It is not cheap labor. H1Bs have to be paid as much as any American worker. In fact, it turns out to be more expensive for tech companies because because there is high cost for applying these visas. H1Bs also does not mean only Indians. It is 65,000 tech visas across the world that includes Europe and Asia. It is a temporary 3 year visa with an option to extend for another 3. H1Bs are also taxed the same as a US citizen and contribute to Social security and Medicare. The only difference is they cannot avail the benefit of SS and Medicare because they are not US citizens and are on a temporary visa.

I graduated from Purdue University, Indiana with a Degree in Computer Engineering, a school that produced many of the best Engineers in the United States. For the last 15 years, even with 25 years of experience, it was tough to find a Job in IT because the Corporation prefers to hire people from India, they are cheaper, well behave, and could even work for free if they can come to America and have a Green Card and then Citizenship! Now Elon and Vivek want to bring in the country many more foreigners and leave American professionals out in the cold, the whole reason behind the H1B is the profits for Corporations, if American Professionals are hungry just because the American Culture is lazy and stupid (per Vivek’s comment!). To me, it sounds exactly like the UnitedHealthcare! Apartheid Pres. Musk assumes the U.S. tech industry is more essential than the US agricultural industry. Even MAGAt farmers have woken up to how many of their workers will be deported. The labor shortages will drive food costs up, and even if farmers can find enough US citizens to work for them, they will have to pay them much more than they pay migrant workers. Either way, food prices will increase. Some Americans may find it difficult to feed themselves and/or their families. There is something very twisted about a value system that believes it is more important to invent fraud-enabling robots than it is to grow food.

I’m an American tech worker living in Cyprus. Here they hand out passports to any tech worker who is willing to spend two or three years learning Greek. If you can learn B1 level you can get citizenship after 4 years. If you can learn A2 level then it takes 5 years to apply for a passport. I’m an American so don’t need a passport. Anyway, one thing you notice when you live here is how many retired persons have worked in the Gulf States and how many young people have worked in Dubai. Those countries hand out work permits. As you know it’s almost impossible to get a work permit in America. In some EU countries you can and you can eventually get permanent residency, with multiple return trips to immigration. But America has no permanent residency option for Indians, telling them they must wait 30 years. So wake up America. Hand over work permits and give residency to computer programmers from India and anyone else too. Because if the only people moving to America are uneducated Latinos America will become a country of uneducated Latinos. I lived in Chile 6 years and know all about uneducated Latinos. We don’t want to turn into Mexico.

The H1-b visa started out as a worker supplement program, but was quickly turned into a worker replacement program by C-level people and the politicians they donate to. There are thousands of Tech workers available now due to layoffs over the last year. They need to be hired first before any more H1-b people are brought in. Retired STEM here. I started out when Silicon Valley was a meritocracy and kids graduating known and respected community colleges with an associate's degree in engineering and related were making a good living for themselves in tech manufacturing that once was Silicon Valley. I think it started to all unwind during the mid 1980's. Tech manufacturing went overseas. Then customer service and support. Then technical support. Ultimately hardware and software engineering followed. By the year 2000 , if not earlier, Silicon Valley was cored out. Even Bachelor's and Masters in Engineering were having a rough go. Big tech had discovered they can outsource the job to a cheaper labor market or insource "skilled guest workers" on various employment based visas and green cards. H-1B being the most odious and abused. I voted for Trump with the hopes of a start down a road to making America, and places like Silicon Valley, economically vibrant as opposed to the fiefdoms of the venture capitalists and big tech oligarchs like Elon Musk.

H1b visas are actually bad for U.S. workers though, Let's look at something practical like college cost: In India the general college degree cost is on the medium to low side 7,300 usd $ In the U.S. the average degree cost per year is already 23,000 usd $ then x that by 4 This is the reality, Hlb visas are part of the reason why we are not paid a good wage (enough money to comfortably live in the United States) Everyone within the Democratic Party / and more importantly your everyday person living in the country is talking about the need for higher wages.. almost constantly. If we just look at how much we have to spend to get the degree to get the job then we have to compete with someone who is spending much less for their degree (not being burdened by as much debt) coming in at a lower price point wage wise because they can afford to, since they don't yet live in the U.S. and their college expenses are much lower plus the currency exchange rate position of the U.S. dollar ...

Yeah H1b are not easily provided to people who graduated in India. MOst of the Indians in US on H1b have graduated from US universities. Generally with a 4.0 GPA and they pay more than out-of-state tuition fees. I study at a university in Texas. As an international student, I pay $50,000 in tuition every year. I cannot even work more than 20 hours a week due to my student visa. And there is a cap on number of H1b given to people from a single country. So 75% of international students have to go back anyways after giving the government more than $200,000 in 4 years.

I used to work for USCIS(United States Citizenship Immigration Service), the majority I interviewed had H-1B visas, which later their employer petitioned them to be a permanent resident (legal immigrants). Majority of them are Indian Immigrants working in the Tech industry.
