A lot of MST3K's charm came from its low-budget style and aesthetic. I mean, at this point in the show's run, they might actually have had enough money to do an effect like that but they just didn't anyway. That kind of low-budget cheesy charm that fits in with the movies they watch and really made the show unique kinda got lost with the revival. It's really a shame.

I've never had a chance to see this before. Thanks for posting it! I actually didn't discover this show until '98, because I lived in a town with a crappy cable system that didn't carry Comedy Central or Sci-Fi. My dad had satellite and I would watch this at his house on weekends. So until recently, I had never even seen a Joel episode. I like Mike better because he's the one I'm most familiar with, but I've enjoyed some of the Joel eps I've seen. Both are good in their own ways.

I could never get into MST3K during Joel's years. I started watching occasionally after the movie came out and started watching regularly during the last two seasons. When I later tried to watch eps. from Joels run I could get through them but I really missed Mike. I wonder if I would have liked Joel better if I had given him a better chance years earlier.

JaguarCats Joel Hodgson described the character as being of "average intelligence", and that he was written that way to create both an interesting dynamic between he and the bots and explain why he didn't take some chances to escape/help the others escape.

Gypsy is responsible for the "higher functions" of the ship, and thus doesn't have a lot of free time. Also, Crow and Servo are very skeptical of having her ability to join in the heckling. However, she does try to watch the movie in episode #412 (Hercules and the Captive Women), but leaves after only a couple of jokes when she realizes just how bad the movies are.

Alot of people didn't like Mike as much as Joel. Personally, I view Joel as a "father" and Mike as an Older brother figure. Don't get me wrong, I love Micheal, but he'll never fill out Dad's shoes.
