Thank you for the video. I was going to try this product to rid my small St. Augustine lawn of dollarweed (penneywort). I have a small lawn, a one-gallon sprayer and the dollarweed is under my beautiful oak tree. After watching your video, I think I'll use something else. I have used Celsius (original). It doesn't kill the dollarweed but knocks it back enough that it is hardly noticeable in the summer months. It also doesn't kill my oak tree. I think I should just be happy with that, and know that my oak tree will continue to have a long life... because I watched your video. Thank you.

Shelf Life? Hi Matt, just a few questions. What is the shelf life of MSM Turf once it's mixed? Also, what is the proper disposal method for MSM Turf mixture? I have a one gallon sprayer but rarely do I use a whole gallon of herbicide on my lawn. How can I store the mixture for later use? When I clean the sprayer, the rinse water will be tainted with MSM Turf. Should I be concerned about the rinse water? Thanks in advance.

I purchased MSM Turf because I have huge spots of Virginia Buttonweed in my yard. I am in south Louisiana and the grass is mostly St. Augustine and Centipede. After watching this video I realize that I do not have the equipment, the experience or the patience necessary to apply MSM Turf properly to prevent damage to my turf. Is there another product that is easier and safer to use that I can apply to control these large areas of virginia buttonweed?

I live in south LA as well, and I have problems with buttonweed too. I've had some success with a strong concentration of Ortho Weed B Gone and multiple applications.

This herbicide in low amounts with a low rate of 4 way, and liquid iron do wonders. I'll even use it stand alone around .40 per acre.... It will trim down the salads in turf, and does a slow kill on weeds- meaning you don't light a place up, but they slowly fade. Want to remove Bahia? Does it.... Love this product because it's so effective and cheap.

We just moved to Florida and have St Augustine grass. We have very small areas that have dollarweed in the lawn. I’m wanting to spray with a 2 gallon pump up sprayer. St. Augustine grass and Zoysia grass and a little Bermuda grass and spray the entire yard am planning on using spray dye. So I don’t waste it by over lapping too much, in east Texas. How much per gallon. I am thinking 0.0125 per oz gallon. First time to try this product. Also concerned about bushes and trees.

I use this to spot spray on my Centipede and mixing it in a hand can is hell. It’s like .011 oz per gallon per 1000 sqft for the 0.5oz rate. I use a little tiny scale to measure it and sometimes it still makes brown spots, so I half it’s strength and it is perfect. Works miracles although it’s slow. I wouldn’t blanket spray it but rather I put red dye and use it for spots remaining after other herbicides fail. My red dye hand can is experimental. Treatments are to small areas away from trees and flagged and monitored for a couple weeks before I use the rest of the experiment. Oh and it’s stable with my tap water

Thanks for an informative video. We are moving to a house on 3 acres. I'm mainly interested in killing the bahai on approx a 1/2 ac around the house. I would like to encourage the centipede that is mixed in with the bahai grass to eventually make up most or all of the lawn. After watching your video I realize to treat 1/2 ac will require a very small amount of MSM. I would be applying with a 4 gal backpack. What volume of MSM do recommend mixing with 4 gal? I don’t think I’ve ever seen such application specificity on any herbicide label. You can tell their lawyers were heavily involved with the packaging so as to limit future lawsuits. As someone with three oaks, I will probably have to avoid this product. Does it affect critters in nearby water like atrazine? (I bought some atrazine 15 years ago but never used it after learning about its negative effects on groundwater; I live in a swampy area. Still have that container of atrazine because I have no idea how to safely dispose of it.) Thank you to the maker of this video for not sugarcoating the extreme danger of this product. If only there had been videos like this about glyphosate decades ago... 2,4-D no longer has any effect on my weeds, so I have no idea what to do.

Nearly all counties in the US have a day when they allow drop-off of old herbicides that are out of date or no longer needed. There is no charge for this service and the purpose is to safely dispose of these items.

Great video, A lot of what you said about mixing was way over my head. LOL I'm in central Florida and I have 3 acre's of weeds dallasgrass, Bahiagrass, Crabgrass, I want to over seed with Bermuda seed and some area's I will box blade the grass out with my tractor, And plant seeds and let it grow for about a year then spray with MSM. how many applications will I have to spray to completely kill off the Bahia? Our grass in Florida will stay green almost year around if we don't get any frost. But My lawn gets worse every year I don't know what kind of grass it is but it is slowly over taking my lawn and winter it looks very bad. I also have sand burrs or sand spurs what ever they are called very bad whats the best way to get rid of them?

