Someone who embraces green and black can also be a powerful leader in a group. Their green aspects make them very focused on community, and their black side can push that focus to extremes. A green/black person is someone who values their friends greatly and forges strong bonds, but more in the way animals do as opposed to the rigorous structure of Orzov. However in this a black/green person often goes farther than most would. This is why green/black prefers smaller, more intimate groups. Worse still is that this green focused group becomes the new black focused self. They may do anything to protect and help their friends, even at the expense of outsiders. Need some money for food? Your black/green friend may steal it from someone else in order to give it to you, and take none of it for themselves. That's just what good friends do, right? And just as that sense of community can bring them together with friends, their black drives can push them to want to dominate that community, making them want to be the leader or head of their friends. Not because they want to rule them specifically, but because it's just what's best for everyone!

Best comparison I could say are (spoilers for Attack on Titan and Dragon Age Inquisition): Eréndira Yeager is a good example, he activated the rumbling to eradicate the rest of humanity, but his intention is so that the people of Paradis don’t ever need to be in danger of invasion (specially after a century of “his people” getting eaten by monsters created by a nation across the ocean) And Solas from DAI, he wants to return elves, his people, their immortality, after trying to free them from literally an eternity of slavery, but he’s willing to sacrifice literally the whole world to do so, to commit the greatest genocide ever. They are the kind of people that make you think “thank God they’re on our side”.
@mrmulti53262 жыл бұрын
I know that this comment is 5 years old, but i really liked this topic! What you are describing is exactly Orzhov. See, Orzhov isn't rigorous, if you want to participate of the guild, you need to know where you are going. Orzhov care about their members, they dont just use them and discard, because they need to make their members happy to use them later. The guild that is specialized in re-use things is Golgari. Because of their predatory style of leadership, they can't use reason to see things more clearly, but Orzhov is all about manipulating you doing good things to you, and if that dont work out, the things will get ugly. Golgari don't care about the well being of others, because if they die, they were weak enough to not survive. And Golgari dont have sense of structure, they care about the most pure form of strength, Orzhov care about every type of power, including social. So, the Golgari can't be good leaders by themselves, because a Golgari character don't need others to accomplish its goals, but the Orzhov needs and likes it! For example, the embodiment of Golgari is Venom from the comics, because he is vicious but flexible. He is very centered, but he is a brute force. He uses cunning (black) to plan the best way to use he's superior strength (green). A Orzhov character, just for comparison, is Magneto. He cares about mutants, but despise those that aren't mutants. He uses the social (white) to get more power (black)

Your analysis of this color combination is spot on. I am relatively new to the game and built a Green/Black deck because I was interested in abusing mana ramping mechanics and GY floating. After some play testing and some tweaking I finally found the balance within my deck that provides sufficient mana to cast spells such as murder, and drop chupacabras on the opposing player, while abusing GY floats to throw either sacraficed or dead chupacabras back into battle. After watching this video I actually understand why the deck works so well even though I have little exposure to the game. I can see the lore in my deck and now think of my deck as a forest of decay full of cemeteries and foul orchards under the constant watchful eye of Liliana the Necromancer. She guards herself with Chupacabras while committing heinous acts of murder against anyone who would challenge her presence or power within the forest. She conducts a Macabre Waltz and other Necromancer spells to manipulate life and death. Marwyn the Nurturer has joined her in her forest of decay as a General with a small contingency of elves that worship her and her ability to manipulate death. They provide her support and the resources necessary to retain her power and are willing to throw themselves at the enemy if needed to ensure her survival. When all else fails, Liliana is willing to sacrifice herself to resurrect her chupacabras or any other creature that will ensure her victory. I thoroughly enjoyed the video and will continue to watch the rest of the series that you have completed. I now have a better understanding of my deck and it's mechanics and why it works the way that it does. Thank you for the great content. Liliana sends her love.... -PTM6 Fish Tank

The other things I think about Golgari is the idea of the unseelie fae from earth mythology. Unseelie fae are ugly, twisted, frightening, dark. But they are not necessarily 'evil'. They are powerful and connected to nature. I really want to make a black/green unseelie deck someday :)

To me, it feels like Golgari is the fundamental examination of the "flip" of the life and death cycle. It's hard to have a cycle if it doesn't go the whole circle, and that's golgari's job. Carrying the Death Part, back through to Life. Golgari to me represents decomposition, and making sure that even in death, things have a role, and can keep the ball rolling

