Yeah yeah it's been a while..
I found another non deserving piece of scrap at the curb with a minor issue 2 miles from home. A 22 year old YardMan snowblower with a broken auger gear case.
An issue that could have been avoided if correct shear bolts were used.
The video is long.. but the repair should take about the same time, I did not want to leave out any detail as it only makes complaints..
Parts used:
918-0123A housing left
918-0124A housing right
710-0890 shear bolt kit 2014 and before
Permatex Ultra Grey RTV sealant
Valvoline GL-4 gear lube
By the way mark the augers before removing them, at the end you will notice they are on the wrong sides, had to switch sides the next day. Thanks to a keen viewer..;0.
Thanks for watching!

Excellent video - My mother in-law is visiting in a couple of weeks while she is here I will spend a few days hiding out in the garage taking my snowblower apart to put some Lithium grease or anti-seize on the auger shafts.

I pulled in a chunk of asphalt hidden under the snow at the end of the driveway. I ordered a new auger to replace the broken one. I poured a coffee before I started and decided to check youtube for pointers. I looked at a few but yours was the best done and most helpful to me. I have fixed a lot of my equipment and am pretty good at, but there is always something more to learn and you were a big help. It helped me avoid going about it the wrong way. AND......it was 12 degrees in the garage/shop so watching your video was a good reason to come in the house and warm up. Thanks!!!

Good job on the video, clear descriptions and part explanations and good camera work. The finished product looked like it was running as good as new. I would just like to point out a few things I noticed. Pre assembly lubrication applies to all machinery. Always remember to pre-lube all gears, bearings, bushings and seals with the manufacturers recommended lube. Using gear oil in the gear case can be risky unless you make sure that you are using either G4 manual trans rated gear oil or G5 that is rated for yellow metals. This gearbox works like a differential in a car but the brass gear is a lot softer than a steel gear and can actually be damaged by using gear oil with active sulphur. Improper lube can actually eat away at the brass gear, dramatically increasing the wear rate. Some manufacturers recommend low temp grease, some 75-90W inactive sulphur gear oil and some even recommend 30W motor oil and 5W30 motor oil. It's always best to get the recommended lube for the type of gears, bushings, bearings and seals in your machine. If you can't determine the proper lube, 00 grease is the best compromise. Marine, outboard motor lower unit oil is brass friendly as well and would be the next best compromise. Judging by the pre-load on your gears, the brass gear is worn and may have to be replaced soon. Replace using the exact amount of manufacturers recommended lube. Spread some lube on the gears, bearings or bushings and seals before they are placed into the housing during assembly. Fill housing with remaining measured amount of lube either before assy. if no port(put lube in one half of housing before sliding other half down shaft and sealing) or after assy. through fill port.

Great video ... found it while searching for a understanding of my situation from a few days ago. I hit a brick hidden in the snow I thought I had gotten out of the way & it got caught under my auger blade & after it killed the auger flywheel drivebelt I was able to replace it on my own. BUT my engine & drive system runs fine on it still .. BUT as soon as I go to engage the augers it totally stops & seems something in the augers system is seized & wont allow for it to be moved at all. Im now in the process of waiting to hear back from a local shop to come look at it/do the work on it as its out of my ability to do. Again ... awesome job on the video & subbed for future references/content !! :)

Nice job. I had to see this, I have a customer who said his Auger is turning but not the impeller shaft. So I think it could be the gears inside the case. It is an old Sears Craftsman he says, very old. I guess I will find out soon though. Nice video, but I would have made a real gasket for the case when I put it together and got a good bolt to fit in the top to plug it up. I know most of them have a threaded bolt in the top filler hole. Thanks for a lot of info.

If the impeller shaft doesnt turn, it's impossible for the augers to since the augers are powered by the impeller shaft.

Nice video there! Yet you scared me when you bent down to see if the augers were running, with the lace from your hoodie dangling near the housing. It may have been further than it seemed, but I dare claim that loose strings/ belts or even long hair (not an issue for you though, lol) have actually been causes of deaths and serious injuries, and should be kept away from revolving machinery at all cost.. My dad has a Troy-Bilt snow blower. He goes through shear bolts like candy. Got him a box of 100 bolts and nuts just five years ago. Hi is down to about thirty. When you live on a farmeit, you go through lots of shear bolts. Cause of cow patties freezing and they are like bombs. The person who owner the yard-man used the wrong bolt type. Bet you it is hardened bolt. I have a yard-man machine a neighbor gave me for helping him out over the years. Mine has tracks and they are like new. Bet you that the new track material will never compare to what I have and the machine is from the late 70's or early 80's. Ten h. p. Tecumseh snow engine. Manual say the engine will surie with really low oil level. Bet you they will never write that fact about the new machines. You will lose your machine i bet. I really like mine. Would never sell or get rid of it. Good day too.

The person who owned it before me did use shear bolts, but they were for a different diameter auger shaft and the shear points were not where they were supposed to be, did not fail when they were supposed to. Not all shear bolts are created equal LOL. I just used it tonight for the first time this season, started on first pull of the rope after sitting all summer. It's a beast! Thanks for the comment and the interesting story!

@@Broncocarl92 I can tell you that just about any engine that is put away correctly will start in a pull or two. I really love the old snow machines. You can tweak the engine for more power within reason. The shear pins can be calculated at when they shear by using a formula on engineering toolbox. Do not remember the exact web--site. But keep on working and using elderly machines. Good day too.

It looked like you could have removed the auger without taking everything apart. The drive shaft just slipped away from the gear box. In my case, I just want to remove the auger assembly because an extension cord caught got between the side flange and the end of the auger shaft. It is jam so tight I can't pull it out. It actually bent the flange out. Wouldn't it be easier to open the gear box and remove the drive shaft to get just the auger out?

Only one niggle, and it’s not your fault because there is apparently documentation out there that indicates gear oil is OK. My experience working on Sears equipment which is basically the same thing as you had there is that The seals on the snowblowers gearbox are not designed to hold in oil. Reference the seal on the input shaft and look how huge that thing is compared to the shaft slopping all around there. Sears provided us techs on the road with a little cups of white lithium type grease in a paste that we would fill up the gearbox as much as we could.

@@Broncocarl92 I’m surprised, maybe you didn’t put much in. Take a mirror and the light and look for that input shaft goes in, you can see air between the shaft and the seal. At first I thought I had wrong parts but they’re all screwy like this. I guess in the environment it’s used there’s no heat developed most likely thus there’s no pressure. The seals on the output shaft are better but still appear to be mainly something that will only work for basically dust shields.