I have a 2 gallon sprayer and st Augustine grass. What is the simple every time ounces to 2 gallons to use? and i'm using the spray beside as walk method... While spraying should i pump up max pressure and just do a normal walk on every pass, maybe a little faster, and then can I just do it like that for 10 years every time I use it ? I'm not targeting any 1 weed.. just a average normal mix that I can use the same amount every time, to take the confusion out of it.

You guys have some good content here! So I bought MSM for my yard because the label said it works with some of the grasses I have in my yard. One of the first thing you said is don’t use this on cool season grasses. In one large section of my yard I have blue grama and buffalos grass (not cool season) and another I have Kentucky blue (cool season). The weed I’m most concerned about are fox tail, kochia, Tansy and common mustard and crab grass. There are others but those are the worse. What would you recommend for the those two areas that I have planted?

Suppression means it will knock it back, but likely not kill it. That's my point. You can cause injury, but not death of the weed

I can’t blanket spray only pump spray on Bahia. I calculated about 1/8th of a tsp (you can buy a 1/8th tsp sometimes it’s called a ‘dash’) in a 1 gallon tank is a tiny bit over the .01/oz per gallon they recommend. I just broke down the oz to grams to get the closest ratio.

Matt, Tony here. Great video! Highly in-depth. I would like to treat my in city .25 acre lot for mainly Bahiagrass. Given the intensity and how concentrated this product is, what would be the best method of application? I’m in East Texas and the bahiagrass is horrible! Yard content’s: peach, apple and pear tree saplings, storage sheds, porches, mature oak and cedar trees and I also have pets. I just want to do this proper, right and safely. My father wants to bring over his 31 gallon pull behind sprayer while I was considering just using a 1 gallon pump sprayer. I realize mixtures at this low level amount of water can be difficult and with yard layout, overlap is a concern. I have purchased 2 ounces of MSM turf in liquid form. When it comes to this topic, you seem to definitely be the one to address these concerns! Thank you in advance for your time, it is greatly greatly appreciated!!!

I applied msm to my tall fescue cause Bahia problem. I know not to use this any more. I did it in may. Will I be able to get new growth reseeding in September? I have yellowing in all the spots I used it. I have used other products and never had this before. I already had patches from last year from someone else putting out something that prevented reseeding last fall. I hope putting out this msm doesn’t prevent me from filling in those spots nor replace grass from msm application to prevent Bahia coming back this summer. I don’t think I will see Bahia but now hope I see new grass come during my reseeding this September.

You should be good to reseed this fall. MSM is quite phytotoxic to fescue, but we all make mistakes. Learn, adapt, evolve and bring it back better than ever!

Thanks for Such a quick response. The guy put out post emergent last year fir Bahia before fall and before I bought msm for myself. Then by reseed time in September no grass grew in those areas but it wasn’t in my Bahia problem area only but more spots as well I ask him to spot treat. The guy used a product he wasn’t familiar with enough to know it’s permanent effects. . so I bought msm to prevent Bahia from coming this year with how it spreads and kills the area where it’s at after it leaves in cool season. I just was hoping what I did wouldn’t stunt grass for a year like what he did from what someone told me from do your own help desk. I stop using lawn guy after last September and doing it myself completely. I already cut my own lawn and use prevention and fertilizer but had his help for aeration , reseed and some time pre and post emergent with fertilizer.

I have another question. I believe the grass is dead in those areas not just yellow from msm. Last year I did a lot of de thatching myself. I read fesque doesn’t really need de thatching and it catches itself in fall etc also if you reseed no need a well.

@@ericb2861 right, fescue doesn't really need dethatching if you're fertilizing appropriately. You can dethatch to try and make better seed to soil contact when overseeding, but it's not a necessary cultural practice. The residual effects of MSM depend on your soil pH. If you have high pH soil it can absolutely linger for many months.

I didn’t do another test this yet but been aggressive with suggested fertilizer type Pennington 22 0 11, dolomitic lime and just recently ironite and will do milorganite good for Summer also if given right time. Thought about some type of humic but probably not going to do it. My other post emergent I used was blindside which has never change color in grass. I used that early feb along with Anderson .48 preemergent not at same time. I had POA problem with patches without grass from last yr.

Quick question sir what rate do you mix msm in cold weather temps to control henbit and bittercrest when these plants are mature so they don't need a second app the company I work for says it's a app error meaning I'm missing areas in my pattern I've been doing this for six yrs and I will not rest until I prove them wrong speed zone southern kills henbit and bittercrest on contact because of the dicamba and 2 4 d they won't buy it because it's too expensive I do all warm season turfs the yards that are infested with winter annuals didn't die on the first go around the same weeds I've been stressing about henbit bittercrest etc please respond

Due to its high concentration, soil persistance and root uptake would not recommend. Even 1 ounce per acre is way too much considering other brands with same concentration recommend only 5 grams per hectare or 2 grams per acre...That whopping 14 times the recommended rate could have nasty effects on desirable plants.

