It should just work when you buy it. These kind of problems are unacceptable! Losing the silicon-lottery is fine, that is just luck of the draw. Defects in products are not fine. @@GregSalazar Been through four different manufacturers of AIO in the past decade. All AIOs failed within 2-3 years. The increased failure rate by going liquid instead of air is something PC building YTers/reviewers should mention every now and again IMO. For 9/10 builds, water cooling is just a waste and pain in the butt.

At this point I'm extremely happy to go with Arctic. They reached to GN themselves, as they found out about their similar problem and offered fixing kit or to fix the cooler themselves to anyone. I also reached their support with some other questions and instead of "don't touch anything we don't trust neither you, nor our support employees" got clear and useful answers.

MSI, Asus, etc. all use the same mass-produced radiator and pump in their AIOs and they're honestly junk. Arctic has their own bespoke design which is much higher quality. If I had to use a liquid cooler, I'd go with Arctic.

The repair kit for my Liquid Frezer II is on the way to me right now. And you are right, this is why I'd always go with Arctic again. Instead of not helping the customer they offer a fix by themselves, extended the warranty of their product and give you an easy way to fix the problem instead of forcing you to send in the AIO. And if you are uncomfortable with fixing it yourself you can just send it in for repair if you want to. They actually stand by their product, unlike ASUS and MSI who are selling overpriced junk that is purely built to look cool instead of performing well and/or lasting a long time.

The pump itself isn't the issue, it's the liquid they used. It no doubt has imperfections that are causing it to go bad and thus block the fins and pump.

The pump-in-radiator design was originated by NZXT. MSI basically licensed that cooler to rebrand it.

I've only had one AIO failure. My h100i v2 pumped died 4 years 359 days into it's life. It had a 5 year warranty so it was replaced with a refurbished h100i XT RGB Pro (which I sold). It took about 2 months for the RMA process so I had to buy a replacement before I was sent one from them since I couldn't go without my PC. I got a h100i Elite Capellix w/ LCD to replace it, but the LCD firmware was broken out of the box and Corsair support was no help. Ended up returning it and getting the one without the LCD and then getting the LCD upgrade kit separately.

Love the honesty about not removing the protecting film. When I used to work half-time doing customer support for some business, an administrive manager wanted me to go installing his toner cartridge that wasn't working, because at first he didn't wanted to pay the visit but I was in class, first I told him by phone between classes "did you removed the protective film?" and answered "do you think I'm stupid, of course I removed it". I asked him to check again and phone me later, he then left a message saying "I'm not stupid, but you were right, it was the protective tape".

I built and fixed PCs for 25 years and my customers had way more issues with MSI then all others. Yes, some get lucky but I stay away from MSI, WD red, memory not listed in manuals and AIOs with fluid that crude up the cold plate. Some cases from NZXT have fire issues and so on.

But seeing this and reading through the comments here is making me question this again. Every company will screw up at one point but what matters is how they deal with it. It's why I don't buy parts from companies that didn't make their name by making them. Asus and msi didn't get started by making cases, coolers, or power supplies. They made motherboards and graphics cards. I'll buy their boards and cards but I wont touch their cases or psu or coolers with a 10 ft pole.

Their justifications were, it’s just cheaper to replace than having to ship to them, fix and ship it back, while breaking their blades were to prevent 3rd party from “trying to fix them”

This is crazy! I have the 360R AIO I literally swapped my AIO last night after a week of noticing this. I called MSI and my model did not fall under the recall even though the same issues are happening and they told me to send it in still not sure if I will. My Pump was making a crazy whining noise, one day playing a game and temps were almost 90 degrees Celsius. You would think spending over $130 my AIO would last more than a year? Nope! Less than 10 months. I’ve gone to a Lian Li Cooler and much happier. You know this is also an issue when the 360R AIO is $99 on Amazon. Stay away from this pump completely! A month ago I bought an MSI 280R cooler and from the first moment I regretted that purchase, one of the fans was not spinning at all, I wrote to MSI support and they told me that I had to send them the entire cooler just for one fan. I would have, but I explained that I live in Nicaragua and that shipping something this size to the US would be 20 times more expensive than a simple fan. So I decided to buy a spare Artic P14 PWM PST and try to fix the fan and it turns out that one of the coil wires wasn't even soldered to the PCB! Luckily I have some experience in micro-soldering and was able to repair it but it turns out that it makes a very annoying noise. The truth is that I regret having bought an MSI cooler since reading the MSI community forum these types of products tend to have many faults and now that I see these types of problems as in the video I don't expect my cooler to live that long. In summary, stay away from MSI AIO.

