In my opinion, ABH made a mistake when they marketed this as the "sister palette" of Modern Renaissance. People immediately would assume the formula and application to be the same. They should have used other colours that were less "temperamental", and save these shades for a new palette, not related to MR, with a new ultra-soft formula and ultra-intense pigments, and prepare customers beforehand about how to apply them to get the best results. In any case, thank you so, so much for giving such a detailed explanation of how to properly use shadows as soft as these and about product manufacturing. As usual, it's incredibly helpful hearing opinions as honest and knowledgable as yours :)

Sisters are generally SIMILAR to each other, thus why the majority of people had assumed that the application and formula would at least be similar. They literally said that it was just supposed to be the night version of the Modern Renaissance which at very least insinuates that it is supposed to be similar. Which it definitely is not, it's an entirely different formula. The only thing that could even be similar is the god damn packaging.

It looks like I am first one here. I love your professional, honest and informative videos. I have been waiting for this review but I am glad that you don't jump out there with first impressions but take time to be thorough. I love ABH and own every pallet but despite all the info I think you have to try it yourself and purchase from somewhere you can return. I am light handed with touch and very skilled in application but I also don't believe you should have to have an advanced degree to use some damn eyeshadow

Lorraine Johnson-Coleman Completely agree! However I live in Switzerland and while yes, we get testers, also from foundation shades, we can't return cosmetics once opened 😔 I have wasted so much money and am so thankful for videos like this ❤️
@perfectlyyoubeauty7 жыл бұрын
Lorraine Johnson-Coleman exactly. I think the looseness and high level of pigment requires a very light hand and a lot of time and patience. I don't think the average consumer really operates that way. It seems like this palette would be for special occasions only. But if you are selling to the masses you need to take all of that into consideration.
@quannistar7 жыл бұрын
Thats exactly what I was saying. I'm not holding this pallets hand just to get it to perform correctly. It should have come with a big disclaimer: Too soft to apply with a fluffy brush. Must be gentle or risk hitting pan.
@quannistar7 жыл бұрын
I know everyone said that this was the review they were waiting for but I dont think they actually watched the video before commenting. She said exactly what everyone who hated the pallet said, "The pallet has a ton of fallout, the shadows are soft and dont blend well, if blended they will turn grey on the eye, and they cannot be touched hard." So based on that this pallet is still a no for me.
@smartlikewoah7 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. People are too quick to say that the ones that didn't like it are just hating or can't do makeup, but I honestly do believe there were some batch problems or something. And like you said it's just eyeshadow, so we shouldn't have to treat it like it's a nuclear bomb that we have to be super careful with. No one should act like the ones who didn't like this palette don't have valid reasons for disliking it. That's just my opinion though.

I feel your point is accurate that people apply shadows differently and enjoy different degrees and variations of pigment, color, and softness. I have been annoyed so many times watching reviews from people who do not understand this concept and call palettes bad due to preference. I'm personally not purchasing the palette because the colors aren't my preference. Your business sensibilities ( as I can see how you answer commenters without inserting your own feelings,as well as answering with respect even when it's not given on the commenters side)and logical thinking are commendable. I think this is the best review I've seen on Subculture yet. I appreciate all of the thought, time and reference material that you put into this. I'm not an artist (makeup or otherwise), so learning just a bit about the color wheel and theory was fascinating. Your knowledge about talc vs mica, cost break down and everything else proves to me that you did your research. I had no idea how pigments work, about the use of binders, etc and how that will effect performance. I think you're right, that it's impossible to give a responsible recommendation, it will come down to the individual and their preferences. I won't be purchasing this palette simply because I don't feel that I am experienced enough in makeup application to not make a mess of it. Again, thank you Stephanie for putting the time and effort into this review.

Personally I think it was a marketing flaw. Norvina even states in the video subculture is like the sister of modern renaissance and that the palette is creamy and blendable. She should have marketed towards makeup artists who know about complementary colors and pure** pressed pigments, because the way it was portrayed, like an average consumer myself I would think it would be easy to blend and use like the modern renaissance palette (which I own and adore).
@ressydm17 жыл бұрын
Day and Night are not the same. The sun is up in day and the moon is up at night. I think some people think "sisters" mean they should be the same. NO. If you have a sister, you would know what I mean. My sisters and I are very different from each other in look and style and attitude. I don't get why some would think sisters mean "the same" - very distinctly different.
@Noralet1017 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree with you. Sister palette at least means it is related in some way. And since it's not the colors, it's kinda expected to be the formula. I agree with you edwardlovrr, that it was a marketing issue. Make people aware of how this is supposed to be used and they will not complain that it's not working.
@roelin3605 жыл бұрын
@@ressydm1 then if they are supposed to be distinctly different, why even call it a sister pallet? What does sister pallet even mean in this case? It seems as though you're implying that term means nothing.