Matt, I highly respect you and want to make that clear out front. But the thing is that I have heard a lot of great things about MSM Turf from people like Greendoc and Jason Creel (lawn Care Life). I highly respect them as well. This video comes off as a bit negative about the product, when people like Jason Creel highly recommend it. I understand that its something that must be carefully measured as its extremely potent at low concentrations. This leaves me conflicted, because I do deeply value your opinion. So I guess my question is this, as I have bought MSM Turf but havent applied it yet (too hot right now). I also live in Central Texas and have a high pH soil (7.6 at my last soil test, although I have applied sulfur and citric acid since then). I bought the product thinking I could blanket spray it and depend on soil residual in times where the pre-emergent barrier is seeing some breakthrough. Is this a good idea? What rates would you recommend? Also, would MSM Turf be something good to apply to dormant bermuda in the winter to help with winter weed breakthrough? This video is to make people nervous about using it. Double check your math. Triple check your label. It's a great product, but it even makes greendoc nervous. Correct your pH and apply at .5oz/A accurately, and no worries

Using this should make you think hard about your rate, how accurate and drift resistant your spray equipment is, what kind of vegetation is nearby that you cannot afford to kill, weather conditions during as well as after the application. If you are not thinking about all of this before applying this product every time you decide to apply it, you should not be applying it.

Please check my math. Per acre application rate of .5 ounce converts to 14.17 grams per acre. 14.17 divided by 43.56 = .3253 grams per 1000 sq/ft. For my one gallon sprayer I need mix about one third of a gram of MSM. Does that sound right?

@@TheGrassFactor this is pretty dang intimidating. I have a Bermuda lawn that I "scalped" for leveling 11 days ago. I thought it would be a good time to kill the Bahia that's in it since I haven't cut and the Bahia is crazy tall. Should I hold off until my Bermuda is fully recovered from the scalp". By scalping I mean I took it down from probably 2.5" to 1.25" with my rotary mower. I'm in Alabama with Bermuda and it's HOT if that matters.

O.5 oz + the 48 oz Speedzone. Hit the broadleaves hard in early spring, you may not have to fight with them so much in hot weather. That is what I do. No dormancy where I am at, so Speedzone + MSM is my December-March application.

You continue to crack me up. This product was originally developed by DuPont for very specific uses and for the most part was used for high end turf management ie golf courses. Once DuPont no longer held the patent the product became cheaper and then lawn geniuses decided to use it on residential properties The problem is it has an extremely high soil retention capacity and is known to cause tree death especially in oaks. Is the herbicide effective? Yes it works on some tough broadleaf weeds but why use a nuclear bomb to destroy a trash can? There are a billion other safer DIY herbicides out there and I’m not sure why you would even put this information out there Remember herbicides with higher retention times are more easily leached out into susceptible waterways You really need to dial back in my opinion and yes the only reason I commented is because some how you are my algorithm Lawn care doesn’t have to be rocket science nor does Joe McMansion need to be throwing down professional products

I assume you didn't watch the video because it highlights the dangers of the product, especially in high pH soils. We can continue acting like this herbicide doesn't exist, but distributors are cramming it down professional applicators throats as a "low cost alternative" to Celsius, etc. The problem with that - the dangers surrounding this product are not effectively communicated. Someone must educate anyone who picks up a bottle of this. That begins with analyzing the label. Sweeping it under the run is only going to lead to more disasters, a la the Scotts Southern Weed & Feed (metsulfuron) disaster.

We cannot eat the fish in the majority of the tributaries to the Cheasapeake bay because of contamination from lawns farmers and industry. Several states like Maryland have banned all phosphorus fertilizers. So get a reality check Continued use of Uber toxic herbicides to contour weeds is ridiculous. In fact I’ve never seen a true weed free lawn. Anyone who attempts to spend the time and money to have a golf course lawn is just trying to make money off of people’s naivety. Follow the guidelines from your local extension office and don’t get sucked in my influencers.

I have been totally organic for over 15 years and I still dominate the block. Learn soil biology and you will understand why the oil industry and YT influencers are wrong . Wow... this is so much more complicated than I thought. I don't want to kill my St Augustine grass but it's got all kinds of stuff that ain't grass (weeds) and dried up grass (just bought the house). OMGI live in Texas now I know why my grass didn’t grown for a full season. My PH is 7.8. I think I killed my last lawn with MSM. It was looking worse after I applied it and in the low spots all my SA disappeared. Also my bushes were we’re losing branches. I redid my lawn in in Zoysia and I think I will toss the MSM in the trash.
