Oh, you kids! You haven't lived till you've had to backcue and play 78's on air! The Bangs, later Bangles, were first on their own Downkiddie label, then on IRS/A&M from 1980-82. They were buried there because IRS had the Go-Go's at the time and they got all the attention. So they moved to CBS in '83 and were directed to a more pop sound. It worked, though so-called purists didn't think so. Remember, at that time there were not some 50 different basic formats, as there are now, and if you wanted on radio, the parameters were quite different. They put out three good albums, had a couple of #1 singles and a few more to hit the top-10. It worked because they could really play and sing, and yes, CBS decided it could market Susanna Hoffs as a lead singer, which the girls let happen for awhile. But if you look at Bangles albums, all four of them had leads on various songs. They are back at it, minus Michael, who left for the second time in 2005, and are re-releasing some of that early material on their website.

I was so happy that they got back together one more time (1999-2005) and generated one more album between the four of them. I am sure it grated with them yet again that their hit came from not their songwriting but Elvis Costello. Even on their other hit, Something That You Said (bigger hit than this song) it was Co-written by the primary Go Go Songwriter and keyboardist/guitarist - Charlotte Caffe with Susanna Hoffs and Vicki Peterson. More of a problem - note the spotlight in this production is on Susanna Hoffs. They started as four equal people and Susanna emerged as the leader more often than not which keeps causing tension among the four unfortunately.

Somebody made the big mistake to choose a Ballade for the first Comeback Single...and not this song here
@kyachdistent13014 ай бұрын
@@ullischuster1263 Er, no, 1st of all 'Something That You Said' is more chill out and mid-paced than ballad (that'd be the almost wretched 'I Will Take Care Of You'-the utter worst candidate for single issue of the lot) and made the Top 40, no mean feat when (a) in their so-called heyday, not enough people/DJs were making them all do that and (b) all of them are the "wrong side of 40 (even just before it is not good enough) for a rubbish, ageist, sexist (only to proper females) industry that in the long space of time they were away for, changed completely for the worst. It's all about garbage, wake up, don't you know how it works, shite flop 40 radio is only TAYLORED-so to effing speak for the garbage of the 90s-today, with only the boring old lags like slagdonna, Elton John, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys,Rolling Stones, all those that always get acclaim given priority at all. The comeback simply fell into the old tired trap of old-simply prioritising songs Susanna is lead on for singles. 'Doll Revolution' (Tear Off Your Own Head)'-and yes we do, was next single joint with that worst choice I mentioned. so once again, all the other girls miss out, and on this album it isn't Susanna who has the strongest songs; it's not like the album they long-paused on before returning where Everything (geddit?) was beautiful, and just as well cos 3/4 off that were Susanna led as usual.. On "Doll Revolution", all Micki's choices are perfect singles, as are Debbi's 'Lost At Sea' and 'Here Right Now', and Vicki's 3 that aren't 'The Rain Song'. Always, always, do they prioritise Susanna's songs, nothing ever changes, and they just let it happen. They should know that unlike once they made it in the 80s, there's no singles market, no play, no nothing, so with only 2 chances to get a single of each album if that, you gotta get it right! They don't-if the song's Susanna's, which it has always been. And no, there's no way the title track would have got higher than 'Something'-that would attract even less play on non-existent radio. Radio 2 did make 'Something' single of the week, so that's Something!

I think that they wanted their family time. There really was no rush for a comeback. They could have continued writing new material and had a reunion tour years later. Saddest thing is that micki was not ready to retire and had so much more to give. I would have been happy if she retired straight after finishing a tour. For me that would have been her final curtain call. To suddenly quit and then vanish completely is really heart breaking especially as many bands have stated that it's more enjoyable the second time around. Fun Factoid: The lyrics to "Paperback Writer" fit perfectly meter-wise in this song. Bridges included.

What a appropriate song for doll selling conventions.

I really wonder if, by the time they made this in 2003, they had just thrown up their collective hands and said "Yeah, l guess Susanna still gets to do lead vocal on all of our hits". LOL! I mean, other than Liverpool and the way-more-obscure Be With You, Susanna got all the big songs. To some of the more casual fans, she IS the Bangles. Those people are really missing out, though, big time. Every single one of the Fem Fab Four was an essential element. Sure, they can get by these days with just the three of them, but there will always be something crucial missing without Michael there too. Cheers!

Joy K - The measurement of “success” can vary for different people. The other three were/are wives and mothers and collectively felt a work/life balance couldn’t include extended tours as Michael felt was needed. They’ve been going the pace they want to go, including solo projects and Michael, oddly, has retired to a bohemian lifestyle, out of the public eye, and doing what she wants to do as well.

They are not in their 20's anymore. This song 16 years old. I think they just want to play the music without the (antics?). Saw the Feb 2019 clip of them in concert and they sound fine. Just like any other roughly 60 year old's would be. Nice to see them play and relive old memories.

Too bad this reunion of all the four Bangles lasted such a short period of time. Michael left because Susanna and Debbi didn't want to tour as much (because of their families) as Michael wanted.
