An interesting piece of trivia: this movie/pilot actually made it to series and survived an incredible six episodes. Unfortunately for Pernell Roberts, he was replaced in the series with Lloyd Bridges whose characterization he would spoof ten years later in Airplane.

I'm surprised it made six episodes. This pilot took 3 possible episodes, 1. Congressmen stuck on a plane that might crash. 2. A grand heist to steal a lot of money. 3. A boy steals a plane but doesn't know how to fly it. What else is there? A terrorist episode I guess, maybe an episode dealing with a secret military plane... Pretty much it, end of show.

@sct9138 жыл бұрын
Although Airplane! borrowed heavily from the "airliner in peril" theme popular in movies since the early 1950s, there were no references to any scenes or dialogue from "San Francisco International Airport" in AIrplane! (Airplane II parodied space-themed movies and TV shows, and not aviation). Having a weakness for 1960s and 1970s disaster movies, I did a term paper for a college course on how aviation and space developments were reflected in popular film and TV. The paper summarized all the various references in Airplane!
@TheJasonbking8 жыл бұрын
It was largely based off a movie called Zero Hour! To the point some scenes were a shot for shot remake -- except Zero Hour was trying to be serious.
@HerrEllsworth8 жыл бұрын
The irony is that when this went to series, Pernell was replaced by Lloyd Bridges. Ten years later, he was asked to parody this in Airplane.
@AvengerII7 жыл бұрын
I think SST Death Flight (1977, TV movie) was also another uncredited remake of Zero Hour. Zero Hour clearly did inspire Airplane (which was a virtual remake like the second Psycho was of the Hitchcock classic) but there are a lot of similar plot points in SST Death Flight down to a disgraced ex-pilot, a doctor, a marriage/relationship in trouble, and breakout of illness on the plane flight. There's too much for it to be coincidental! Today, I think they're far more blatant about remakes. Also, when SST Death Flight was made in the 1970s there was already a trend to downplay B & W films and they were being shown far less (on TV) starting then than they were previously in the 1960s since TV had pretty much converted to color broadcast and the vast majority of homes in the US had color sets after the late 1960s. It may have been enough time passed where Zero Hour became a faded memory. (I've watched Airplane for years and NEVER heard about Zero Hour until recently... It just wasn't advertised well and doesn't get shown much on TV. I finally saw it offline this past weekend! It's much better than SST Death Flight which is pure crap but is played so straight it's unintentionally funny, too. It's also a sad film because you can see how much Dana Andrews has deteriorated and he looks very haggard in the movie.) I'm not saying SST influenced Airplane or that Airplane was a remake of it... These two films just happen to remake or spoof the same source, Zero Hour (1957). This happens all the time but people generally only remember the memorable remakes. Casablanca (1942, Humphrey Bogart) is the third version made of that story in film. Nobody remembers the previous two films!
@sct9136 жыл бұрын
An equally significant irony in Airplane! was the casting of Robert Stack as Captain Kramer. He had played Captain Sullivan in 1954's The High and The Mighty, which is generally recognized among film historians as the first of the "airliner in peril" themed films. And the scene in Airplane when the runway lights go out during final approach was taken directly from SST.

Yeah, the Upright Citizens Brigade didn't get their own cable show until a few years after this episode, and even then she wasn't really on everyone's radar until she was on network tv a few years after that.

12:22 During the late 1980's and early 1990's in movie theaters across the U.S. a short heartfelt PSA would be shown prior to the start of the film that explained the purpose of the Will Rogers Institute charity. The theater ushers would then slowly walk up the aisles expecting donations from the audience. It was always awkward and uncomfortable since no one ever gave any money!
@bob2732 Жыл бұрын

My obsessive brain is still bothered by inaccuracies in the riffing, like when Tom angrily asserts that the crate is held closed by the dummy screws, when in fact it *can't* be, because they're *dummy* screws. The crate is held closed by an internal lock secretly hidden in one of the screw holes, hence the whole point of the scene.

"Your in-flight movie is 'Fearless'" is one of the greatest riffs ever. I love how it's just slightly more oblique than referring to a movie like, say, "Airport;" they calibrated the joke perfectly, making you do just a tiny little bit of mental work to make the connection. They actually re-used this in "MST3K: The Movie," and I don't even remotely mind.

The comment at 10:29 reminds me of a field trip our 5th grade class took to Logan Airport in the early 1970s, which included a tour of the field. At that time, the outer service roadway on the field still crossed two of Logan's primary runways at grade. To this day, I still vividly recall how the roadway approaches at this intersection had traffic lights (presumably controlled by the tower) and huge signs reading "AIRCRAFT HAVE RIGHT OF WAY."

As a private pilot I see a bit of a procedural issue in the opening. The tower clears them to land on "runway 1 Right, winds 2-8-zero at one-niner", meaning the winds were blowing from magnetic heading 280, west to east. This means the plane is lining up to land with a direct 90-degree crosswind instead of landing on the more obvious runway 28 (left or right, take your pick) which would face them directly into a headwind, exactly what you want for landing. The two Runway 28s are considerably longer than the two Runway 1s which would have given the plane more room to have a landing gear malfunction. Their presumed "emergency" was faulty landing gear so it's not like they were out of fuel and had to land immediately so they had time to line up for runway 28. If there are any commercial pilots out there who can provide a reasonable explanation, let me know. (Wait...were the tower controllers in on the gag??)