Aye, these companies.. 🤦‍♂️ If MSI AIO coolers are known for clogging, they should issue a recall for all sold MSI AIO coolers, but it's too much work for them. I have heard to avoid MSI AIO's, that's a bad image for them unless they do better QC before putting them up for sale

Well MSI doesn't actually manufacture any of its AIOs. Haven't heard of any issues with the Asetek-made units (K and S series) which are the same as NZXT X and Z series, Asus Strix and Ryujin, Gigabyte Aorus AIOs and a crapton of others on the market. It's the Apalcool/Apaltech models like the MSI 240R and Enermax Liqtech series that are having the clogging problems.

The MAG version aio's are the ones that have issues. The Meg versions with the asetek type of pump don't have issues typically. I have the meg S360 version and it works great.

I had the same overheating issue with a 240R 6 months after buying it. The RMA process was easy and MSI replaced the unit with a new one pretty quickly.

The issue is that ALL of them affected should be included in the recall. No one should have to wait weeks for the defective one to be returned, tested, and replaced. As stated in the video, their recall process involves having a replacement sent *PRIOR* to shipping out the defective unit, resulting in very little PC down-time.

@@GregSalazar totally agree that all affected units should be recalled. When my RMA was accepted, they sent me a replacement unit first with a return label to send back the defective one. MSI did drag their feet a bit when I originally spotted the problem. They did not offer this solution at first and it did take a while to eventually get things resolved. Your videos definitely helped speed things up.

Had the same problem after 6months. Got refund afther sending it on RMA. Bought another one (but broken) from ebay for 25$ and fixed it by myself. Cleaned everything and replaced liquid with destiled water and car radiators liquid. Works like a charm for about 6 months. One good thing with this AIO is that you can get if for cheap and fix by yourself.

Nice to see that this is finally coming to light. I had bought a prebuilt that had one of these in it and it died six months later. Went to BestBuy and they said I needed to deal with MSI with it being an MSI prebuilt. I was like no problem, I call MSI they then give me the run around and tell me it's BestBuy that has to replace it. Needless to say I just ended up buying a Corsair AIO and set the MSI AIO on fire and then threw a party. I will not buy anything from MSI ever again.

In Turkey if you have Msi 240R v1 or 360R v1, You need to send your cooler to MSI and they'll send v2 to you without even asking a question. A lot of people have replaced their v1 with v2.

I have one of those AIO and it too stopped cooling my cpu after a few months. I didn't bother sending it back as they wanted the box and extra bits I no longer had, so I took off the fans as they were led and could go elsewhere in the PC and bought a good looking LED air cooler. No more from products from MSI for me. But thanks for taking apart the product and showing the problem. One day I might take mine apart and fix it for use in a far older PC?

At least in my case, it's not just MSI. I bought a new Lian Li Galahad 360 AIO, and after a few months, 60C temps idle on my 5800X. RMA'ed it & will see if the replacement works, but it's interesting my Scythe Mugen 5 Black Air Cooler is keeping my Ryzen 7 5800X at 26-28C idle. Go figure.

I had 2 units from this AIO, for me and my brother, my brothers died first after one year exactly. At first it started making buzzing noise from the pump, but the temps where acceptable. Then the temps suddenly reached 100 c and thermal shutdown. Living in iraq is tough, no shop allows an RMA, so i took it upon myself to find a solution. I tore it down, cleaned the inside with a forceful jet of water, cleaned the copper unit, then i exchanged the liquid which was brown and gunky, with distilled water. The temps returned to normal, actually better than stock ;). And now its been running for 2 years without any issues. It has to be the liquid, thats the problem, its clotting and building residue. I did the same to the other cooler, which has the exact same issue, and again, everything is fixed. I was really surprised that no one mentioned this problem in reviews...

They need to have a “fix-as-fail” policy with a wider range of AIO serial numbers, that way If yours isn’t affected you’re good, but if it is experiencing issues it will be either replaced or refunded immediately

I'm glad I came across this specific video. I have the 360R and over the last 4 or 5 months it's been making a weird noise when any load goes on the cpu. The last week, temperatures have skyrocketed under load, to the point my computers now just a web browser (even timestamping video's on youtube causes the temps to get close to 70 degrees.) They did the same to me, so I decided to do it myself. drained the AIO, flushed it with and ran distilled water through it then cleaned it out again. I then replaced my AIO tubes with clear reinforced irrigation line,(basically what was already there but not black) then replaced the coolant with Mayhems Nuke XT-1 UV green, and my temps now never go above 45c on full load. $25 coolant, 75 cents for hose clamps black, and 6ft of 6$ irrigation line. grand total of $31.75, can be had for less if you buy less irrigation line.

