ok so hear me out. “She Used To Be Mine” from Waitress is a heart wrenching love song. Jenna is singing about how she loves her old life and she wishes to go back to when she loved herself and her husband. her baby does eventually save her from her husband but she is singing about how she wishes she could love herself again and it might not come off immediately come off as one but it definitely is one if u look deeper into it.

@hazeldaniels16795 жыл бұрын
@@PrinceTrexus yeah, I think they are both sad I just was hit a lot harder by satisfied partially by how it's set up. Burn is a lot about Eliza's anger though, shes a passive but caring character and Burn is when the stress of holding all her dissatisfaction with her relationship is finally pushed over the edge. It's sad, but also angry and an expression from a caring person pushed too far. The second half doesnt come off as a love song anymore though, it's not sadness anymore, its anger, and instead of wanting to know why, or wanting him back, now shes done with him. That's the only reason why I brought up whether it was a love song though I suppose it doesnt actually matter much anyway Sorry if I go an annoying amount in depth and seem uptight, I spend an obnoxious about of time analyzing shows and enjoy the discussion i guess 😅

Julia M. Is that a love song though? She talks about love, yes. But it’s more about her reflecting on how cruel life has been to her, versus what she dreamed it would be. I wouldn’t call it a love song. Though it is one of the saddest songs on broadway, especially knowing what comes next for her (and what is actually happening to Cosette) and probably the saddest song on the musical, at least for me.
@juliam.66764 жыл бұрын
Grete Pihlak I agree with all you’ve said, your analysis of the song is spot on, my only reasoning for categorizing it as a love song (from my subjective perspective) is because Fantine primarily discusses love unrequited and a love lost as the reasoning for the “dream she dreamed” - because of this integral underlying theme of love central to the entirety of the song itself, I view it this way. It truly is a sad bop, though!

Okay, "On My Own" is absolutely deserving of the spot but the explanation of why is so wrong. What makes Éponine's story so tragic is: she's poor, she's starving, she has parents that abuse her, she has to assist her father in his criminal schemes in order to stay alive, and her only friend whom she deeply cares for will not love her back or even really give her the time of day. This character is in a dark pit with no way out and the one light in her life she does have will not help her or try to save her. What makes it so sad is that this song is Éponine's self realization that she isn't loved by anyone and has no way out of her situation and realizes it doesn't even matter if she lives and is honestly probably better off dead and ends up dying in order to be released from a dark torturous and loveless life. She is someone who searches for hope even though there's no hope to be had. She's someone who despite coming from the scum of the Earth is a genuinely good person but is ultimately doomed despite her efforts to be good. That's what makes this song of unrequited love so sad: She ultimately realizes she has no love in her life from anyone and that she'd be better off dead. That's what makes this so sad. And it's this setup that leads to me crying like a baby during A Little Fall of Rain every time I hear that song. The two together paint the heartbreaking fate of the character and the unfortunate fate her circumstances have forced her to meet.

I wouldn't class "Movie in my mind" as a love song, it's more of a lament of their shitty lives as prostitutes in Vietnam. "I'd give my life for you" and "I still believe" though would both be strong contenders, both so tragic, the former though is more familial love rather than romantic.
@wendydavis71354 жыл бұрын
Given how that show plays out, I would argue that quite possibly one of the saddest songs in it is "Last Night of the World". It's already got the feeling of two people desperate for something real and strong in this terrible, place, but then the ending of the show makes it so heartbreaking in retrospect. Though "I Still Believe" was a contender I also thought of, too.

I agree, but it’s not really a love song. The whole point of the song is that, while Frollo, Quasi, and Phoebus are obsessed with Esmerelda, she wants nothing to do with them. All she wants is for her people to be treated fairly. In my opinion, In A Place of Miracles should have been on the list. The parallel of Phoebus and Esmerelda singing about their future together, and Quasimodo singing about how he will never find love is absolutely heartbreaking
@natatatm4 жыл бұрын
Honestly while I love “on my own”, I think “I dreamed a dream” is far more poignant, especially from the perspective of Fontaine, who’s truly been reduced her lowest point possible at that point. It isn’t just hope for love she’s lost, it’s essentially her will to live. Both songs still make me cry though.

"Send in the Clowns" from 'A Little Night Music', written by Stephen Sondheim, would be my pick for saddest Broadway love song. Desirée's anger and heartache upon realizing that Fredrik, the man who once loved her and proposed to her, has now rejected her late offer of marriage is simultaneously beautiful and excruciating to witness. A truly magical and tragic musical moment.

@mcmptn2 жыл бұрын
I would honestly give "On My Own" and "A Little Fall of Rain" a tie because they're almost like companion songs. In the former, Eponine sings about imagining Marius walking with her in the rain. In the latter, she's finally with Marius in the "rain," but in this context, it's the blood of her fatal wounds rather than literal precipitation. "A Little Fall of Rain" is also to the same tune as a song where Marius sent Eponine on an errand to find out about another girl (Cosette) for him, and this connection seems to suggest that as Eponine dies, it's like she's acknowledging that Marius loves another, even though she's pretending he's there for her. It's also a sad song because the lyrics are actually happy. Instead of lamenting her death, Eponine sings about her joy that Marius is with her, and she'll finally fall asleep with his arms around her; her death is the happiest moment of her life. Meanwhile, you can tell that Marius is starting to realize how much he tortured Eponine by using her as a messenger between Cosette and himself, and he feels guilty and wishes he could make it up to her somehow, but it's too late; all he can do is comfort Eponine as he dies. As for "On My Own," it's to the tune of Fantine's death song. Fantine also died for someone she loved (but in this case, it was her child rather than a man), so the melody of "On My Own" indicates what will shortly happen to Eponine. There are also some songs where a character complains that another character doesn't love him/her, but by the end of the show, they're together. This is not one of them. Eponine's love is never reciprocated, so yes, she really is on her own, and she's going to stay that way...quite literally for the rest of her life.

My good friend sang “On My Own” at her fiancé’s funeral, he passed away, suddenly, beside her while they were sleeping. "I don:t Know How to Love Him" is really marginal in this list. It's a wonderful classic song and it gives you a feeling for the hard life that Mary had. But, ultimately, it's a song of redemption and spiritual uplift. So it's really a sort of celebration as she leaves her old life behind and discovers true, spiritual love. I think that you're missing the whole point of this song.

I wish Being Alive from Company was on the list. It is one of the few songs that evoke such a primal reaction out of me. It's Robert's harsh misunderstanding and realization of what love and relationships bring to people. In some performances, with how it's directed, it draws the audience in and by the end of the song, you've felt all of the emotions that Robert went through. It leaves me winded just listening to it.

A Scott In a *wayyyyy*, it kind of is a "love" song.Michael practically lost Jeremy to the Squip because he wanted to be popular. Jeremey started to ignore him because he (Michael) was a link to Jeremey 1.0. Through out the musical, they were the best of friends basically to the point other students noticed: Boyf Riends. Now, I don't really know how long Michael and Jeremey were friends for, but I'm sure they had a *really* strong relationship and it probably broke him knowing he wasn't enough for Jeremey. The Pants Song also explains the emotions that Jeremey's dad and Michael have for Jeremey. Sorry for rambling hope you have a pleasant week.😊 -Also yeah that was a funny story.😂
