I’ve been training with Kevin for sometimes now and my confidence it’s skyrocket, I was coming back from a bad crash when I’ve started to work with him and I can only say that he was a blessing for me , my skills are 10 times better and I can’t tell enough about how skillful coach Kevin is. We became very good friends and I’m very happy that you can share his ability with your viewers.

Great video! Riding with Kevin is a trip, his stoke and skill are legendary. He has definitely elevated my riding and i get more outa his lessons every time we ride! Also @ 9:12 LMAO, you almost loose it hard and Kevin yells, “YAAAAAH” (I know the feeling lol) he gets so stoked when u push it to the edge and then recover it! As Kevin often reminds me the difference between an amateur and a pro isn’t the lack of shit going bad, shits always gonna go bad, but rather having the skills and experience to recover and ride er out!

Nice! I’ve been waiting for you to drop this video ever since you mentioned a coaching session. I decided last year to bite the bullet and drop cash on a private lesson from SS. But it really was a huge disappointment. Just essentially was this guy hot dogging down Party Wave/Westridge having me follow him. There was zero coaching and in fact he actually cause me to wreck by stopping in the middle of a berm section on Westridge (found out later I’d broken three ribs). The whole thing super turned me off to the idea of ever doing that again. To top it off that was my last day at Summit for the season. So first day back this year I couldn’t get the confidence crusher out of my head. Can I inquire as to how long Kevin spent with you three? I’ve got a buddy traveling to come ride Summit with me, and this looks like something we might consider. If I can get over my squeamishness at dropping that kind of cash given my last experience.

Dag...sorry to hear you had a bad experience. And yeah...sounds like you got stuck with a non-coach. I haven't hired a Snow Summit coach but I can only hope that person was an exception. Sorry to hear you got hurt. Kevin spent the entire day with us. He generally organizes a group of 4-5 people to keep the prices reasonable for everybody. I paid a little more to make it just me, Kelly, and Katy because I really wanted everybody to get the most out of it. Check the description for his website info. He's a good dude and will work with you on scheduling...especially if you can hit it during the week. Tell him I sent ya! 🤘🏽

I realized only a few months ago my rear shock had a rebound adjustment 🤦🏻‍♂️. I feel like I have my suspension pretty “dialed-in”. But I noticed I get better pop on jumps when I move my to “trail” setting (Fox CTD). Descend setting feels plush but a little wobbly over rocks like I need a tad more feedback. Do I need more air pressure or slower rebound? Excellent tips on body position! Great save in that turn!
@mtb_alan
@mtb_alan 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! These are all good questions. I wish I could answer them but there are many additional factors to consider. If you can, get a hold of a pair of Shockwhiz devices. Hopefully you have a local bike shop that rents them. See my vid on it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4OxlZ2XqdSEgrs

I just got a new bike and I want to get my suspension felling good I just hit 650b for my first time last week but I almost went over the bars I have never had that happen to me so I kept going up and the same thing would happen almost going over that bars I grip was lose so I thought it was that but when I fixed it I had only one lap to go when I hit 650b again i did not go over the bar and I also case the shit out of it I run a coil in the back with high rebound so maybe that is the problem but when I press down it does not look fast that is why I keep it fast
@mtb_alan
@mtb_alan 4 жыл бұрын
Dang...sounds like you need to spend some time tuning it. The main things I learned about suspension on this day was that balanced sag between the fork and shock is of primary importance. And that rebound and compression damping is all relative to how much spring force there is, e.g. 7 clicks of HSR with 160psi is different than the same clicks with 185psi. Of course with a coil, we'd be talking different springs.

QUESTION- Excellent vid btw. So, when is it appropriate to lean the bike? I had a lesson at Trestle a couple summers ago, and the coach had me leaning the bike in berms, especially multiple berm sections, because it made transitioning between them faster and smoother, which seemed to work well. Is leaning With the bike more appropriate with longer continuous berms? Thanks Alan.
@mtb_alan
@mtb_alan 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Johnny! Good question. I was skeptical of Kevin's advice but I had to take into account his credentials as a pro racer and part-time tester for Fox...and I think Santa Cruz. But the proof is in the pudding right? So working with Kevin, I learned this: Staying aligned with the top-tube (i.e. not leaning the bike over) is definitely better suited for turning in berms...both short and long. Have a look at the section when I'm in those dual-slalom berms (4:10). The berm is there to support you in the turn so that you don't need to lean the bike over. If you've got the minimum needed speed for the berm, you should be able to stay aligned with the top tube and *use the berm*. When it comes to correcting in the berm, I used to always lean the bike over, but I learned that you can get lower and more forward to sharpen the turn. Once I got use to this movement, I found it to be a lot more stable. I also found I could generate more speed out of the turn. (6:04) And to be clear, I am still leaning the bike over as needed, but that more intermediate technique is now firmly supported by the more fundamental skill of staying aligned and using the berm. And of course, leaning the bike over is much better suited for flat turns when you don't have the berm there to support you. Hope that helps!