Thanks Greg for bringing up this issue to our attention. Sadly, after seeing this, I would tend to NOT buy any MSI products at all at this point. I have fortunately not had to deal with this issue myself, but I would be weary from this point on not to deal with MSI after seeing this! BTW, we all make mistakes in our builds at one point or another...so no big deal there! Just as long as we correct it!

I ended up getting an iBuyPower prebuilt last year because it was genuinely the cheapest option at the time for something with a >3060 card. The iBuyPower rebranded AIO in that started failing too a month or two ago, idling at 50 C and spiking up to 75 - 80C on opening any program at all. New AIO got installed and now no issues. For the longest time, I thought they were rebranding from an NZXT Kraken, but it looks like they were rebranding from the MSI CoreLiquids all along (I should have figured from the rad-mounted pump). I haven’t heard anything from iBuyPower about their old rebranded coolers getting recalls, but they may want to investigate too, based off of who they were partnering with

I had this same issue within a month with a 240R, I went through the RMA process and the replacement also had the same issue within a month. I ended up just opening the cooler, cleaning it, and refilling it. I haven't had any issues since then. I specifically chose this cooler because the pump is in the radiator and it seemed like the best cooler with that configuration, being from what I thought was a reputable company.

Have never purchased one of their msi aio but this would make me stay away from their aio if in the market for a new unit. @@tanja-k All the AIOs I've run into have been able to be opened up from the cold plate easily, the same way that was done in this video. The slightly more annoying part is getting the liquid topped off again if you drain it all out. I think more AIO manufacturers should support sending out service kits the way that Arctic has. I would guess that MSI hasn't done that because they don't trust their customers to mess with the cooler, however, I don't see how an end user could do any worse than MSI did with filling it.

I remember repairing a rare SIEMENS X-ray analysis unit for steel products from the National Customs Laboratory in Spain. The fast hydraulic brass connections had been corroded by the electrical activity of the atoms of the circulating cooling liquid (15% glycol bidistilled water). The coolant took the viscosity of the hot chocolate. That's why my PC is cooled by a "be quiet" dark rock 4 pro (3 fans). It is very effective.

Looks to me like they’re mounted with the logo side facing the camera. That’s usually the side that sucks air, so they’d be exhausting air from the case. Edit: upon closer examination though… I wonder if those fans are backwards. It’s hard to see the blade pitch at the angle the camera is.

+1 comment from someone that had a V1... called MSI to have it replaced under recall... and was told that it wasn't part of the batch that was recalled... even though it was less than a year old and completely dead. I wheedled a free shipping label out of them after a lengthy and frustrating phone call with the support team. They sent me a V2 to replace it after about two weeks. No issues since but I'm also constantly monitoring my temps with anxiety just waiting for it to hit 95. When money allows for it I'll be upgrading to something that isn't MSI.

So funny you had posted this because i just drained my MAG CORELIQUID 240R and put new coolant in it and its working pretty well. Just drained it and refilled it a couple times and refilled it again and boom seemingly the issue is fixed. Has been a month so far. I just built a new rig with 12600K and the 240R V2. I had heard about the V1 being recalled, and at the time I bought the V2 thinking the V2 existed because the V1 was recalled. I haven’t had any problems so far with the V2, but now I’m going to pay extra attention and do some stress testing to make sure it doesn’t fail on me

When the Coolermaster ML240L's were popping and spraying coolant all over the inside of PC's, I got mine replaced without a question. They even asked me to send them pictures and reciepts for everything else in my PC that got destroyed by the coolant, but luckily it only dripped onto the gpu which I cleaned up and never had a problem after that.

Oh come on, I just bought a brand new MSI MPG Coreliquid K360 V2 yesterday to replace my Thermaltake TH360 ARGB that died in about 1.5 years. Same issue here, my idle state CPU started to show 60-70 degrees. I was already fed up with Thermaltake and didn’t have the patience to wait for a repair or RMA. And now I get this video like a punch in the guts.

