSFS was unplayable in vr. Once I disabled SP. I got an experience that was OK. My XP11 has greatly improved to enjoyable and DCS is now awesome . I usually set about 1.2 in the OTT SS. Thank you for your hard work

Yeh check out the log in your OTT it will say an update is available . It’s worked wonders for me whilst I await a 6800xt or 3080 stock alert lol

This video helped my Rift S experience massively, and kinda unbelievably. It was stuttery at first so I reduced the Render Scaling down 5 at a time 3 times and now it's perfect. I can't believe I can now clearly see text on the H145 screens and tablet in VR! Also Seafront Simulations boats were just big blocks and now they render beautifully. Thanks very much !

Hi mate - as some of us are still not lucky enough/committed enough to be able to get our hands on the latest VR tech, either due to cost or casuality of use - It would be great to see a 2022 update for the Rift S. It's definitely functioning way better than a year ago and along with OTT and certian drivers/settings - the clarity is getting way better, it would be great to get an update for the best settings for these budget options. We all dream of a Varjo but lets face it, most won't ever be able to afford this. Thank you!

Thanks for the setup guide. Is there any way to use the Rift S passthrough mode to be able to easily see my actual flight controls so I can see what buttons I'm pressing? I understand that most basic controls can be done by feel, but would also like to be able to use the autopilot functionality of the Bravo throttle quadrant which would be impossible from feel alone. Excellent stuff. Busy playing with all the VR settings on my Rift and agree entirely that the performance hit to keep the clouds is worth it. Is that FS2020 in the video and if so where did you get the Spitfire? Looks a pretty decent model and is one of those planes I think every sim should have in it :)

Thanks, so helpful as I just got my Rift S and was struggling with this as it was defaulting to Steam VR json file. Most Oculus users path for OpenXR setting is C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\oculus_openxr_64.json Now just need to get my "air legs" to avoid the motion sickness :-)

If you update your OTT to 0.86.8.0 it offers the option of locking ASW to 18 and 30 Hz as well as all the other settings.

18 is actually amazing, I can go through countryside towns at ultra for many settings plus 130% resolution on a 2070 and it is smooth! I can take the graphical glitches in the cockpit if I move my head really fast if the outside looks that good!

Need to have another go with my Rift S on Friday. I had it working with just the Oculus app and nothing else, now it just laggs the screen, flickers black and shows an exclamation mark. I want to give up with it as its just a Fs2020 problem as it works perfectly with everything. Hoping when I follow this on Friday I can sort all my problems out, I'll update when I do 👍

What for me works best with a 3950x and 1080ti with the rift S is: Putting my super sampling at 2.0 in oculus tray tool and the render scaling ingame 50%. I got the feeling this works smoother and my instruments look good. I will try your settings and compare, thanks for the great video.

The Open Runtime registry change is not just if your Oculus isn't going into VR. My Oculus was still going into VR without the registry change but it was then using SteamVR and the experience was horrible and stuttery. This is not a fix but a must for Oculus owners.

Hello guys! Some time ago I used to fly on my TrakIR4 but now bought Oculus Rift S and started using it. I am having mixed feeling. Maybe you can answer some of the questions. I have Honeycomb Alfa + Bravo which also makes it hard to use autopilots buttons und some switches. I try to manipulate them without watching but it is a bit hard. The stuttering (jittering) is really nasty. Tried ASW off, or 30Hz (Oculus Tray Tools), but it stutters anyways on low, default or ultra VR presets in MFSF. On the other hand, flying on a VR is something really stunning! The perception of the perspective, surroundings, altitude is awesome! My Laptop spec i7-11700, RTX 3700, RAM 64.

I've had one for a few month but when I lock the rocker mechanism I still notice a slight forward/backwards wobble, like it's on a marble at the balancing point. Not horrendous but once you notice it you can't un-notice it. Does your chair have the same issue?

Just got done watching the video and I have to say... I think the tip about loading in VR (Or setting your settings the same as in VR) is what might help me the most here. I've flown the same route with the same plane in VR and one time it was good (amazing, actually... best VR experience in my life so far) and the times after have been bad. So maybe that's why. Also it seems that sometimes when I try to do VR in the sim it runs like butter and sometimes it's a nauseating mess. I'll have to experiment with this once I'm done with my current flight.

Rolling back the driver like you mentioned made a great difference on performance for me. Only issue for me at the moment, when i turn the landing lights on the sim seems to crash....

Glad the driver helped, although that's a very strange crash! Hope you get it fixed :/ Could it be hardware related? In other words, do you use Saitek panels or just use the mouse?

You should update Oculus Tray Tool. With the last update there is other options for ASW that let you lock refresh to 30hz, which is 27fps for the Rift S (80hz / 3). With this option I have constant 27fps with AWS, 1.4SS and in game TAA 60%, no stuttering and since the sim can run at 27 fps, I have a really smooth experience with almost any settings on High/Ultra on my i7 3770k (10 years old, my CPU is on 50% average), and RTX2080.

