Mt Fox Route - West Coast, South Island, New Zealand
Whilst this is an epic hike, there’s no question about it - it’s a toughy!
Right from the get go it’s steep. Very steep! It’s a pretty well marked track where you’ll find yourself climbing over endless tree roots and boulders… The kids thought it made the hike more adventurous!
It might be a short hike but with it being so steep, it still takes quite some time. You’ll see!
Traversing through thick native bush until you reach the bush line - the track is quite sheltered and then exposed further up the mountain.
We started the hike at 6:30am so as to get up to the lookout before the clouds typically start rolling in off the ocean late morning. Well worth the early rise to see these epic views!
At the end of the day, the hike is as challenging as you want it to be - but don’t underestimate the descent! Your quads will be aching for a few days!
A post hike dip in the ocean near Haast on our way home was just what the body wanted after a big day in the hills.
Other than an abundance of native birds along the trail we didn’t see anyone else all day!
It’s not easy, but totally worth it!
