I've been revisiting riding position, and it's been revolutionary. Early on, I was trying too hard to work the bike(wheel lifts and hops over small obstacles), but focusing on a balanced position has made unweighting sufficient since I'm not jumping off my pedals now. Videos like yours help me get it dialed even more, so thanks!

Good video and thanks! I learned from a mountain bike class the 4 basic steps to successful riding: 1. Knees over toes 2. Stay calm on the bike 3. When you turn, put your outside foot down 4. Look ahead as you're going.
@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, thanks for your comment. Outside foot down is not generically true... It will limit your cornering ability greatly - my advice is to keep them level as a default position and to adjust as needed. I actually have a video for it, kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6bIdKttZteSbrs The front knee should always be behind the toes, otherwise you can’t brace :-) Look ahead - great - but where? :-) I always like to question generic tips, as it’s important for you to understand the content. Only then you can apply them to the changing conditions of the terrain. And that’s what we do when we’re riding. Only then We can stay calm :-)

Very good! Funny, in my last couple of rides, I have been trying to be mindful of, and improve, my body position. Just yesterday I tried to make sure I was in the position you describe (hinged at the hips, legs nearly straight). I have long noticed that I tend to be in a much deeper crouch than I need be for only moderate terrain. I was riding nearly everything like it was very steep and bumpy, which is VERY tiring on the legs. Pretty sure this is a manifestation of fear; that crouch feels safe. And it HAS saved me from an OTB or two. But the fatigue it creates if held too long makes one tired and sloppy.... Yesterday I tried to stay VERY much on top of this issue, and was very happy with how much faster I rode, with quicker reaction times and far less fatigue.
@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire2 жыл бұрын
Hi Cory, thank you so much for sharing! I agree so much and it is such a common error, as the crouch makes us feel safer... Much love, Roxy

Starting the conversation at the feet and ankle joints is perfect. I would add only one thing, and that is what's happening with the riders toes. When a rider becomes overly nervous about a situation, what tends to happen is the rider becomes rigid and stiff then, subconsciously, starts making a fist with their toes inside their shoes. Once that happens, all ankle mobility is out the window and control along with it. Coach the rider to shake it out, take a few deep breaths, and actively move (wiggle) the toes inside their shoes. Wiggling toes will soften the ankle joint. Also, terrain selection could be an issue. Return to a gentler trail if necessary. 👍

This is so true I have heard you call this the Y position I used it for the first time on my 60k ride it worked really well it seemed to help me to stay in position to did notice a lot more grip my body did not flop around shifting my weight around the bike which aloud me to go quicker through some technical trails . Feeling in control for the first time since I cracked my 10 ribs because did not have an understanding of body position at all. Your video has been very helpful indeed even how to use the brakes and learning to modulate them instead of grabbing them I have stayed from jumps as I have to learn the craft of the bunny hop . All seems to be going a lot better this time round since I started watching your videos .. Looks like may have to buy you a coffee after all … Great content Roxy fantastic informative videos.

@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire No but I shall as I feel I am really starting to work things out with your breaking of things down into byte size chunks and yes it really paid of from the get go. My biggest fear at the moment from my riding is while I am going to the same trail so I remember what is where and what is coming up. I would like to take turns with the confidence of knowing how much I can keep grip in small burns with which turn into switch backs . Meaning I can’t quite work out how much lean and the body position to create grip. I also have set up using a shock whizz to suit my style of riding which really has helped a lot . I could not believe how I felt locked in though by using this Y position I could feel when I started to loose this position as well as where and when I had to talk to myself to get back into this position Roxy got to tell you it really really worked 🤗 I was so stoked I’m 62 I held my own on this simple exercise it was awesome we both have E-bikes so they are a beast to handle the Manual is very hard for me to do. As I’m only 68.3 Kilos fairly fit but just can’t seem to muscle these E-bikes the way I would like to. But Hey with your shippers of Videos can’t wait to learn to modulate the brakes like you have shown us how to do I was surprised how little but effective pressure it is when using your technique. Sorry for rambling on here but I really have learnt so much from you then the other videos as this time things are working and best of all I have not fallen of my new E-Bike . Thankyou Roxy once I feel more confident on the trails with no jumps I’m going of to hit the small jumps at this beginner jump park . PS maybe better go looking at what I should somewhere here first. 🤣🤣 Oh well back to bed 🛌 it’s nearly 1am here😊👍

Not sure if my ankle wasn’t strong enough or if it was the foot position on the pedal but I badly sprained my ankle on a drop following your advice to put the ball of my pinky toe over the axle. It was on a 2 foot drop that I’ve done a dozen times before. I decided to ride with the adjusted foot position to see if it improved my riding but it didn’t turn out well. I should have listened to my own body because it felt like my foot was too far back on the pedal and in doing so the impact hurt my ankle. Providing this feedback as a cautionary tale for others.
@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire Жыл бұрын
Hi Mag, wow, I am SO sorry to hear about your pain. The exact foot position differs from person to person, especially with big feet the position will most probably be more mid-foot. Agreed: ALWAYS listen to your own body, because it is the most intelligent being you will meet in your life. If you change anything about your riding, never try it out on drops and airtime directly - because the cost of error is always too high... In my experience working with thousands of riders over many years, I have never experienced a strained ankle caused by riding this foot position, therefore I think that the cause of your strain may not be related to the change in foot position - but it is impossible for me to tell without having worked with you and knowing your history. Thank you for sharing your experience and I am sending you my warmest GET WELL SOON wishes! P.S. - maybe this video will also help to clarify some doubts: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJjHlZidq6mpsLc Roxy

"Elbows out a little bit" kinda reminds me of bench press maybe telling that would make it easier to learn. And also chest muscles are way stronger than shoulders and using them would be easier Like doing an opposite bench press on the handlebar

It's a bit surprising (and informative) to see how much weight is distributed to the rear wheel. I'd have thought that at 11:46 the weight would have been closer to 50/50.

