One of the best MST3K episodes! The bio on wikipedia for Rondo Hatton shocked me. It's sad that this man actually experienced what it's like to go from being voted "most handsome boy" in high school to what you see in the film. Sit right back, and you'll hear a tale... Back in episode 203 ("Jungle Goddess"), Joel and the bots performed a Honeymooners-like skit about what would happen if a jungle-born woman were transplanted to 1950s America. At the end, Joel introduces Crow as "Art Crow" (like Art Carney). Later, in episode 402 ("The Giant Gila Monster"), one of the drawings of Crow from a viewer is captioned as "Art." How Pearl knows this, or why she thinks he's "Art," I don't know.

After leaving high school, Rondo joined the Florida National Guard to pursue a military career. Rondo first saw battle in the Mexican border war and then in France in World War I. There, he was exposed to poison gas, was hospitalized with lung injury, and was subsequently medically discharged from service and consigned to a pension. Returning to Tampa, he took employment as a reporter for the Tampa Tribune, where he worked until 1936 when he moved to Hollywood. Sometime after his exposure to the poison gas, Rondo began to develop acromegaly, a slowly progressive medical condition, which brings mutations after a person has matured physically, and reached their adult height. Acromegaly (a disorder of the pituitary gland) causes deformation of bones in the head, hands and feet, and internal and external soft tissues. The body resumes production of growth hormone, but as the bone structure can no longer continue symmetric growth (as in giantism). According to all available sources, Rondo's acromegaly was a result of the poison gas he'd been exposed to, though it is almost always caused by a tumor on the pituitary. This was filmed in 1945. Rondo was going blind because of his exposure to the poison gas in WW1. Rondo died Feb. 2nd 1946 of a heart attack at the age of 51.

So, confession... I actually like this movie. It has the standard weaknesses of B cinema, and the long explanation is pretty clumsy, but I find the story of a deformed man on a revenge spree finding a strange love with a blind woman compelling and interesting. He's a pathetic man (meant in a sympathetic sense); his looks were normal until he developed that disfiguring hormone impairment.

@@indy_go_blue6048 Yeah, I did some research some montha back, too. Sad story. I'm glad he got to make a career for himself, though.

35 minutes in is my favorite part ever. The drug store guy. Hahaha!
Ok, my Mama told me of this show, and I looked it up. She said that she loved it, and so would I. She was right. I like the chicken part: "AH! the car's taken off with no driver! The Chickens have taken over!"

About the USDA short: during the depression, Roosevelt set a goal of making sure that a family would be able to eat at least 1 chicken a week. Here in Brazil, chicken is the protein saviour when the economy goes south (goes south ... hehehe) because the price is always affordable to a point where each family can get more than one chicken a week. BTW, those where the golden days for chickens and chicken lovers: free range chickens were the rule!

The Jack Benny references on this show are the greatest.