@elle10097 жыл бұрын
I did the same - 2nd look I created with this palette, but I WILL say because I was purposely going in so light handed, it took me about 20 times to get the color just right on my lid. This is not a palette that is good for a quick look. It's unfortunate though because I have about 40 palettes and I don't have to treat any of them any differently in the way I put my brush in the shadows and they blend out perfectly. Many of these shades cannot be blended and that's a huge issue whether or not the fallout is an issue. Such a disappointment overall though.

Watching this video actually made me WANT to buy this palette and that's the VERY FIRST TIME I have ever felt persuaded by a youtuber's take on an eyeshadow palette. I always feel extremely frustrated with having to brush my goddamn eyelids' skin away with most shadows + not getting a good amount of color by just touching the eyeshadow, so this is beautiful to see! I'm aware that this is likely not the way most people feel but it sounds like heaven to have a "responsive" eyeshadow as opposed to having to swirl the shit out of it + brush the shit out of my eyelids.

Stephanie, I always appreciate your reviews! I think I know where ABH messed up. It wasn't in product, but in expectations. I own a business, and the biggest thing I can do to prevent disappointed customers is to manage expectations for the products and experience. ABH decided to sale the idea of the Subculture palette as a "sister" to Modern Renaissance. People got the the palette expecting it to work and act similarly to MR, and it doesn't. That doesn't mean it is bad, but they are not the same. You made a point that you can't build color with this like you do with other palettes. I regularly build color with the MR, and have no issues. Had I purchased this palette on launch (which I considered doing, but forgot), I would have assumed, based on MR, that I could do the same. I think that has lead a lot of people to not know how to use this palette. (Though, not sure why anyone would swirl a ABH palette. I find touching works fine.) I digress, ABH should have released videos discussing the very soft packing and color payout, since it is different than MR. They should have had plenty of videos showing the best way to blend/diffuse colors. As you pointed out, they muddy when they are mixed. That is something else ABH could have explained to prepared customers to have a better, more educated experience. Getting that information across platforms, so that as many people as possible would have known, may have helped with the issues they are having now. I do think, even if it lessens pigment, packing the shadows harder will help the average makeup user enjoy the experience more and create a more mainstream-friendly palette. At the end of the day, even if a product is good, a client not knowing how to use it can ruin the experience.

88freedomwriter I agree, they probably should have explained that it's not a twin type sister, just a sister and people wouldn't have had these expectations.. that being said, this is one palette I absolutely wanted to get when it launched, but I have to wait til the holidays and I'm super disappointed that they're appeasing the masses to make it a more average / mainstream friendly palette. I don't get to splurge a lot, so every single palette takes experimenting to figure out how best to work them, but if these shadows aren't made to be hard pressed, they shouldn't be. Everything is changed when the masses aren't happy on IG these days, when the original product IS good it's just not made for the average bear.

This review made me so happy. I bought this palette as soon as it launched. I used it immediately when it was delivered and I really like it. Then all the negative reviews started coming and I just thought I had to be crazy or there was some kind of conspiracy to shade ABH. Hahaha! Then, hearing you talk about how you pack on and then blend I realized that must be it. I apply shadow the same way because of my eye shape. To each their own!

Stephanie, thank you so much for the passion and time you invest in educating your subscribers. I am 36, and just recently overhauled my makeup routine, and your channel has been a tremendous resource for me. I now feel so much more comfortable in my skin and confident and love what I see when I look in the mirror. I'm also a scientist in an industry where there is a lot of controversy and confusion about simple facts among the general public. I know how frustrating it can be when people just believe whatever they hear rather than taking the time to research and make their own decisions. I love that you are encouraging that practice here. ❤️

I think you did a really good job representing this palette and explaining to people. Wayne Goss tried saying the same thing, don't dig into the pallet, just barely tap your brush. People were just tap, tap, tapping ,swirl ,swirl ,swirling into the pallet and wonder why they were hitting pan. I'm guessing they are all use to digging into Morphe lol, just a little humor. I like Morphe shadows😉. Goss also said this is pure pressed pigment, so they have a lot of Fallout if you go in heavy. Like you said if you know how to use the pallet and don't go in with a heavy hand or heavy brush, it's a really good pallet. I forget who else said a lot of the colors can go muddy or gray because they do not color match, their opposites. It really makes me want to buy this palette. I go in with the really light hand with my makeup and build up. I really liked the abh Renaissance palette . I know this is a polar opposite of it. Before buying I would go in a see it in store first Tho.