Can you elaborate on what you're doing wrong in the "How NOT to" example at 9:15, besides "public toilet position" and being a "passenger"? Too far back, legs bent - crouched, instead of standing tall. Anything else? When you don't show the stance side-by-side with the "correct" position, or call out the components of the bad stance, it's difficult for the viewer to know what to look out for and avoid.

Hi Roxy, for starters great video! I went lately to MTB basic course offered by the DAV and I've noticed few differences and I'm curious if you can explain those parts a bit more: Balance - the trainer said that we shouldn't lean at all on the handle bar and the grip should as loose as we held eggs in our hands. Is it always the case? Heel placement - he said to keep rather in the middle because that doesn't strain muscles as much. Was it because it was just a basic course and it assumed people have weak muscles? I would really appreciate your answer given that it's already a couple of years old video :)
@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire Жыл бұрын
Hey @krzmi thank you for your comment and the question. I am guessing you’re German? I have a free Trackstand course for you on www.roxybike.online - if you want 😊 Also, I’ll gladly answer your questions. 1. Egg-Hands: 😊 I used to teach that, because that’s the way I learnt it years ago in a course for instructors. BUT then I started feeling into my riding and talking with pro coaches and pro riders and noticed, that once the terrain gets trickier, if we hold the handlebar too loosely, it gets pulled out of our hands (in German: es verschlägt dir den Lenker), which is SUPER dangerous. So I looked at what’s REALLY the case and then noticed that YES - the loose grip CAN be used as a tool at the beginning to practice the solid stance, BUT it’s important to add that this is NOT the goal when you’re out riding trials. The goal is to say evenly weighted through the feet with no WEIGHT on the handlebar, but that doesn’t automatically mean you’re not GRIPping it decisively. Foot position. I have a a video about foot placement, which I’ll link in the next comment. The midfoot stance is more economic, BUT you’re loosing the finesse of the ankles, which are essential for control. I’ll link another video for that in the next comment, too. Hope this helps? Would love to hear back from you und viel Spaß beim Trackstand Kurs dir.

@@krzmi Hey Krzmi, then I'll respond in English - then everyone can profit from this. I’m setting up my new bike. My position still does not feel right. When I get into the “right position” I still feel I don’t have enough travel in my arms when going over drops. I have max spacers in and my reach is by formula dialed in. What do you think of using a 35 or 40 mm riser bar vs the 25 I have now. It will not effect my reach but will bring my hands up a bit and possible give me that extra suspension in my arms?
@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire2 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, unfortunately I cannot say anything about bike set up without seeing you on the bike. However, usually it's not the bike, but the rider who has the most impact on "body suspension". :-) But of course, do try out different rider bars and see if they feel better for you.

@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire3 жыл бұрын
😀 LG Roxy
@mario_me_Obelix3 жыл бұрын

Love your content. I bought and am studying a book with a bunch of the same principles you teach. I am working on my trail / low hinge position and light hands. Not easy after decades of incorrect habits. QUESTION, do you have any video material to address those of us who ride hardtails with older quality suspension seatposts? I don't want to give it up to get a dropper post. I have 5 1/4 " wide seat and slid it as far fwd as possible. At one time droppers were not invented and racers kicked ass with speed and skills. Imho it would make an interesting video. Thanks
@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire2 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, happy you are finding my content helpful. Which book is that? I love book recommendations 😍 Yes, I’m sure it would be great idea, too. However, technique has changed just like bikes have changed and the tips I give actually require you to be able to drop your weight and allow the bike to move beneath you… So to be honest, I think you’ll make it MUCH easier on yourself and have much more fun on a newer bike with a dropper and a more modern geometry. Older bikes do need a different technique to avoid losing the front and therefore some of my tips will not always work. But play around with them and choose those, that do 😊😊😊 ~ Roxy

@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire Hi Roxy, I didn't want to put a book title here bc it could detract from your succe$$. But you asked so here ya go. "Mastering Mountain Bike Skills" 3rd Edition" by Brian Lopes and Lee McCormack. It is amazing that many of my motocross and road biking skills don't all work on the trails...lol. After I get some of the fundamentals automatic, I may seek you out for fine tuning. I upgraded 3 months ago from a 2002 quality 26" hardtail to a modern 2021 Fuji 29er hardtail. Night and day better in every way. I kept my Cane Creek long travel suspension seatpost bc it is so amazingly comfortable. I could have bought a full suspension bike but I wanted a 3x in front and to own only one bike for lots of road miles too. I could replace it with a dropper but my butt and back likes this...for now I know great riders from before droppers were invented could kick ass on my bike. I just want to safely get better, have fun, and stay fit in the beautiful outdoors.

@@robert50173 Hi Robert, oh no, don't worry, I don't see awesome colleagues as "competition" - I think there is room enough for everyone! And the more of us there are, the quicker the mtb sport advances! I think we can all learn from one another. Yes, I know the book and it's really good. It's a classic 🙂 Oh yes - so true. It's amazing how many skills DO and how many skills do NOT transfer 😅 Congrats on the new bike! So much has becomes easier, hm? Have you tried a dropper, yet? Sounds great! Enjoy practicing!

@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire The geometry makes me "feel" safe going faster etc. However, that is dangerous without the basic skills. It is like putting a driver from a Honda civic into a off road Baja race 4 wheel drive. I only tried a dropper in a showroom on a full sus bike. I know the principle...logically...but I don't know if it is worth the trade off for me. I do a lot of paved/gravel long rides on my one bike. Might be a vid topic for someone. 🤔
