I so agree. "Never again" is not only something the world has to make sure does not happen _to_ the Jews, but also not _by_ the Jews. Any asymmetric oppression and violence is bound to cause a spiral of violence. The only way out of this is the mutual acceptance of everyone's right to live.

Yes, but with one caveat. The "Jews" are not slaughtering children in Gaza, amongst other atrocities. A nation-state is. And this nation-state, in turn, is being assisted by other nation-states, beginning with the United States which is supplying the ordinance and opposing multiple calls for a ceasefire in the UN while, at the same time, placating its domestic population _by calling for the reduction of civilian casualties._ Naturally, mainstream news outlets operating in nation-states engaged in the genocide support the genocide by supplanting coverage of the genocide with stories equating opposition to the genocide with antisemitism. This has been so effective within nation-states engaged in genocide that the mere appearance of an essay in _The New Yorker_ ignites international coverage in nation-states engaged in genocide diverting attention away from the genocide--as evidenced in the KZbin clip, above.

Well said! Playing the ethnicity card is a vile move by Netanyahu, especially in the current climate. Marching with tiki torches shouting "Jews will not replace us" is antisemitic. Accusing "Jewish space lasers" of starting forest fires is antisemitic. Stirring up rhetoric so that Jewish people and synagogues are attacked is antisemitic. All of these things are actively happening. Questioning the decisions of a government, raising valid concerns about security, humanitarianism, and safety, whilst trying to stop human suffering and genocide? That is NOT antisemitic. In fact, I would argue that those are the people who respected the Jewish people enough to listen to Holocaust survivors, learn from the past, and *believe* that "never again" should stand. All it takes for the triumph of evil is for good men and women to do nothing. The people questioning the decisions of a government (whose religion is irrelevant, because the questioning is based on their actions not their faith) are doing something - they are trying to enforce the "never again" message. Learning from Jewish history and acting to try and prevent future human suffering is about as far removed from antisemitism as it gets.

I believe Mehdi said in an interview his show would air a few more times to fulfill the contract but had been terminated thereafter. So with this recent clip from his show, we're getting cake made of sawdust: it's great to see & hear from Mehdi, but MSNBC hasn't changed their minds about cancelling him. Of course he will appear occasionally as an analyst & fill-in, but that's not the same as having a dedicated show of his own. Access journalism strikes again!

Same! The similarities between the two - even down to the fighting back, the tunnels, and the vicious suppression, is uncanny. It has always puzzled me that a country so determined to teach about the Holocaust so that it may never happen again (& they are right, it should never happen again - to anyone) are perpetrating similar acts of barbarism against their own enemies, and yet they don't see it. Their vengeance ensures that nothing about their behaviour seems "familiar". Those who have truly studied history and can look at this situation without bias see the glaringly obvious similarities. Masha Gessen is a thoroughly decent human being, with integrity and courage, to raise this point publicly and stand up to those who need to be told that they are wrong. The award was thoroughly deserved. Those who served in WWII and who survived the Holocaust (& the people they handed down direct knowledge of those experiences to, without prejudice) see what is happening. If we truly mean "never again", we have to be clear - it is "never again" for humanity, not just the zionists hiding behind Holocaust survivors and saying that only Jews should be protected, whilst committing inhumane atrocities. EVERYONE should be protected.

Courageous and true words from Masha Gessen. I don't understand how any fair-minded, objective and reasonable person can deny that what Israell is waging in Gaza is genocide and ethnic cleansing.
@zingarovskij11 ай бұрын
I was wondering that myself. But look: genocide and ethnic cleansing have really precise meanings. Like any word we use. If we use the word genocide now for Gaza, we are necessarily equating Gaza with past historical events that we already call genocide. Armenia, Rwanda, Cambodia (the first coming to my mind). Millions of people killed. Nobody debates they weren't. But that is not what is happening now or in the last decades in Gaza. If we used that word, we would not be accurate in describing the facts. In my opinion, what Masha Gessen means (and I give the benefit of the doubt because it was not explained it) is to decry the condition of Jews in ghettos before 1939, not after 1939, so not during the enforcement of the genocidal Holocaust.

To you, I say: All humans have a responsibility to contend with whatever harm was done to them so they may avoid enacting it on others, continuing the cycle of abuse. We've been seeing what happens when an entire nation neglects to do so over the span of 80 years: they become what they survived. Who cares if there’s some semblance of government. If it’s really so hard for you to understand the comparison as children are mowed down, please sincerely reflect on who you would be in 1943 were you not Jewish.