Hi greg! First time stumbling upon your channel. I built my friend his system (r5 3600, msi b550 tomahawk) and initially it had an id cooling 360 frost flow which had a leak. We then proceeded to had it RMA'd because the leak was going to his gen4 nvme and was causing issues (bsods). Then they replace it with this, exact AIO. MAG coreliquid 240r. Things were okay at a time but then he started to notice his PC getting hot, and i monitored it to be having a temperature of 90 degrees C while only running photoshop and illustrator. Went on to disassemble this particular AIO because we couldn't RMA it again due to it being over a year old then and saw the exact same thing you did, albeit much worse i guess. I cleared the sediment, replaced the coolant with distilled water and tried to run and stress the CPU. Guess what, it didn't have any problems anymore with overheating. This clearly shows that they have a defective product, and you were right that they are really downplaying the situation. It is severe as we are located here in the Philippines. It's in a worldwide scale to say the least.

I noticed one issue, the radiator was mounted in the worst orientation possible. If their was any air in the AIO then your screwed from the get go, even if it is clogged. Incorrect radiator orientation is one of the leading causes for pump failure/excess pump noise.

MSI's RMA is so bad. I had a MSI 1660 Super that would crash and have purple lines go across the screen when plugged into a monitor. I applied for the RMA in early May and received my first replacement in mid June. The replacement was the same card i sent out to them and had the same symptoms. Sent it back again and mid July i received another 1660s with all of the screws scattered inside the box they shipped it in. Called them again pissed and they finally sent me my third 1660s in early august... Last time im ever buying a MSI product. I had a small scratch on my 3070 from EVGA and they sent me out a new card within two days before i even sent my old one to them.

I had a Cooler Master AIO. The pump failed and they advance shipped a replacement. There was no recall. This is what they did normally. The model I originally got was banned at the time of the RMA so they honored their warranty terms and replaced it with an equal or better model as part of it.

I have this same AIO cooler in my PC paired with a 10600k overclocked with idle temps at 27 celsius & a max of 55 celsius on benchmarks with no sign of any issues & I've been running it for 2 years now, been seeing a few videos on these Msi coolers having issues & I'm glad mine is still going strong! Msi has always been good to me & I've never had issues with any products so it sucks to see others having issues & not be able to get a recall.

Yeah, bought an MSI pre-built earlier this year. The AIO pump rattled like a 30 year old bathroom fan for a few days before it just burned out and had to replace it with a new one.

I got the 360R about a year and a half ago. Within a month the pump started making rattle noises. I removed it and rotated it in all sorts of directions to try to get air bubbles out of the pump cavity, but that didn't work. temps where fine just a loud rattle noises. I went to RMA it, but I also didn't want to go weeks without a cooler for my computer. so I ended up taking it apart, there was some of the white gunk on the copper fins and a couple bits in the pump cavity. I drained the whole loop then stretched a rubber hose over the fill port and started filling it with distilled water. I plugged the pump into another computer so the pump could push the water throughout the loop. after getting all the air out as I could, to stop the pump from rattling ( I know there is supposed to be a little air) it finally started working correctly... at least for a while. I had to repeat the process of draining and filling after 5-6 months after the rattle came back. It's working correctly for now, I know there is supposed to be an corrosion inhibitor, in there. but I'm not spending any more than what I paid for the darn thing. I bought a Deep Cool AS500 as a backup. The reviews on amazon where good, so I didn't think much of it. it was only after I got it where I found a forum where people where having similar problems. I have even watched a twitch streamer I happen to fallow remove there 240R and shop for a new AIO live on stream

I had the same sediment problem with my Silent Loop 2 240mm, I started having thermal throttling issues. Believing it was due to a lack of coolant, I refilled it with the bottle that came in the box and began to notice how those sediments were passing into the bottle.

I manage a VR lab and we ordered an MSI prebuilt with an 11700k and 3070ti, the AIO had the same issue less than a year later. I replaced it with an NH-D15. Oddly enough I’m surrounded by a lot of systems all the time, and in the past 2 years I’ve experienced more AIO failures than I’ve ever seen in my life. All the same thing - overheating, pump working, all different brands.

Reviving this because have a Fractal Lumen and have the same symptoms as your video. So took the AIO out, opened it and long and behold it had that same white film. Also the MSI AIO pump head in your video looks exactly the same as the Fractal one. I cleaned it out and luckily didn’t spill much liquid so will see if that solves the overheating issue.

I had the exact same aio but the 360R from MSI. There was no problem in the first 4-5 months my 5600x temps used to hover over 52-55 during gaming! But after 5 months the temperature started to spike to 80°C during normal task/gaming! The pump is in the radiator rather than on the CPU and used to make bubbling noise and when I slightly tilt the AIO the bubbles noise used to go and the temperature used to go back to being normal. But after 8-9 months it has became a daily issue hence I switched back to Aftermarket air cooler and no problem since then! I would advice everyone to avoid MSI AIOs. Try going for Corsair/NZXT AIOs.

