Five years ago, investigative journalist Nikole Hannah Jones, in collaboration with other journalists and historians, published a longform piece in the New York Times Magazine, called The 1619 Project. The project, first published in August 2019, marked the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery, and it aims to put race, the consequences of slavery, and the contributions of black Americans at the center of our national narrative. In the years since, Donald Trump’s GOP has launched a sweeping effort against the ideas at the core of the 1619 project, and other initiatives to address issues of race and identity.

Nicole Hannah-Jones is a hero of mine. I'm a white woman who grew up in the 60-70's Texas. I knew our founding documents didn't reflect me or my Black or Latino fellow travelers. But even I, someone who thought herself enlightened, became angry the first time I read the 1619 Project. I sat the book aside and came back to it again after their words had time to get past emotion. When I reread the book, I understood better what they wanted me to know. I think this is a good day, a Sunday, to start rereading again.

Kudos to you for recognizing how big a part emotion plays in our cognitive process. The ability to come back to something that is uncomfortable to seek out the full value of it is commendable. I believe this is part of why our political situation of divisiveness is so bad right now. Neither side wants to recognize that there is no righteous side, that the situation is both complex and emotionally charged, and the sometimes (well most of the time) we don't receive information (spoken or written) while we're thinking about our response, our side, what we want to be heard. Difficult times. Thanks for the steady navigation. I hope people ready your comment and think about it.

It is a testament to American Blacks that they don't want revenge but want the true promise of America's ideals. And they have proven that they will do the work to get us there. When Obama became president, he didn't work toward revenge, he worked toward equity. THAT is what detractors can't understand. If the roles had been reversed, they would have wanted revenge and they just can't understand that others could want fairness and a level playing field. I am a child of desegregation and it taught me so much. I have much more to learn and I will do that work because I believe as you do, that we CAN be a better nation.

The ones with a conscience have passed away and now what’s left behind is the likes of Mitch McConnell the chief architect of the anti democratic movement in the US . The republicans under his leadership ushered the rise of Trump and his MAGA movement. Mary Trump was one of the first people to call out McConnell and it’s amazing how little attention is ever paid to him considering the damage he has caused to the nation that will take decades to recover.

It opens your eyes to so many truths and facts about what went on during that time. It has change my life, inspiring me to want to learn more about the past. When you visit the Jamestown settlement, where the first slaves arrived back in 1619, you will find the 1619 Project book in the little shop within the Museum. To Nicole Hannah-Jones, “You are brilliant and courageous”!!!!!!! Thank you for putting together such an important masterpiece of literature. But it was my parents that brought the information to me, then I just wanted to know more. Especially when visiting historic sites in the south. My challenge to you is to think about why you didn’t know these things, how is the system is set up for/against you? Blessings, and may you use your new knowledge to bless others.

The days of when our ancestors love, supported and lifted each other up through all that they went through is truly dead and probably never coming back. Your ugly comment just confirmed that. I appreciate the James Baldwin recommendation and blessings. Everything else you could have kept to yourself. I’m not going to let you ruin the journey I’m on. I have not read this woman's writings. However, I have studied the antebellum period of American history and specific events leading up to the Civil War. The 2nd Amendment was written by James Madison and Patrick Henry, two large Virginia slave owners, to protect state militia slave patrols. All able bodied white men in the antebellum South served in the state militias to enforce BLACK CHATTEL SLAVE LAWS. The 2nd Amendment isn't about protecting freedom but about keeping black people in chains. Plantation cotton growing was America's biggest cash export commodity in the antebellum period. The whole entire antebellum South was a police state, very similar to a modern fascist or communist police state. American slavery was extremely violent. Those 2nd Amendment state militia slave patrols enforced black chattel slave laws with the mounted militiamen on horseback, the lash, the musket, bloodhounds and hangman's rope.

To this day, it still astonishes me how some Black americans are so afraid of the fact that historically (and even to this day) white people had horribly racist policies targeted against black people before and after slavery. This idea that now since slavery is gone everything is somewhat better and racism somehow vanished is the biggest ruse being pushed by every collective group involved. Those groups and individuals involved do it to protect their own fragile egos that their history isn't as rose-y as they wish and so all minorities, especially black people, will suffer for it. They just don't realise they're also hurting white people in the process. Make no mistake, every evil person does things for their own benefit, and so to them there is no wrong doing whatsoever in their own eyes. In other words, evil is in fact pure ignorance and nothing more.

4:05 "It claims that encouraging people to consider race and systems of oppression is, in itself, a form of racial discrimination". Strictly speaking, it IS racial discrimination, but discrimination is not inherently good or bad. When you're picking out fruit at the supermarket, you're discriminating based on size, color, firmness etc. What makes discrimination good or bad is whether the basis for that discrimination is just. Denying rights to black people just because they're black is clearly unjust; attempting to counterbalance America's infinity-long history of racism through affirmative action is just.

Of course hypocrites think that way. If discrimination wasn't practiced then affirmative action would have been a thing. If you worked for a year and was only paid half of your money and found out you were wronged how would YOU want to be treated?

Considering race and systems of oppression is not a form of discrimination. Discrimination is the process of depriving someone of their rightful opportunities because of their race. That's what has been practiced in this country for centuries. It happened to Asians, Jews, Irish, Italians and Blacks. The white power structure developed the blueprint and some people in our society are now hyper-sensitive, because an intellectual discourse is causing the light to be shined on its historical practice and how it has negatively affected our society as a whole. Taking a long hard honest look at race and systems of discrimination is the beginning of the effort to find a solution. We can't "ignore away" a problem.

@@danewoods7880 You really should have read my entire comment. Discrimination is not, as you said, "the process of depriving someone of their rightful opportunities because of their race", if only because that definition is so narrow that it excludes every other form of objectionable discrimination; what you described is specifically unjust racial discrimination. Discrimination is just the act of distinguishing between things, especially when preference is given to one over another. If, for example, there were absolutely no discrimination in hiring, then the first person who applied for any job would be hired, regardless of their qualifications, background etc. My point was that calling something "discrimination" says nothing about whether it is good. The justness or unjustness of discrimination depends on the context. Black people in America have endured centuries of systemic deprivation, and can not be made full and equal citizens, can not truly be said to receive the same opportunities and privileges afforded to white people, without at least some preference given to them. That is discrimination, it is on the basis of race, and it is just.

Ali, love the show but why aren't your shows archived? I think you are one of the best on MSNBC but I can't seem to watch your show like I can with Nicole Wallace and Chris Hayes ... or any of the weekly shows. I don't need a response but I would to watch your shows when I can. daniel
