One of the best MST3K episodes! The bio on wikipedia for Rondo Hatton shocked me. It's sad that this man actually experienced what it's like to go from being voted "most handsome boy" in high school to what you see in the film. Universal was so ashamed of exploiting him that they sold the rights when he died, which was before the movie was even released.

Sit right back, and you'll hear a tale... Back in episode 203 ("Jungle Goddess"), Joel and the bots performed a Honeymooners-like skit about what would happen if a jungle-born woman were transplanted to 1950s America. At the end, Joel introduces Crow as "Art Crow" (like Art Carney). Later, in episode 402 ("The Giant Gila Monster"), one of the drawings of Crow from a viewer is captioned as "Art." How Pearl knows this, or why she thinks he's "Art," I don't know.

So, confession... I actually like this movie. It has the standard weaknesses of B cinema, and the long explanation is pretty clumsy, but I find the story of a deformed man on a revenge spree finding a strange love with a blind woman compelling and interesting. I find the deaths tragic and the character of Rondo compelling. I mean, it's cheesy, and MatB riff it well, but this is one of those MST3k movies I would be fine watching on its own, one night in a drive in, my arm around a lady :)

After leaving high school, Rondo joined the Florida National Guard to pursue a military career. Rondo first saw battle in the Mexican border war and then in France in World War I. There, he was exposed to poison gas, was hospitalized with lung injury, and was subsequently medically discharged from service and consigned to a pension. Returning to Tampa, he took employment as a reporter for the Tampa Tribune, where he worked until 1936 when he moved to Hollywood. Sometime after his exposure to the poison gas, Rondo began to develop acromegaly, a slowly progressive medical condition, which brings mutations after a person has matured physically, and reached their adult height. Acromegaly (a disorder of the pituitary gland) causes deformation of bones in the head, hands and feet, and internal and external soft tissues. The body resumes production of growth hormone, but as the bone structure can no longer continue symmetric growth (as in giantism). According to all available sources, Rondo's acromegaly was a result of the poison gas he'd been exposed to, though it is almost always caused by a tumor on the pituitary. This was filmed in 1945. Rondo was going blind because of his exposure to the poison gas in WW1. Rondo died Feb. 2nd 1946 of a heart attack at the age of 51.

There's a line between "curmudgeon" and "High King of the Misanthropes" and I think the shopkeeper crossed it going 80 mph.

Anyone notice that Crow stops himself from singing the Partridge Family theme @ 10: 03 and sort of apologies to Mike for bringing it up.

They all tend to do that I think. They start singing something, stop and apologize. They only seem to do it when the others don't join in.

Its just so cliche. A deformed guy, falls in love with a blind girl (especially a hot one) and things don't go as planned, or it does. Hollywood just never seems to run out of cliches. :/

$2-3K for eye surgery. That'd just about enough to pay for a few of the diagnostic tests that'd be required today before they even considered the surgery.

Ok, my Mama told me of this show, and I looked it up. She said that she loved it, and so would I. She was right. I like the chicken part: "AH! the car's taken off with no driver! The Chickens have taken over!"

That gorgeous blind chick is Jane Adams. She played Vicki Vale in the 1949 BATMAN AND ROBIN. Didn't notice her steaming beauty in that stupid role. She mostly just did the Lois Lane oblivious shtick like, "Does Bruce Wayne know you have his car, Batman?"

Chicken of Tomorrow: no 7 - 9 week old broilers or fryers - which btw, is why its "buffalo wings" instead of drumsticks. The chicken they sell today is way too old to fry. Enjoy your "buffalo wings" suckers.

That may have been the worst grocery bag packing job I've ever seen. Let's bruise the hell out of the potatoes by putting the coffee on top of them, and then put the big loaf of bread UNDER the can of beans so that the can is practically falling out. Maybe the old curmudgeon is angry because he knows that Jimmy could run the place better than him.