I must say that Stephanie's review is totally honest. No BS at all. I'm chemist, got my hands on this palette and tested it before Stephani's review. So, I already had my own opinion about the palette and it totally matched with Stephani's. I think some people should appreciate her knowledge on cosmetics and remember that she is one of the most honest professionals I've ever seen in this KZbin world. I really believe she does not care about PR, pissing of any brand or whatever... if something is good in her opinion, is good... if something is bad, is bad... if something is shady she will show you. Against facts there are no arguments. That is it. Let us learn to appreciate who is really on our side, okie? Okie! :)

@TheFloridagirl097 жыл бұрын
Your reviews should be everyone's "go to". I watched a couple of "reviews" and saw people really aggressively using their brushes and mixing colors that like you said WOULD be muddy if combined. It's CRAZY how little i can tell you used of the product and how much it showed up. It's definitely a very pigmented shadow palette. This isn't a palette I'd buy because the colors aren't my style but I definitely appreciated a thorough and knowledgeable review of a product!!
@cornflkeboy17 жыл бұрын
I've watched several reviews on this palette and I have to say that I appreciated yours the most by far. Your attention to detail regarding ingredients, formulation, pricing, etc., is fantastic! It is nice to hear someone who understands that just because a product is performing differently does not mean it was a conspiracy on the part of the manufacturer. An acrylic paint performs differently than a water based paint, you can't expect to use the same techniques / performance with both.

Thank you! I make matte Eyeshadows and you have it spot on. Making matte Eyeshadows work is HARD! Pressing them too much won't make it blend, the binder will make it patchy and it won't swatch well.

I've seen tutorials where the shadow is packed on, then lightly blended... and when they do that, almost ALL the pigment falls off the lid! Even with primer. Then it just leaves a patchy, weird look. Especially AXIS seems to do this.

Pale Peach - I used the UD eden primer and applied it the way Stephanie Nicole showed and it was great, no fall out at all.
@studio_onyx7 жыл бұрын
I have also seen at least 5 tutorials where the colours oxidise before my very eyes, even just the first shadow on the lid changes, so I'm not talking about "muddying" of colours being blended together. Just straight out oxidisation. I know you're saying that's not the case for you, but I find it very hard to believe that this issue people are having is all a matter of "application preference". Either way, out of all the first impressions I've watched, if 1 in 10 tells me it works for them, that's really not enough for me to trust that it's going to work for me.
@laylaariel37517 жыл бұрын
Pale Peach as someone who's not a beauty influencer, and someone who used every different technique I know ... this palette just isn't good. The colors do oxidize, they easily are patchy, cube and electric barely show up, and the darker shadows skip and do not blend no matter how little you use. Don't waste your money.
@zoey335277 жыл бұрын
Not all of the shadows oxidase, the yellow shade was the only one that seemed to do that. Just like with certain foundations, for example the maybelline fit me (a yt beauty guru cult favorite) will oxidase on me but i have a coworker who loves it, does that mean her or the hundreds of youtubers who love it, their opinion isn't credible and that the product is shit? No, it just proves that everyone has different experiences and that not everyone is gonna have the same results with certain products. As for this palette working for her and not for the rest of the youtubers you watch, well ultimately she didn't recommend the palette to her viewers BECAUSE of all the polarized reviews, she advised we go try the palette ourselves and make our own educated decisions.

I have been using this palette for almost a week without any issues. The colors Cube and Electric are the only colors that I have to wet or use my fingers to apply on my eyes. I do think it comes to preferences and how some like to apply their eyeshadows. Also I believe that most deeper colors have to be applied carefully. I have the same issues with some of Kat Von D's deeper color eyeshadows. If you use too many together, they will muddy up on the eyes. I will continue to buy ABH products because I love the brand and have had nothing but a good experience 😎❤As always, thank you for being honest and informative with your review and demo😎👍🏼