Sorted now , another comment noted that the file path you gave is wrong, but there is an amazing difference using oculus software compared to steam, it's actually a pleasure to fly in VR now.

Bit gutted rift s has stopped locking on to low fraps in ott all of a sudden, I fly from Munich to Innsbrook turn left head for water into Innsbrook then I get the hour glass and black borders wobbles it's horrible, only happened after oculas software update iv rolled back driver still same, was running sweet with my 1080ti all ultra locked to 16fps on 18hz. Wonder what it is.

Hoping someone can help me, I got my rift s today ( only got it for msfs) I have followed this guide exactly except it's on the latest version of tray tool, but ever time I open msfs I get " FATAL ERROR dash has encountered a fatal error. Please reload dash to continue. Press any button to reload dash" every time I do it goes to the oculus logo then straight back to this message so can't actually use be mode. Aside from the obvious things like making sure you are using a USB 3.0 slot, windows and drivers are up to date I can't say for certain unless I'm sat with you! Hope you get it sorted sorry I can't be more help.

Don't know how old your Rift S setup was. But the default location nowadays is C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\oculus_openxr_64.json

Make sure to change your registry setting as per the instructions MSFS gave out to point to the Oculus_OpenXR runtime. It sounds like you haven't done that and SteamVR is initializing.

@@jjohnson1667 i did what you said and when i try to switch to vr mode nothing happens. i have change the path from steam vr to just having the game listed from the oculus game list. now i can start up the game from the list but when i want to change to vr mode nothing happens . the only way i could make the switch is by using steam vr and there is a warping and bending still.

nope put anisotropic back up you can definitely see that. It's not about distance objects it's about textures with a shallow angle to the camera being blurry.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't holding out much hope of running MSFS in VR on my Rift S as I only have an i7-7700HQ overclocked to about 3.8GHz and a 1070 in my laptop. However, after using OTT to lock 18Hz with ASW and 1.2 super sampling, I'm getting a really nice, smooth experience. In MSFS I have render scale at 0.8 with TAA anti-aliasing. This allows me to run volumetric clouds at High, buildings at High, and most other things at Medium. It's a pretty nice balance of detail and smoothness. A couple of quick notes: A render scale of higher than 0.8 kills frames a lot for me. Likewise, anything other than TAA creates horrible, jagged, flickery lines on buildings, so 0.8 + TAA is the sweet spot for me.

I had that for my rift s so this might work for you too.. type hdr into your windows search box. Select hdr settings (or something similar, sorry on my phone!). Turn hdr off. No more yellow!

@@Drew69ish it will only work for me in Steam Vr mode , see if yours works that way too if it does then I guess he's got something else set differently on his system. Guess we'll have to just guess what that is though, hope you get it working on yours. I found after making setting changes in any of Steam vr, oculus or tray tool sometimes I had to exit out of all of them and after sometimes restart my system totally before it would work.

A couple of things. First if you have a HDR monitor you must go into the windows display settings and turn HDR off before starting MSFS otherwise when you switch to VR you will find yourself sitting in a completely yellow void. Secondly I disagree on your Anisotropic advise. Anisotropic has little impact with a decent video card (I'm running a 2080Ti BTW) with Ani set low I find that on approach the runway looks a horrible blurry mess and once on the ground the runway marking also look horrible further than a few yards ahead, I run the full 16X with no noticeable drop in frames but even at 8X it should still look more than acceptable.

This didnt work for me and i stupidly didnt copy the old registry file information, so i had to reinstall the whole game to put it right. i was already using the same nvidia driver, but my issue after i followed absolutlely everything in the video and using OTT ,was when i loaded up msfs i couldnt switch it to vr mode at all, not by clicking the "switch to vr" button nor by pressing ctrl+tab, it just did nothing and was running really poorly in 2D. viewers beware!

Okay worked it out, the path given in the description for the rift S is incorrect, hes missed the program files off the beginning, so it should be C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\oculus_openxr_64.json

Hi Steve, Tried all these settings on my computer but still not Rift s vision. Is it because I have brought MSFS 2020 through Steam that i cant get it to work in oculus rather than Steam VR? love the channel by the way

@@VRFlightSimGuy I tried doing that as in the Regedit. But it just says can’t connect to headset. It must be a problem with the Steam msfs download as apposed to Microsoft. Was yours Microsoft download ?

@@jasonemery8375 you don't happen to have Razor game boost by any chance? I struggles for days not being to connect (lots of black screens etc) and found the game boost was closing.the connection in favour of more juice for the game. I'd recommend turning off this or any 3rd part booster.

@@jasonemery8375 quite similar but promising too. Go into your razor program and make sure game is flicked off. Then, if you've followed the step guides, ensuring you have the correct openXR path for your vr, that should work. Let me know how you get on.