I have a 240R with this problem. It was less than a year old and was rejected on the recall and RMA. I will never use water cooling again.. Now using Bequiet Air coolers and getting better cooling than the 240R.

In open water systems (that's non-AIO for the young folk), good practice is don't use dissimilar metals, avoid nickel-plating, don't use fancy coolants - just distilled water, and some sort of anti-microbial (copper sulfate is typical as is a silver coil). Sorry fellas, we generally don't have to go through what so many of the AIO coolers often seem to have. I know they're convenient and cheaper, but I'm just not sold on them unless I really can't get a tower air cooler to work for an application. Open loop > tower air cooler > AIO > OEM cooler

I had the same issue recently, I had the MSI 240R liquid Cooler, I did an RMA form and it only took about 5 days for me to receive the new replacement AIO, I replaced the AIO the same day I received the replacement and so far so good, no issues so far. They didn't have to receive mines first which was excellent.

Friend's Coreliquid 280R V1 displayed the same issues; MSI replaced it thru the recall and they sent him a 240R V2, and now I have it lol. I haven't found any idle temperature issues.... yet

I've been through this before and I found out that it's not the defect. It's the design flaw of pump in rad from Apaltek. You got the replacement but the problem won't go away. Mine was not the Coreliquid 240R or 360R but the MSI 120mm AIO that comes with the pre-built MSI PC. To fix this problem is to buy the new AIO from other brand. MSI, please for the love of god, it's not like you don't have money. Just by Asertek patent.

This is why I don't trust hardware with short warranties. If the company isn't comfortable with a long warranty then either that company doesn't have sufficient QA experience, they don't have sufficient QA protocols, or they have insufficient deals with component suppliers.

Gotta love how I got a replacement V2 from MSI that I had to pay shipping for, and now the V2 pump is making the same clicking noise the old one did, and any load over 50% skyrockets the CPU to 90-100C. Like come on MSI.

I actually just gave up on sending my 240R back. I’d rather just silent protest and never buy their products again. That was my first, and probably last water cooler I’ll ever buy, as well as my last MSI product. It stopped working properly after about 6 months of use. Pulled apart the cold plate and their was gunk all in the fins on the backside of the cold plate. Cleaned it, refilled the aio, and it tested fine for about 2 days before I started getting crazy high temps again. Cleaned it, refilled it again (yea it clogged up), worked for maybe a few hours before temperatures went through the roof. Gave up and bought an ID cooling SE-226.

I had the exact same issue with my MSI 360 AIO. It did not meet the serial number requirements either. So I spent 40 dollars on deionized water and Cryofuel to flush out bad fluid/sediment. I then refilled with the Cryofuel. Almost a year later and I still have great temps on my cpu. I took pictures of the sediment and blockages. Also this issue seems to be very wide spread, but often miss diagnosed in reddit forums and comment sections as air bubbles or improper mounting of the radiator. The sediment rattling In the pump though is very distinct in comparison to air bubbles if you know what your listening for. Thank you Greg for shining light on this issue because MSi is definitely down playing and miss handling the issue which is quite obviously a fault in their QC process or cost saving strategy that has failed.

the worst thing is, MSI has already decided the cost outlay for a full recall is by no means comparable to the cost of end user complaint and cost of return and replace. What MSI doesn't realise is the PR damage their AIO failure is having, I for one will never buy an AIO product or similar MSI product ever again.

Any chance of having the 'gunk' analyzed ? Possibly it's a material in the coolant that is used to remove water from the coolant, and too much water is getting into the coolant therby activating an over abundence of this compound. There was an aviation incident many years ago that caused a similar problem with the aircrafts feul system.

It's probably dielectric corrosion, there was alot of problems with AIO's and that problem in the past... using a coolant that allows this to happen. Copper in the block and aluminum cooling fins in the radiator.

buddy tossed one a couple weeks ago at work. I took it in cause i like to tinker, took it all apart from the pump to the head and it was def junked up. but cleaned it flushed atleast a gallon of diswater by filling the system and running the pump and emptying untill all the clr i used seemed like it was out. then filled with a mix of 2:1 diswater to automotive coolant. been running great for a month no stop no audible changes to pump and water sounds. temps are maxing at 60c full gaming load were on a hyper 212 they would get to 76c on an ol 7700k. the idle the other day was cooler than room temp 71f