I sincerely appreciate that! I've heard so much bad about this palette and I was completely unconvinced because so many are using it ways that I just wouldn't. Your methods are closer to what I would do especially working with high pigment colors and a palette that is known for being more delicate. Most people complaining and hating the pallet are people who will spray their brush with setting spray to get the best colour payout for shimmers. But won't lighten the pressure they use to apply shadows to get the best payout from the Subculture pallet. Not every product is made to be used to same way! What is so hard to understand?
@maiastoes7 жыл бұрын
this was the only helpful review ive watched on this palette. i got it in the mail a couple days and i completely understand the bad reviews if people with a lot of lid space want a nice smoky eye but i personally like it, i have semi hooded eyes and i only use the dark colors in the palette very close to my lashline by packing them on and smoking them out. i was a little confused by cube at first but i layered it over axis and it turned into a beautiful shimmery purple, cube can basically be used to transform any of the colors in the palette into different colors, which is pretty cool. all in all i think if you treat this palette like a palette full of loose pigment it works beautifully.
@lasenoradelacruz7 жыл бұрын
It seems to be too much work to make the palette work. It's full of pigment and it's high quality but if a person has to change the way they've been doing their makeup for years to accomodate to the product, it's not worth it in my opinion, specially for people who are always on a rush doing their makeup like I do. Great review as always!

I don't care for the palette much and don't plan on buying it, but as a makeup artist I always adapt my technique to different formulas... I have some eyeshadows that are ultra soft and pigmented and I pick up a tiny amount on my brush and then pat it on gently, build it up slowly. Some eyeshadows I can use a fluffy brush and pick up plenty of product and sweep it onto the lid with no issues. It's the same for a foundation. My Illamasqua skin base foundations require only a tiny amount of product for full coverage and I like to apply with a buffer brush, but with NARS sheer glow foundation I tend to use more of it with a damp beauty blender. Every product is different and I thought that it wasn't strange or new to adapt your technique depending on formula.
@leslieknope33947 жыл бұрын
sa x Not really. You put too much on accident then you mess up the whole thing. If you're in a hurry, you are not attentive to how delicate you put your brushes in and don't have time to do all the things you have to do to make the product work.

I am a person in the marketing and advertising field with an arts background, so I understand *NOW* that you have to threat this eye shadow palette as if you were working with actual pigments. But honestly why would you release a palette aimed at the general public that requires specific knowledge and product usage guidance in a format everyone is used to already? If the Subculture had been released with said instructions and disclaimers people wouldn't be so mad. Had the subculture been released as a PRO ARTIST shadow palette I would understand the brand coming for people not knowing how to use it. But the company has been doing a really poor job managing this, their PR people is missing out the point their costumers are making. Instead of coming off preachy and hammering people for not 'doing it right' and basically making their customers feel dumb, a simple acknowledgment of the problem and concerns would have been better. Also people complaining, more pigment and color payoff =/= better. You can like this palette because you know how to work it and know color theory, but honestly the average person don't have time for that. To me the biggest issue is how the company is managing this tbh.

littlemisstoes I have to agree. From a PR stand point the handling of the situation has been awful. I've seen the snarky comments from ABH employees and they are condescending and unprofessional. They should've made a statement, explained the palette better and offered refunds to those who disliked it. And they should have advised all ABH employees to not comment on the matter. First it was you don't know how to use this palette then it was a pressing issue then a batch issue and it's just like ok so what is the REAL issue here? I get that the owner is emotionally attached to their brand and products but it is simply just not how you handle complaints from your customers.
@Kimmaline7 жыл бұрын
So TOTALLY agree. I am really surprised by Stephanie's review, tbth. She keeps talking about preference, etc--but she put a clip in this video of Norvina saying "super easy to blend, of course". Most "KZbin/ Instagram makeup artists" or whatever you want to call them, pack on pigment for the most color payoff and cannot create looks with a cool toned palette as well. They're very 100% accustomed to warm shadows with massive color payoff. Cooler toned colors are also harder to coordinate with other colors.

So, I was waiting to hear your views on this to formulate an already pretty informed option on this palette. I really feel like Norvina feel into the trap of wanting to provide the MOST pigmented palette EVER because for some reason, we have come to believe that super pigmented = best quality or best application experience. I've stated more than once that some of the issues were more about color theory and application than the actual product. I think it would be a great idea if she did go back and reformulated this palette to be a big more consumer friendly in terms of application. Also, I think that it would probably benefit them as well as any other smaller company to have a panel of people whom they test their products with from all different types of people with different levels of experience. At the end of the day, ABH is a retail product sold to the everyday woman who enjoys / loves make-up. Ridiculously pigmented shadows are remarkable for editorial looks but let's face it, I don't want to have to gently tap and then with a feather like precision softly blend the color so that I don't look like bozo the clown. I love ABH, I love the colors and concept of the palette but do feel that it was a misstep in the formula. Will pass on the palette but I think that the backlash from certain influencers happen to be more sensationalism because it draws views than informed and unbiased criticism.
