Yes, wheelies can be a problem with pretty much any bike that doesn't have a dry sump setup! Pulling the front wheel near 10 o'clock pulls the oil away from the pickup. This causes major oil starvation, and can eventually cause the motor to blow. Dry sumps aren't affected by lean angle. Standard sump may starve the engine from oil at steep angles or G forces when oil shifts to one corner, especially when riding wheelies!!

I have a theory on these failures…. The oil feed is from the end of the crank and is putting a hydraulic side load on the crank and forcing it over and eventually into the counterbalance shaft. Might be wrong but after watching the first videos on it, this is the best explanation on what might force a crank over far enough to collide as there aren’t any other lateral forces on it.

I had exactly the same dilemmas, I consulted with my wife and finally a month ago I decided to take it to a professional garage of the Yamaha importer. We rebuilt the engine with original parts. It cost a lot of money, but for me it was the preferred option. The service is over and this coming Thursday I should have it back.