One thing I miss from the original Ravnica lore was the Golgari's place in Ravnica, they ruled the undercity through charity: their rot farms grew mushrooms and other fungi to feed the poor and downtrodden and kept the sewers safe (while keeping themselves as the apex predators there). Also something that isn't mentioned enough is how Jarad became the Lich-Lord: when he was killed trying to protect his son he forced his own soul back into his mangled body to continue the fight along side Argus Kos. Philosophically speaking, at 4:15 (or so, scrolling back after the end) it feels like black is giving up it's "absolute primacy" -- the pure unbridled ambition to never acnkolwedge a force stronger and submits to "nature" as a source for ever greater power. Black's position to green is the "worm in the apple," consuming natures strengths (but submitting as well) to gain ever greater *personal* and *local* power. Just clicking through all the cards you showed in black/green, (5:20 onwards), they feel impatient. Green has succumbed to temptation and allowed its natural pace to be corrupted by black. Black has surrendered to the greater, but unpresent power that is nature and has grown ever stronger *in the present*. I absolutely agree with you that these are ontologically neutral compromises. Powerful, uncaring, but neutral. The dead and nature have no care to what use they are put, merely that they are put to use. Excellent, excellent series.

I disagree. Green and Black are united not by "death is relevant" but by utilitarianism. Both colors believe in using every bit of something. For Green that manifests as the circle of life, and for black that manifests as resurrecting the dude who insulted your hair to serve you drinks from a mug made of their own skull. Golgari therefore is less the guild of death and more that of utilitarianism. This of course leads to dealing with death but from a perspective of recycling rather than one of "uh well both of these colors are chill with graveyards so we made Golgari the graveyard guild.
@ninjabreadman226 жыл бұрын
You just said the same thing from a different perspective. Utilitarianism by definition makes use of death and is often defined by the lengths it will go to to utilize death. Death is a constant on Ravnica, and how you approach it and deal with it will define who you truly align with. Green and black both share a common, utilitarian philosophy on death. "Death is relevant/useful, it cannot be overlooked" Green because the dead are perfectly good food to return to the cycle, black because the dead are perfectly good bodies to exploit.

I wanted to comment about the section: peaceful within, uneasy and driven to convert without: I am not sure if that's exactly the philosophy of green (at least in terms of being driven to convert) The way I see It, it is more a natural inclination to grow as large and strong as possible, not necessarily to convert but to display its strength via its size as a celebration of Harmony(inner peace / cooperation) and life(strength). Pretty much it isn't that green is uneasy, its more that Green by instinct must grow to sustain life. I am loving this series! it is my favorite you've done since the lore videos! Interesting video, and explanation, though I thought bits of it were repetitive (e.g. 'Green and Black couldn't be more different'), I also felt that it portrayed Green as a submissive part of the Green Black relationship, as though it had been corrupt by Black, and it merely had to get used to the limits of Green... I wonder if that power dynamic might have come across differently if you began by talking about Green instead. I agree full heartedly that Golgari isn't inherently evil, but I don't think you really explain why so... but still Great video! When is worst cards ever coming back :P
@TheManaSource8 жыл бұрын
Golgari isn't inherently evil because the idea and even act of manipulating death isn't evil outright. That can be seen from a lot of different directions and calling that evil would be supremely subjective. As far as green being the submissive color in the color pair, it kind of is. I anchored black first for a reason. Black is willing to do ANYTHING to get what it wants. Anything at all. Green was already content where it was for the most part.
@nathan1x8 жыл бұрын
That's a really interesting take! Thanks for the reply!
@sancturillore8 жыл бұрын
Also, about the two legendary creatures he showed at the end when he said that Golgari isn't inherently evil play along in the lore with what he said. If I remember correctly, those two are twins. The sister, Savra, is morally evil, yet beautiful, while the brother, Jarad, is morally good, yet ugly. He didn't turn into a lich for simple selfishness either. He sacrifices his life to save his son and to contribute to the safety of the world of Ravnica, then he came back as a lich to lead the Golgari without letting go out of control and to stop it from being used by people like Savra(the leader before him) for their own personal ambitions. As such, in the inner conflict of ambition and harmony, Savra and Jarad have both, but are closer to one over the other. The role of the Golgari is to maintain the natural order of the cycle of life and death, meaning both to stop it from being too excessive and stop it from being too little. Basically, in a world that happens to pretty much being a singe world-wide city, the Golgari's role is to take care of the undercity, of the corpse that keep on accumulating from all mortal forms of life on the plane, and they have been doing so for over 10,000 years. One last thing, a quote from the flavor text of the Golgari Signet: "Depending on your point of view, the seal represents a proud guardian of the natural cycle or one who has sold her soul to darkness for eternal life." I personally believe that this is referring to Jarad and Savra. But at the same time, it also represents the entirety of the Golgari Guild members, who can be perceived as one or the other, as well as being both in some cases. Technically speaking, by reviving himself into a Lich, Jarad DID kind of sell his soul to darkness for eternal life while also doing so for the purpose of continuing to guard the natural cycle.
@sancturillore8 жыл бұрын
What's more, technically speaking, the Golgari are pragmatic. They don't let anything go to waste, they recycle and re-use anything that can be, even if that is flesh. Hence the Scavenge mechanic.^^