The elbow position is something I picked up years back riding enduro motorbikes... to put a time frame on it, we used the term "The Ultimate Warrior' stance... (imagine a WWF wrestler standing at the ropes reaching down, elbows out, and bench pressing the ropes...) Whenever I teach someone to ride (absolute beginner basics) 1 show them 2 things... 1: get them to drop their elbows while sat.. I grab front wheel and shake it, their whole body shakes... Get them to lift their elbows, I shake the wheel, their shoulders are steady as is their body... "Thats what the track does to your body" and 2... ride slow in a straight line in the gravel... jam on the front brake.. Hey look your still alive... Now keep doing it and see how far you can skid before putting your foot down.. then try releasing the brake instead of putting the foot down... Now you have feel for the front and how to release the brake to catch a slide... (and then there's the 'trail riders stomp'... where you loose the front, foot off the peg, kick your heel into the ground and back onto the peg... gives you a split second more upright long enough for the tyre to get grip.. (This saved a friend in a road race (Cemetery Circuit - Wanganui NZ) where riders lean over at the end of a straight over railway tracks... He lost the front, without thinking kicked the ground.. went straight instead of round the corner, but stayed on the bike.. This works for the MTB's on slippery rutts etc but not so much in corners where an MTB looses it so quick the stomp just turns into a step off... still better than face grinding to a halt.

Man can you go over how you even started getting into jumps? Theres just that big mental block of "what if this what if that happens?" and it doesnt help the hospital ERs are so busy these days hahah
@mtb_alan
@mtb_alan 4 жыл бұрын
Ha! Good point about ERs. I will have to do a video on it when I have progressed a bit more. But I would say start by getting really good at pumping anything you can on the trail. Look for any little dip or contour or whatever. Feel how you can get speed out of that. And then start looking for stuff that has a bit of a face or a lip...or even just a bump and then use your pump on the way in and stay in your attack position on the way out. And if you can find small tabletops especially ones with a really mellow backside/landing, those are great to start getting the feel. Tabletops are really forgiving. Have a look at the points at 9:48 and also see how in Katy's before clip, she's just landing on top of the jump (not clearing it) and is fine. Hope this helps!
@50nollieman
@50nollieman 4 жыл бұрын
@@mtb_alan Oh man thanks for taking the time to type all that out! Im definitely gonna try to pump more small dips. Time to hunt for little table tops hahah thanks a bunch Alan from another Alan! :D
@mtb_alan
@mtb_alan 4 жыл бұрын
No worries. And yes...I think the *foundation* of jumping happens naturally. Once you start getting more air, you gotta start building on that foundation, and some coaching or at the very least, a ton of GMBN vids helps. I do kinna suggest GMBN because especially Neil breaks it down really cleanly. If you can't get a coach, also consider checking out something like the Ryan Leech's online courses. 👍🏽

Can you share what exactly he did to the suspension? I have been considering a new bike but maybe I just need to tweak my suspension.
@mtb_alan
@mtb_alan 4 жыл бұрын
Sure. We increased the shock pressure by 25lbs., opened LSC by 6 clicks, opened HSR by 4 clicks. Increased the fork pressure by 3lbs., opened up LSC by 13 clicks, opened HSC by 9 clicks, opened LSR by 1 click, opened HSR by 1 click. But the most important thing you can do is make sure your sag is correct and use your damping circuits to make sure that when you bounce on your bike, the front and back of the frame are moving in sync with each other. Hope that helps!

