glitchsmasher To be fair, I have an MSI board with the click bios 4 and if you don't remove all these boot devices there's a difference of like 10 seconds in the boot time. If you set your bios up correctly those post codes on the bottom right won't appear, you press the power button and it will start windows right away.

What I love most about MSI motherboards (well, their products in general tbh) is not the amount of features, design (anything with Dragon on it is insta sell to me) or user-friendliness, but the sheer immortality. If you aren't deliberately trying to kill their products with a flame-thrower, you will most likely never have a broken product from MSI (artifacts on GPU's can be "baked out" xD). PS. I wish you could disable the LED lights in the BIOS. Sometimes you want high-end stuff without the "glint".

Negnav123 No it is not. When you enable OC Genie it auto disables turbo core boost and speedstep, eist etc. The 3.3GHz is base clock and the max boost state is 3.6GHz when 1 or 2 cores are active. When 3 to 6 cores are active max boost is 3.4GHz.

I have the Z97 Gaming 5 and I love it. The board looks great, feels solid, Killer Lan hasn't given me problems and I am more than satisfied with it and the 4690K. Sure, I spent €144 on it but I feel it was worth it for the quality. Recommended.

This exact board was the 3rd and last MSI board I've owned. Every MSI board I've had, dating back to 2005, has crapped out on me within a year. With this board, the bios module failed according to their tech support, so they warranty replaced the board with one that was physically warped (wouldn't sit level on a flat surface). Had power issues with that one, so I ultimately went with an ASRock board as a replacement. Have had zero issues with the ASRock. When it worked, however, the MSI was nice for what it is. Still, never again with MSI

I love MSI, have a GT70 gaming laptop, two 980's and an X99s MSI Gaming AC 9 with a 5930k and DDR4-3000; and watching SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE have issues with MSI boards, I can say if you are looking to run high speed ram (ddr2666/2800/3000/3200/3333/etc), if you are looking at heavy overclocking. don't buy the MSI boards. the ram support is lacking and the Asus design with the OC socket having extra power pins really makes a difference with high overclocks IMC stability (remember intel's IMC's only officially support 2133/2400! ANYTHING past is an overclock!!!!!!!!), ultimate core overclocking, and cache overclocking (not a big deal outside of superpii). MSI is also being much slower with regards to BIOS/UEFI/Compatibility/feature updates/fixes/inclusions (which should have been from day-1) than Asus, Asrock & Gigabyte.Annoyingly for less experienced overclockers, some of their bios/uefi terminology is non-standard (like line leveling & many other power features, ram check features) that can trip-up newbie users if such things are needed. The Avermedia encoder is WORTHLESS! 1080p30fps is BAD in 2015 with such a system! ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS for streaming! the quality per bitrate is lower than nvidia's NVEC, AMD's VCE, Intel's Quick sync and far lower than x264. Which using the Haswell-e / Haswell-EP CPU's on x99, you SHOULD be using x264 CPU encoding because it is vastly superior when quality matters (especially streaming!) if you are just looking for the best stock board for stock features, ya the MSI boards are good and have a ton of features.

Love this board. I have the previous version (no USB 3.1) with my 5820k. My last motherboard was an MSI 780 from many years ago. I have high hopes that this sucker will last even longer. Love the bios and all of the features. I didn't push my last system too much due to heat but being back on water again I'm loving my weak OC of 3.6 and peak usage temps of 55C (video render + gaming). We'll see how far it goes when the mood takes me.

***** Great review Jay, love watching your content. One thing I don't agree with is you comment on the overclock ability of the AMD cards. I'm running a Sapphire R9 290 and my card is sitting on 1200mhz core / 1600mhz memory @ 78c max temps, maybe I scored well in the silicone lottery. Although it does get a little loud (even with custom fan curve in afterburner) I'm really happy with these cards at the price point. But in saying that the mail man just dropped off my EVGA GTX 980 Classified, which your review helped me decide on. Keep up the good work.

I'm using the X99S Gaming 7. Just a tad before USB 3.1 was available. Still the same functionality, so I'm not bothered.

I just built my first gaming pc and I used the MSI gaming 5. And I'm loving it. Have nor tried to over clock anything yet. If any one knows how well the wizard works or has a link to a good tutorial, plz share.

I really would like to try a MSI board and the gaming line does look appealing but I don't like how they went with the QualComm LAN. Not that QualComm makes bad chips but Intel has some of the best NICs money can buy. I kinda feel like the Killer software is really sort of a gimmick anyway. You could set up your router for packet prioritization in the same way.

So why can USB get faster speeds than SATA?

UnderwearThief Why not?

Loh Jia Hung I heard people explaining that SATA couldn't really get past 6Gbps because of power draw issues, that's why they are developing SATA-e, M.2, and NVME and all that stuff. So it's interesting to see USB and Thunderbolt getting 10.
@LohJiaHung

UnderwearThief My guess is that SATA is mostly dedicated to data transfer, so less physical connectors are dedicated to power. USB and Thunderbolt have to power much more stuff from a single port, so I'd expect more voltage from a USB port compared to a SATA. I'm probably wrong.

Loh Jia Hung I don't know what the voltage is on SATA cables, but USB is 5V, and possibly 500mA. The power connector for SATA is twice as big as the data cable, so I would think it's 12V.

UnderwearThief Ah yes, but that's USB2.0, which has a data transfer rate of a measly 35MB/s, nothing compared to that of SATA's 6Gb/s. I'm sure that USB3.0 and 3.1 provide more voltage. Or at least I think I'm sure.

So lets say you put up your frequencies and hrz up too high and you can barely boot up... if you hit that Cmos switch, it resets everything to defaults correct?

I was gonna go for it, but a lot of people warned me about durability and efficiency of MSI motherboard. So now I'm gonna buy Asus Strix instead. The fact that Strix has 10 less power phases, still worries me. But I've seen some pros overclock on Strix. Still not sure.

When are we going to get Sata express drives? USB 3.0 had passed the Read Write times of Sata, now we have USB 3.1 which will really blow SATA out of the water?