DarthElmo While you are too busy making law I am here enforcing them. At least do something. I had to burn a couple of goblins for burning houses and cut a couple of hands for illegal use of armaments. Meanwhile you were to busy deciding what a Weird was. Just stop it, make them illegal and smash them.

i agree completely with your assessment, and you are correct about people assuming black is always negative. you have done a great job in both explaining the color pie and the guilds thus far. i can only hope you continue this great work, and that you eventually break down the tri-color groups as well. kudos

I loved the episode. I would like to see the Orzhov one. Your take on the Golgari was interesting. I would add an emphasis on the patience it seems to lend black which is by its nature impatient whereas Golgari mechanics seem to require structure before anything can be done.

Jackson Bowns What are you talking about? Who doesn't love peace and security through any means necessary? Want peace? punch all those who oppose it. What security? Threaten those who threaten it. What to stop terrorism? Just scare the terrorists! Boros the color of vigilantism. To bad people never get creative on that side. Like Batman has boros in him, with blue, so jeskai?

Interesting take on B/G Wedge, I really enjoy this new series! I was struggling to think of things green and black had in common and could only really think of one. Their unrelenting inevitability. Death eventually occurs which black understands and it is what drives it to be ambitious to achieve its goals before that occurs (and sometimes even death does not stop it). Green like you mentioned is kind of fanatical and possesses a tenacity similar to blacks ambition to set an ideal order it envisions. Both see death as an ultimate end that cuts short their ambitions and thus both manipulate it or work hard to overcome it.

Maybe mix a little frog in there. You know, frogs are good at fogging the board. Maybe a zombie frog so it doea not die. Make it slimy so it is hard to hit, capture and kill. I do not see the need for elf, fogs do not need to know, they just need to be triggered. Who wants pointy a pointy eared frog? Actually that is pretty cool, let's add the elf for that. Pointy cool ears on the frog. Maybe some horns? Something so it can regenerate the fog it makes, dry ice? any suggestions?

Great video!! I really enjoy you series on color philosophy, very insightful. I particularly love Golgari, my main commander is Savra which I think has the best description of the Golgari in her flavor text. I think Golgari represents the best two-of combination of colors in Mtg, so extremely opposed and yet closest to each other than to any other color, as you brilliantly explain.

When I first started playing Magic, I quickly found myself to be a Gruul mage. Over time I grew accustomed to the idea of taking advantage of cards already in my graveyard (Scavenging Ooze, Whip of Erebos, Deathrite, etc.). I think overall, I've become a Jund mage, but I'm starting to favor the Golgari side more than the Gruul. Your explanation of how black adds to the life cycle that Green accepts basically pinpointed what got me interested in the color combination.

have you thought about doing the 3 colored combinations as well? watching this i was wondering how abzan reflects some of the golgari philosophy?
@ODDnanref8 жыл бұрын
Brian Wise It does, it has the life relationship. It was about a community that strove for power through community and the accumulated traditions and knowledge of their ancestors. Black and green made the commuting with the dead easier, both as means of revenge and as means of guidance and protection. The white and green brought the community, the connectedness to each other both those alive and those dead. The white and black combination brought the religiousness of the clan, and their cult for the dead, as well as their internal struggle to gain power.

ODDnanref i know, but its that thought process where your sitting their listening to these discussions about each ravnica guild and see how these same interest appear on other planes within the game of magic.

Great video. Golgari is such a misunderstood colour combo (to be honest anything with black in it is), I'm glad you are shedding some insight into their philosophy. If I could make a suggestion, I would like you to do your next video on Orzhov? Examining how enemy colours synergize together is very interesting.