How do you figure out which way to turn your bars for a whip if you've never done it before?
@mtb_alan
@mtb_alan 4 жыл бұрын
Great question. Find a small jump you are really comfortable on and after your front wheel leaves the lip, turn it one way just a little. See how that feels. Then try the other way. Most people are more comfortable one one side. Then you will find that the more you turn your bars, the more your tail will come out. Just make sure to straighten your bars before you land. Keep in mind that I’m just a beginner with whips, so take my advice at your own risk. 😆

Super sick vid my man! In changing your body position a bit did you experience any new muscles fatigue? When I rode my demo on a large Nomad I was able to change my body position up a bit too. Having a longer reach I was able to lay onto the bike more (maybe not what I was supposed to do). I don't think my suspension was dialed too well because my fork felt harsh as hell and my shock was boggy and seem to bottom out quick. Combining a harsh fork and leaning more onto the bike made for super sore elbows (ongoing issue in the gym). It was a trip though to ride a bigger bike, felt like I was on a semi truck hauling down the highway (compared to my 09 Med Nomad). I think the demo suspension settings gave me a poor assessment of that new Nomad (boggy and harsh). I'm dying to have a pro help me with my suspension set up and riding for that matter. What did Kevin say about your stack height? Curious how Paul's recommendations carried over to your new adjustments. You handled that rear wash on that wood berm like a champ! I think going over on that thing could have made for the gnarliest crash ever! Getting a coach is a total bucket list goal and now one that is going to be bumped up on the list. You guys looked like you hit/felt good gains. Super dope vid man.

Dag! That's too bad about the Nomad. It def was not set up right. But you were totally right to lay onto it more. The newer geo on those bikes (and most modern MTBs) like it better when you push more into the front-center. Also, I do know that in my Bronson, I had to add a volume spacer in the shock to get it as poppy as I wanted. It sacrificed how well the rear handles up chunk, but I am cool with that. re: stack height. Ah...we didn't get that far into the setup. He did lower Katy's a bit. I am thinking about taking the stack down 5mm though now that the front feels more supportive. And yeah...I've seen some serious wipeouts on that berm. I do think the only reason I slid was because I hit the brakes a little too hard in the dirt and carried some onto the wood with me. That was ice. But yeah man...it was actually a good but hard day. I have never been that tired from riding the bike park. But as you suggested, being in a different position and working the brain more to learn new stuff took it out of me. With getting lower, I def felt it more in my triceps. But my legs were all right. I do CrossFit son! 😆

Heck yeah! Glad you dug it. One thing that I didn't say in the vid is that the majority of your weight should be in your feet. So maybe like 25% hands and 75% feet. I hope that helps, but take that advice at your own risk. And really...you'd be amazed how much difference a day with someone like Kevin can make.

When you are saying “centered on the bike”, are you not opening your hips into the turns? Every coach I have ever worked with talks about opening hips into the turns.
@mtb_alan
@mtb_alan 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Every coach teaches that, and it's a useful technique. But knowing how to get low and into the front of bike is a more fundamental technique that I can layer hip movement onto. (4:38)

Hey @MTB ALAN, I was up there this weekend both days and I had a question for ya. I run the same settings on my GoPro hero 8 black and do color grading in daVinci resolve. Do you find it getting washed out a lot with contrast recording on sunny days at summit like this passed weekend? Even with color grading it still looks blown out. Just wondering if you deal with the same when editing.
@mtb_alan
@mtb_alan 4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm...I haven't been getting washed out footage. I do seem to get more blown out moments when going from shadow to light though. What adjustments do you make in your color grade?
@mangler2132
@mangler2132 4 жыл бұрын
MTB ALAN I keep an eye on my scopes and adjust the high’s low’s and mid tones, trying to keep them all within range of not hitting absolute white and absolute black. Then usually play around with the saturation and sharpness ever so slightly. The last video I posted was from yesterday. If you got a minute to scope it out maybe you can see if there’s anything you’d change? I appreciate the reply dude!
@mtb_alan
@mtb_alan 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Tyler. I see what you mean. I am thinking that the issues are coming from your color grading. I use Lumetri color inside Premiere Pro and in there I turn up the saturation and "vibrance" a bit and also turn black down a little. The scopes are a good reference, but maybe try keeping the whites and blacks further away from the absolutes. Also, is there a setting to make the color grading dynamic? If you have that turned on, maybe try it turned off. I'm saying that because the shifts from shadow to light in your vid seems more extreme than I normally see in GoPro footy. Hope that helps!
@mangler2132
@mangler2132 4 жыл бұрын
@@mtb_alan Right on dude! I'll definitely take a look for grading dynamic, still pretty new to all the editing stuff but i'll poke around and see, might make the investment to premiere pro. I'll definitely keep the whites and blacks in check more, they are pretty close to absolutes. Thanks again for the tips! Hope to see you up there at the park. Keep up the good vids I've learned a lot from the in depth content you bring. cheers! - Tyler
