This is a video to begin a series I am calling "Quickfire Spotlight", featuring the MSR Alpine Fry Pan. I would like to keep these videos under 10 minutes, hit the main points, compare to similar items, and let you decide.

The Stanley fry pan set is an easy competitor to the MSR at the same price and size. The pan has a doubled bottom for an even heat distribution which is the bane of camp fry pans. Check it out.

Gonna get one of these to go with my alpine 2 set, think I'll drop the handle if the handle that comes with the alpine 2 set gets a good grip of it though.

Good luck! The only way to know for sure is to take an item out an use it and abuse it. After a little while, a person tends to know what works and what doesn't just by holding an item. This fry pan is rugged, I have used a lot of pans over the years, and although I haven't abused this one yet, I can tell it will hold up just fine. Thanks for commenting. Take care.

I have a fry pan similar to that one and it is for frying at my camp site only. With the lid which can be used to eat out of I can feed myself easily and it don't take up much room in my backpack.

Does it gas efficient? Is the pan floor thick?

the tall, skinny cooksets look like a good idea to a novice because you can pack the stove and fuel can inside easily but once you've actually done some outdoor cooking on a small backpacking stove you quickly realize they're not what they seem to be... tall skinny pots are only good for heating water, wide pots and pans are better for cooking. why anybody needs a 4-piece set of tall skinny pots is still a mystery to me...

Exactly, but as long as they are happy I guess...Fry pans are fantastic for people like us!

I much prefer Stainless It looks like maybe it has an aluminum base for better heat Transfer but I can't tell by your video .. I was leaning towards a Jet Boil Sumo stove.. Jet Boil sells an aluminum fry pan with their fancy heat transfer coils on the base .. It includes a plastic cover to protect the base which can be used as a plate ..

the msr pan does have an aluminum disc bonded to the bottom for very good heat transfer. the disc is grooved to help keep it from sliding off a stove.

What do you use as a cover on this fry pan? I'm struggling with a cover. We cook all our meals over the fire and a cover is a must.

Good question. I used aluminum foil. I also found an aluminum pan lid at the flea market I planned to use for this but never got around to it. I now use a MSR 1.1L Stowaway pot and store items inside to save space when carrying.

Nice review mate. I've just bought one. I'd been looking around for months and was going to buy a cast Iran pan, basically just for durability but this seems like it will stand up to some abuse and it's only a 3rd of the weight of similar cast iron fryingpans. By the way what watch is that you are wearing?

andrew rushton My watch is a Casio G-Shock (AWG-101a) solar. Great watch, tough to find now for a decent price, but there are newer models. This is the top of the line G-Shock solar, but there are less expensive alternatives (although I cannot recommend any of them). Thanks, mate. Good luck with your hiking and the pan.

If you want to call it something more specific than ‘pot grabber’... it’s called a ‘spondonicle.’

hey can you suggest any cookset that would fit inside the kelly.kettle kettle? I was looking at buying the scout but find the cookset over priced. great video brother

Thank you! I don't know of any cooksets that small. I can recommend the hobo stove by Kelly Kettle since it's my favourite item to use with the Kelly Kettle. You can use any size pan within reason this way, just about anything. I have never found a use for tiny pans in cooksets useful to me, and stick to a frying pan and a thermos or two for cooking.

you are not supposed to detached the handle from the fry pan. The handle should fold conveniently towards the bottom and it is designed that way. if you have to detach the handle chances are it would be lost or damage.

I have been arguing with myself about getting this frying pan , now I can see how good it is. From the misleading title I thought this was going to be a demonstration about the frying pan and how well or NOT it does when cooking a camping meal , Very disappointing. .
