Fwiw, if people think the moral message here is judgmental: the notion that parents should actually show affection and love to their children-as opposed to just providing moral instruction and a stable home life-was actually a radical idea at the time. Dr. Spock’s theories of child-rearing were the prevailing social norms: he advised parents to avoid demonstrative affection and hugging etc. So the ideas in this film reflect a shift in this way of thinking about parenting. The parents provided structure, stability, safety, etc. But they did not make any effort to develop intimate and loving meaningful relationships with the daughter. That is what Ed wood is trying to say-to a point. The idea is if you don’t see children as individuals and show them love, they will grow up to be delinquents.

meh. The moral of the story is that when raising kids you MUST be fully aware of who they hang around with, what they are doing ALL the time. You cannot expect to raise decent kids in absentia. It doesn't happen.
